ModRetro, the company behind the Chromatic handheld, is reportedly seeking a major new investment—but the available report does not confirm that investor talks are underway, identify committed investors, or establish that a deal has closed. Eneba Hub reported in an article published March 9, 2026, and updated June 16, 2026, that Palmer Luckey was seeking about $1 billion for ModRetro and suggested existing Anduril investors Lux Capital and Founders Fund could participate. That is secondary reporting, not confirmation from ModRetro or either investor.
What is reported about ModRetro’s fundraising?
The clearest financing detail identified is Eneba Hub’s report that Luckey was seeking roughly $1 billion for ModRetro. Its article also discusses the possibility that Lux Capital and Founders Fund—investors in Anduril, the defense contractor associated with Luckey—could invest in ModRetro. These are reported fundraising plans and possible participation, not evidence that either firm is negotiating, has committed money, or has completed an investment. Read Eneba Hub’s report.
No primary statement from ModRetro or a named investor confirming the specific claim that talks with potential new investors are underway was identified. The participants, stage, and terms of any such talks therefore remain unverified.
Who and what is ModRetro?
ModRetro is associated with Palmer Luckey, who is also associated with Anduril. The company’s best-known product in the coverage is the Chromatic, a handheld designed to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. That product context explains the “Game Boy company” shorthand; it does not corroborate the financing report.

The headline’s phrase “arms dealer” is a characterization, not a neutral description of ModRetro. For context, Anduril is a defense contractor; the funding claim concerns ModRetro. Readers may weigh Luckey’s association with both companies as they choose, but it should not be mistaken for evidence about who is investing.
What this means for people considering a retro handheld
The financing story is separate from the buying decision. The Chromatic is one option for playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges; Time Extension also names the Analogue Pocket as an alternative. The available reporting does not establish current prices, stock, or a current specification comparison, so check the manufacturers’ latest product information before choosing between them. Time Extension’s ModRetro feature discusses the company and its game-publishing context, not investor talks.
