Founder Richard Leadbetter bought an additional 25% of the company, while Eurogamer co-founder Rupert Loman bought the other 25% previously held by IGN. Leadbetter already owned 50%, making him the controlling individual owner.
The move gave Digital Foundry more control over hiring, investment, sponsorships, publishing, and editorial direction. It also transferred more financial and operational risk to a small specialist team that still depends heavily on YouTube, Patreon, advertisers, sponsors, and access from game and hardware companies.

What “going independent” actually means
Digital Foundry is no longer an IGN-controlled property or a Eurogamer sub-brand. The ownership transition was completed on August 7, 2025, rather than being a plan to seek independence at some later date.

It does not mean Digital Foundry stopped using YouTube, Patreon, sponsors, advertising, or publisher and hardware-company relationships. Digital Foundry remains known for technical analysis of resolution, frame rate, image quality, graphics settings, console hardware, PC performance, and older games. “Most trusted” is best understood as a description of its reputation among its audience, not an independently measured industry ranking.
The ownership timeline
- Before 2015: Richard Leadbetter founded Digital Foundry and developed its specialist technical-analysis identity.
- 2015: Leadbetter sold half of the business to Eurogamer, helping fund expansion—particularly the outlet’s video operation—while retaining 50%.
- Afterward: The corporate half moved through Eurogamer’s parent Gamer Network and then ReedPop.
- Later: Ziff Davis acquired Gamer Network, bringing Digital Foundry into the ownership structure that included IGN.
- August 7, 2025: IGN sold its 50% stake. Leadbetter acquired 25% and Rupert Loman acquired the remaining 25%.
The exact purchase price was not disclosed. Leadbetter told The Verge that the acquisition was likely the largest purchase he had made and cost more than his house.
Why did Digital Foundry leave IGN?
Leadbetter’s stated reason was control, not a publicly documented dispute with a particular IGN executive or policy. Under the previous joint-ownership arrangement, major investments and strategic decisions required agreement between owners with different priorities.
Recommended Free Tools
Leadbetter said corporate ownership could make experimentation subordinate to short-term financial metrics. Independence was intended to give the team more freedom over:
- Hiring and staffing;
- Technical equipment and other investments;
- Sponsorships and advertising;
- Merchandise and potential new products;
- Editorial priorities and publishing strategy.
The Verge mentioned layoffs at Ziff Davis and IGN around the same period, but the available reporting does not establish that those layoffs caused the sale. It would be inaccurate to present that connection as fact.
Why could a five-person team attempt this?
Digital Foundry did not have to build an audience from nothing. At the time of the announcement, the team had five people, nearly 1.5 million YouTube subscribers, an established Patreon audience, and a business Leadbetter described as profitable.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The Verge also reported a publicly estimated Patreon revenue figure of roughly $200,000 per year. That number was an estimate, not an audited disclosure of Digital Foundry’s total revenue. It should not be treated as the company’s complete income or as proof of long-term financial security.
How the independent business is funded
Digital Foundry’s model combines broad free distribution with direct audience support and other potential income sources:
- Patreon: Recurring supporter memberships help fund contributors, production, technical analysis, and expanded coverage.
- YouTube: Advertising and audience reach remain central to the video operation.
- Sponsorships and advertising: These can help pay for specialist staff, equipment, and production.
- Merchandise and website revenue: These were identified as possible areas for development rather than guaranteed income.
Digital Foundry’s Patreon page specifically describes support as a way to reduce dependence on YouTube’s algorithm. That is an important distinction: independence from IGN is not independence from platforms.
What Patreon supporters currently receive
As observed on August 18, 2026, the Patreon page listed three paid levels. Prices and benefits can change.
| Tier | Listed benefits |
|---|---|
| $5 per month | Higher-quality encodes, Discord access, weekly production updates, early access to DF Direct Weekly, the ability to submit questions, and an ad-free experience at digitalfoundry.net. |
| $10 per month | Everything in the standard tier, plus “Tomorrow’s Videos Today” early access for completed, non-embargoed material and occasional bonus content. |
| $15 per month | Benefits connected with expanded DF Retro output and early access to the DF Retro Super Show. |
Supporters are paying to help sustain the outlet and receive listed membership benefits. A subscription does not guarantee particular coverage, editorial access, or influence over decisions.

What was supposed to change editorially?
The launch plan emphasized continuity rather than a complete editorial reset. Digital Foundry intended to keep its three broad coverage pillars:
Rank #3
- Kids Friendly Design: This P30S handheld game console is specially designed for kids. It has a stylish arcade - like appearance. The body fits a child's hand, and the game settings also cater to kids psychology, thus being very attractive.
- Excellent Gaming Experience: Equipped with a 3.0 - inch high - definition screen and excellent speaker sound, it provides an excellent visual and auditory experience for video games. This handheld game console is small and lightweight, convenient for kids to use and carry. Its ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip, allowing children to fully enjoy the games.
- Rich Collection of Classic Games: This retro handheld game console contains 220 interesting kids video games, including various types such as entertainment, sports, and adventure games, just like those found in many retro game consoles. While playing these games, kids can cultivate skills such as hand - eye coordination, thinking, and problem - solving.
- Convenient Rechargeable and Long - lasting Battery: The video game console is equipped with an 860mAh lithium - ion battery. It ensures that kids can play games without interruption, because there is no need for frequent battery replacement, which is very suitable for playing portable games outdoors. It is a great addition to the world of handheld games for children and can bring more fun to them.
- Absolutely Surprising Gift: Our handheld game toy is a surprising gift for kids, teenagers, and even adults. It is the best gift for birthdays, Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. Our customer support team will serve you wholeheartedly.

- Retro gaming.
Leadbetter also outlined ambitions for a more substantial public website, better access to nearly two decades of archived material, more developer interviews, a retro-gaming podcast, and potentially an additional editor to strengthen PC coverage.
Most content was expected to remain free, and the team intended to maintain its existing video cadence without a major interruption. These were launch-era objectives, not proof that every proposed project was completed.
What happened to the archive?
The Verge reported that Digital Foundry acquired its publication and archive rights as part of the transaction. At launch, digitalfoundry.net was described primarily as a portal directing visitors to videos rather than a fully developed editorial archive.
Turning that material into a searchable public resource was an announced goal. Archive ownership and a plan to improve access are not the same as confirmation that a complete archive-based website has been delivered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.The trade-off: autonomy versus scale
Independence can remove corporate approval layers and let the team prioritize specialist work that may not attract mass-market traffic. It can also make investment in capture equipment, hiring, retro coverage, interviews, and written publishing easier to pursue on its own terms.
But a large parent company can provide legal, technical, administrative, sales, marketing, and production support. A five-person independent team must either absorb those responsibilities or pay for them. That creates several risks:
Rank #4
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
- Staffing limits: A small team may have less capacity for simultaneous console, PC, retro, written, and interview coverage.
- Patreon volatility: Subscriber churn, household budgets, platform fees, and audience dissatisfaction can affect recurring income.
- YouTube dependence: Algorithm changes can affect discovery and revenue even when the company is no longer owned by IGN.
- Sponsorship pressure: Technical outlets often cover the same hardware and publishers that may provide advertising, sponsorship, review access, or information.
- Reduced infrastructure: Independence may mean less access to corporate legal, technical, and operational resources.
These issues do not show that Digital Foundry’s coverage is compromised. They show why ownership independence is not identical to editorial independence. Readers should still look for clear disclosures and a credible separation between commercial relationships and conclusions.
One-year reality check
As of August 18, 2026, Digital Foundry was still operating through its website, YouTube presence, and supporter program. Its active Patreon page continued to promote paid support, early access, community features, and expanded work.
That confirms that the independent operation continued beyond its launch. It does not, on the evidence available here, independently confirm that every 2025 ambition—such as a larger archive website, a retro podcast, or additional hiring—was completed. Those plans should remain described as goals unless Digital Foundry has since documented their delivery through first-party channels.
The official YouTube channel remains the main free distribution route. Viewers who do not want a recurring membership can continue to watch the public videos without paying.
So, will coverage change?
The stated intention was to preserve Digital Foundry’s core technical-analysis identity while creating room for more written, retro, developer, and PC-focused work. Whether that produces better coverage depends on execution, staffing, finances, disclosure practices, and access—not simply on the ownership structure.

The most accurate expectation is continuity with greater managerial freedom. Digital Foundry may be able to make faster or more specialized decisions, but it also has fewer corporate resources and must persuade enough viewers to support the operation financially.
