You can claim a digital license from some Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs: insert an eligible disc into a supported disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. The disc does not become irrelevant—the license remains tied to continued possession of the qualifying disc, and not every title is eligible. Microsoft’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes the claim, while its Digital Goods Usage Rules set out the conditions.
How to claim a digital license from an Xbox game disc
- Use a disc-drive console. You need a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and a supported Xbox One or Series X game disc. Sign in to the account on which you want the entitlement. Microsoft’s announcement specifies the console and disc, but does not document a separate account-switching or offline claim procedure.
- Insert the disc and launch the game. Microsoft describes this as the claim action. If the disc and title are eligible, the digital entitlement can be claimed or received.
- Check the title on your console. Eligibility is title-specific. If the game does not offer the entitlement, it may not be eligible or available to you. Microsoft says eligibility can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, and other factors, and it may add or remove discs.
- Keep the qualifying disc. The digital license is conditioned on continued possession of the disc. Microsoft may require revalidation and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it.
These steps reflect Xbox’s feature announcement and the conditions in Microsoft’s Usage Rules.

What the digital license does—and does not do
Disc-to-Digital gives an eligible physical game a digital entitlement; it is not a way to detach the game from the disc altogether. Microsoft’s rules say the license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc and cannot be transferred separately from it. If you sell or give away that disc, you should not assume that the digital entitlement will remain usable.

The announcement does not promise that every game will gain cloud-play or Xbox Play Anywhere benefits: those apply only where supported.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
Can you do this on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot read a physical game disc or perform the disc-based claim itself. The claim instructions specify a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and qualifying disc. The available official information does not establish whether an entitlement claimed on another console can then be used to play that game on a Series S, so do not assume it will work without checking the title’s availability and terms.

Which discs are eligible, and is the feature available to everyone?
Microsoft says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature and that it is starting with thousands of titles. Those descriptions are not a guarantee for a particular disc, and Microsoft’s rules explicitly say that not all discs are eligible. The official material cited here does not provide a complete, live eligibility list; check the individual disc on your console.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement framed the feature as an Xbox Insider test beginning August 31. A September 30, 2026 Windows Central report said it became available to all players on Xbox Series X|S on September 29. That secondary report does not establish universal regional rollout, and Microsoft’s rules say availability can vary. If the feature does not appear for your disc, availability or eligibility may be the reason.

Buying a separate digital license
If your disc is not eligible—or you want a license that does not depend on keeping that disc—check the game’s digital listing and the terms for your account and region. Whether you need to buy a separate digital license depends on the individual title and what entitlements you already have; the disc-to-digital rules do not establish that a purchase is always necessary.
Why older Xbox disc advice may differ
Older forum answers may refer to different policies. Xbox’s June 2013 licensing post was partly superseded by a June 19 update and is not authority for the current Disc-to-Digital process. For current eligibility and license conditions, use Microsoft’s present Usage Rules and the claim option shown for the disc on your console.
