Reports about a possible remake are secondary reporting, not a Square Enix announcement. Nintendo Life’s August 11, 2026 coverage attributes claims about a past remake project and its status to RPG Site editor Alex Donaldson. That is a reported account, and should not be presented as confirmation from Square Enix. Nintendo Life’s report provides that attribution.
Is the FF9 remake coming out in 2028?
There is no confirmed 2028 release window for a remake game in the official sources reviewed. The reported 2028 target concerns an animated series, not a game. Time Extension reported in March 2026 that Euro Visual’s website listed a Final Fantasy IX animated series as in production, and said the 2028 target came from a separate industry report. Is the 2028 date for the FF9 anime or a game?
It is associated in reporting with the animated adaptation. That is separate from the unconfirmed remake rumor, and the date is not an officially announced release date. A report of a series in production and a reported target year do not establish a remake game, its development status, platforms, or launch schedule.
What has Square Enix officially documented about Final Fantasy IX?
Square Enix records the original game’s release as July 7, 2000, and marked its 25th anniversary in 2025. Possibly, but the official remake page sometimes encountered in searches is specifically about Final Fantasy VII, not Final Fantasy IX. Square Enix describes that page as the first standalone game in the Final Fantasy VII remake project. It is not evidence of a ninth-game remake. Square Enix’s page is explicitly for Final Fantasy VII Remake.
