No. The claim that Ubisoft might end XDefiant after Season 4 was a conditional rumor in October 2024, and executive producer Mark Rubin rejected it at the time. Ubisoft later made a separate decision: on December 3, 2024, it announced that development would end, Season 3 would be the final season, and the servers would close on June 3, 2025. That announced server end date has passed.
What the Season 4 rumor said
In October 2024, leaker Shaun Weber said support for XDefiant could end after Season 4 if the game’s player numbers did not improve. The claim was conditional, not an announcement from Ubisoft. Executive producer Mark Rubin rejected the rumor and said the team was planning Year 2 content. GameSpot’s contemporaneous report covered the claim and Rubin’s response.
What Ubisoft later announced
On December 3, 2024, Ubisoft announced that it would discontinue development of XDefiant. The company said Season 3 would still launch and that servers would remain online until June 3, 2025. Ubisoft also ended new downloads, player registrations, and purchases on December 3, 2024. The server shutdown date has passed, so the game is no longer playable through its official servers. Ubisoft’s announcement set out the service changes; a December 4 corporate release confirmed the decision.
Why the two statements are not a contradiction
| Point | October 2024 | December 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker | Executive producer Mark Rubin responding to a rumor | Ubisoft announcing a corporate decision |
| Certainty | A conditional possibility tied to player growth | A definitive discontinuation announcement |
| Season and service plan | Rubin said Year 2 content was being planned | Season 3 was to be the final season; servers were scheduled to close June 3, 2025 |
Rubin’s comments described the company’s plans at that time; they were not a guarantee that the game would remain online indefinitely. Ubisoft’s later decision superseded those plans. It did not confirm the rumor’s specific Season 4 timeline: the company said Season 3 would be the final season.

Why Ubisoft discontinued the game
Ubisoft said it had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete in the demanding free-to-play FPS market, and that the game was too far from the results needed to justify additional significant investment. The company framed the decision as the result of reviewing performance, profitability, and market conditions. These are Ubisoft’s stated reasons, not a published player-count analysis. Its January 9, 2025 strategic update later confirmed that XDefiant had been discontinued in December 2024.
