Digital Xbox games are tied to both a Microsoft account and one designated Home Xbox; disc games ordinarily require the physical disc in a console with an optical drive. Digital access makes switching games and playing on a Series S straightforward, while a disc can be lent or resold as physical media. Neither format guarantees that every game or mode works offline, and a digital license is not the same as unrestricted ownership.
How digital and disc licenses work
For Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, Microsoft documents two licenses: a user license associated with the Microsoft account that bought the game, and a device license attached to the account’s designated Home Xbox. The user license supports access when the purchaser signs in on another console; the device license lets other people use the game on the Home console. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules describe these licenses and their limits.

A disc game uses the physical disc as the ordinary play entitlement. Installing the game copies data to the console, but does not normally replace the disc as the check that permits play. That makes a disc transferable physical media, not a promise that every bonus, add-on, online service, or feature will transfer or remain available.
Sharing Xbox games: Home Xbox versus a disc
Digital games and Home Xbox sharing
Anyone signed in on the purchaser’s Home Xbox can use games licensed to that console without the purchaser staying signed in. On another console, the purchaser generally needs to be signed in and connected for the roaming user license. Microsoft’s developer guidance explains this distinction in Xbox console licensing documentation.

- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes

- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
Microsoft’s rules allow access or installation across a reasonable number of consoles, including the Home console and consoles the account holder signs into, but a game can be played on only one console at a time under the stated rules. Play on a roaming console can coexist with play on the Home Xbox if a different user is signed in on the Home console. The Home Xbox can be changed up to five times in a rolling one-year period, counted from the first assignment or change in that period; changing it moves the device licenses to the newly designated console.
Disc sharing
A physical copy can be handed to another person, who needs both the disc and a compatible console with an optical drive to play it. The same copy cannot serve as a general license for simultaneous play by multiple people; whoever is playing needs access to the disc. Online services or title-specific requirements may still apply.

Add-ons and in-game purchases
Do not assume that sharing a base game shares everything attached to it. Microsoft notes that some add-ons or downloadable content may be limited to personal use, and its developer guidance says consumable add-ons are account-specific and not shared.

Can you play digital Xbox games offline?
The designated Home Xbox is the principal place for offline access to digital games. Microsoft’s licensing guide gives the example of a player running a game on the Home console while offline, while signing in online to play from a friend’s console. See Microsoft’s offline licensing guidance.

- Standard Edition for Xbox Series X (disc) includes the full EA Sports UFC 6 game. Not compatible with Xbox One.
- Powered by fighters: advanced striking and motion systems bring UFC stars to life with more realistic movement, impact, and responsiveness in every exchange.
- Step into the Octagon: refined gameplay delivers tighter controls, fluid animations, and authentic MMA action.
- Fight your story: new immersive modes add narrative depth, making every bout feel personal and driven by your choices.
That license behavior is not a guarantee that every title launches offline or that every mode works without a connection. A game may have its own online requirement or depend on online services. If you expect to play without internet access, make the console you rely on your Home Xbox and install and prepare the game while connected. Microsoft does not provide a title-by-title offline compatibility list in the cited licensing guidance.
Do you need the disc after installing an Xbox game?
For ordinary disc play, yes. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X backward-compatibility FAQ says a disc-based Xbox One game downloads to the console after insertion and that the disc must remain in the drive to play after installation. The disc is therefore more than an installation medium.

- Standard Edition for Xbox Series X (disc) includes the full EA SPORTS Madden NFL 27 game. Not compatible with Xbox One. Enjoy Franchise mode, Superstar Career, and Ultimate Team.

- BUILD YOUR LEGACY – Progress through the Superstar G.O.A.T. Career Journey and customize your roster with Ultimate Team Captains.
Disc-based licensing may avoid relying on the purchaser’s account license, but it does not make every title fully playable offline: the game can still require a connection for particular modes or services.

Can an Xbox disc be converted to a digital license?
Microsoft announced a disc-to-digital feature on Xbox Wire on August 26, 2026, with Insider testing scheduled to begin August 31. The announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games support the feature, but that is not a guarantee that a particular disc qualifies. A supported disc must be inserted in a supported Xbox One or Series X console and the game launched to claim the entitlement. Xbox Wire’s announcement says Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming benefits apply where supported.
Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules make clear that this is a limited license, not a way to separate the digital entitlement from the game disc. You must continue to possess the qualifying disc; Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it, and does not allow the license to be transferred separately. Not all discs qualify, and eligibility can change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. Xbox’s disc-to-digital FAQ says an eligible-disc prompt on the console is the way to check support; Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs are not supported by this feature. The FAQ limits availability to supported disc-drive consoles, eligible Xbox One or Series X discs, and select markets, with one revokable digital license per game disc.
Which format makes more sense?
| What matters to you | Digital games | Disc games |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing at home | Home Xbox device licenses let other signed-in users play eligible content on that console. | Pass the physical copy to someone with a compatible disc-drive console; the disc is needed to play. |
| Playing on a digital-only console | Suitable for Series S and all-digital Series X configurations, subject to game compatibility. | Not usable without an optical drive, except where a qualifying disc has received the limited disc-to-digital license. |
| Offline access | Best supported on the Home Xbox, but game-specific online requirements can still apply. | The disc supplies the ordinary play entitlement, but game-specific online requirements can still apply. |
| Keeping or transferring the copy | Access is governed by Microsoft’s account and device license rules; do not treat it as an unrestricted transferable copy. | Physical media can be retained or transferred, subject to title terms and the recipient having compatible hardware. |
| Switching games | No disc swap is needed. | Insert the disc for the game you want to play. |
Choose digital if convenient switching, account access, and compatibility with a digital-only console matter most. Choose discs if retaining or passing on physical media matters more and you have an optical-drive console. Neither choice removes title-specific compatibility, licensing, or online-service limits.
