The claim that the Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties demo became the first Yakuza release to receive Steam’s “Mostly Negative” label is not independently verified by the available records. A January 2026 Reddit post repeats the claim, but no dated Steam demo-page snapshot or review count substantiates it. The developer did acknowledge visual and technical problems in the demo; that is a separate, documented issue.
What can be verified about the Steam rating?
The “first Yakuza release in history” claim requires two things: a reliable historical record of the demo’s Steam review label and a comparison against prior Yakuza releases. Neither is established by the available sources. The January 2026 Reddit discussion repeats the “Mostly Negative” description, but it is not an archived Steam rating or proof of the series-wide comparison.
The Steam result available for reference is for the full game and does not preserve a dated demo-rating snapshot. Without that snapshot, the demo’s exact label and review count cannot be confirmed. The claim should therefore be treated as reported community discussion, not established Steam history.
Why the demo’s rating should not be confused with the full game’s
The demo and the released game are distinct review contexts. PC Gamer reported on February 16, 2026 that the full game had 63% positive Steam user reviews and was labeled “Mixed” at that time. That dated figure describes the full game, not the demo, and does not establish either the demo’s historical label or the game’s current rating. PC Gamer’s report also explicitly distinguished “Mixed” from “Overwhelmingly Negative.”

What Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio acknowledged about the demo
In a notice dated January 30, 2026, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio said the demo was made during development and that some of its presentation fell short of the final product. The studio noted that unresolved issues had left unintended expressions in the demo, and specifically identified visual presentation and lighting around Kubochi River in Downtown Ryukyu as a bug. The notice confirms that visual and technical complaints were being addressed; it does not confirm a Steam review label or number of reviews.
The studio stated: “Please note that this demo was created during the development phase of the full product.” It said fixes and quality improvements were planned for Patch 1.11 on the full game’s release date, adding: “In the full version, this issue will be addressed through bug fixes and quality enhancements, scheduled for implementation in Patch 1.11, which will be distributed on the release date.” The notice cautioned that patch timing could vary by platform. Which game and demo are being discussed?
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties launched on February 12, 2026, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. SEGA describes the package as Yakuza Kiwami 3, a remake of 2009’s Yakuza 3, alongside Dark Ties, a new story centered on Yoshitaka Mine.
SEGA described the free demo as available on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. It samples both games, with Okinawa and Tokyo settings, combat, minigames, and substories; demo save data does not transfer to the full game.
