Did the Ryzen 7 9700X Get a 120W Power Bump to Challenge the 7800X3D?

The Ryzen 7 9700X’s rumored 120W bump never became its official default. AMD lists 65W, while reported tests found no meaningful FPS gain from 105W or custom 120W settings in three games.

No. AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X launched with a 65W default TDP, and AMD’s product page still lists 65W. A reported pre-launch rumor that AMD might raise it to 120W was never reflected in the official specification. A later 105W option—and a custom 120W test setting—were separate developments, and reported tests found virtually no gaming-FPS change across those settings in three games.

What was the rumored 120W change?

On June 27, 2024, PC Gamer reported a WCCFTech-sourced rumor that AMD was considering changing the 9700X from a 65W to a 120W specification shortly before launch. HotHardware also described the proposed change as unofficial chatter. Neither report established that AMD had announced a 120W default.

AMD’s June 2, 2024 launch announcement listed the Ryzen 7 9700X at 65W TDP, and AMD’s product page continues to show 65W as its default TDP. The 120W figure in the rumor should not be treated as the released chip’s official default. PC Gamer’s rumor report and AMD’s current specifications distinguish the rumor from the published product specification.

What are the 9700X’s official specifications?

AMD lists the 9700X as an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 processor for the AM5 socket, with a 3.8 GHz base clock, boost clock up to 5.5 GHz, 32 MB of L3 cache, and 65W default TDP. AMD’s launch announcement described 40 MB of total cache. The cache figures refer to different measures: 32 MB is the listed L3 cache, while 40 MB is the launch release’s total-cache figure.

  • 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
  • 5.5 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 40 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support

The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. AMD recommends a premium air cooler for optimal performance. AMD lists support for A620, X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840, and B850 chipsets. Check your motherboard’s CPU support information and firmware requirements before building or upgrading.

Does the 105W mode or 120W setting improve gaming FPS?

Not materially in the three games covered by the reported test. On September 3, 2024, Tom’s Hardware summarized testing by Japanese outlet ASCII, which compared the 9700X at 65W, a 105W setting, and a custom 120W setting in Black Myth: Wukong, Counter-Strike 2, and F1 24. The report characterized the frame-rate differences as virtually zero or within the margin of error. It does not establish that higher-power settings have no effect in every game, resolution, or system configuration.

The 105W option was reported as available through MSI BIOS at that time, with AMD planning an AGESA update to extend the option. That is historical availability context, not a current inventory of which boards or firmware versions offer the setting. The custom 120W test configuration likewise does not mean AMD changed the chip’s official default to 120W. Tom’s Hardware’s report on ASCII’s tests describes the specific games and settings.

Does the 9700X compete with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in games?

Power rating alone cannot answer that. The 9700X and 7800X3D have different cache configurations and architectural generations; the 9700X’s listed 32 MB of L3 cache is not enough to infer game-by-game results. The cited evidence does not provide a matched independent benchmark table or current prices, so it cannot establish a universal winner across games and budgets.

HotHardware attributed this statement to Donny Woligroski, AMD Senior Technical Marketing Manager of Consumer Processors, in a statement to Tom’s Hardware: “Is it the fastest in gaming? It’s faster than the competition in our tests. X3D is still the king of the hill, but by a much smaller margin than typically between X3D and non-X3D. So a 7800X3D would, yes, be faster than 9700X, but maybe not by as much as you would expect,” Woligrowski stated. That is an AMD representative’s characterization, not an independent benchmark conclusion. HotHardware’s report gives the attribution.

What should a buyer compare?

For a gaming build, compare independent results for the games and resolution you care about, alongside the full cost and requirements of each platform. A higher TDP number by itself does not demonstrate higher frame rates, and the three-game report does not substitute for a broader matched review.
