Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 10 already includes DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12. Microsoft updates those core components through Windows Update and does not provide a separate DirectX 11.3 or DirectX 12 installer. Check your installed version with DxDiag. Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer only when an older game needs a legacy file such as d3dx9_*.dll, XInput 1.3 or XAudio 2.7; that package adds side-by-side libraries and does not upgrade the DirectX runtime built into Windows.
What “latest DirectX download for Windows 10” actually means
There are two different things people call a DirectX download. The first is the DirectX runtime integrated into Windows 10. Windows 10 includes DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12, and Microsoft services those versions through Windows Update. There is no standalone DirectX 11.3 or DirectX 12 installer for Windows 10.

The second is an optional compatibility package for older games. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer installs legacy libraries that some games built with older DirectX SDK components still require. It does not replace, reinstall or upgrade the DirectX runtime reported by Windows.

Use Windows Update for the operating-system runtime; use Microsoft’s End-User Runtime when an older title identifies a missing legacy component.

Check the DirectX version already installed
DxDiag is Microsoft’s supported diagnostic utility for viewing the DirectX version on Windows 10. You do not need to download it separately.
- Open the Start menu and type
dxdiag. - Select DxDiag from the search results. If Windows asks whether to check digitally signed drivers, choose the option that lets the tool run; the version check is on the first page.
- In the System Information section, read the DirectX Version field.
The field tells you the Windows runtime version. It does not list every optional legacy library installed for individual games, so a game can still report a missing D3DX, XInput or XAudio file even when DxDiag shows DirectX 12.
Choose the right action
| Your situation | Correct action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| You want DirectX 11.3 or DirectX 12 updated | Install available Windows 10 updates | Updates the DirectX components delivered with Windows; Microsoft provides no separate installer for these versions. |
DxDiag shows a normal version, but an older game reports d3dx9_*.dll, XInput 1.3, XAudio 2.7, XACT or a related legacy file |
Install the Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer | Adds legacy side-by-side libraries used by some older applications; it does not modify the Windows DirectX runtime. |
| A game has a different error with no DirectX or missing-library reference | Follow the game publisher’s troubleshooting steps first | The End-User Runtime is a compatibility package, not a general repair for every launch or graphics problem. |
Update Windows 10’s built-in DirectX components
Because DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 are part of Windows 10, the manual update path is Windows Update rather than a separate download.

Do not search third-party download sites for a standalone “DirectX 12 for Windows 10” installer. Microsoft’s documented position is that updates for the included versions arrive through Windows Update and that no standalone package exists.
Download the legacy runtime for an older game
Use Microsoft’s Download Center and look specifically for the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Microsoft lists this package as version 9.29.1974.1, published July 15, 2024. The download file is named dxwebsetup.exe and Microsoft displays a size of 288.4 KB.
The small file is a web installer: it retrieves the required legacy components during setup. A 288.4 KB download therefore does not mean that every runtime file is contained in that one file. Keep the computer connected while the installer runs, and use the Download Center listing rather than a re-hosted executable.

When this package is appropriate
- The game explicitly names a missing
d3dx9_*.dll, D3DX10 or D3DX11 file. - The error identifies
XInput 1.3orXAudio 2.7. - The title depends on XACT or Managed DirectX 1.1 libraries from the older DirectX SDK.
- The game’s documentation specifically instructs you to install the DirectX End-User Runtime.
When it is not an upgrade
The End-User Runtime is not a newer DirectX version and should not be presented as a DirectX 12 update. Microsoft states that the package “does not modify the DirectX Runtime installed on your Windows OS in any way.” It installs additional libraries alongside the Windows runtime so older software can find the files it was built to use.

- Download
dxwebsetup.exefrom Microsoft’s Download Center. Confirm that the publisher and filename match the Microsoft listing before opening it. - Close the affected game and any launcher that may keep its files in use.
- Open the downloaded file. Approve the Windows permission prompt only if the file came from Microsoft’s Download Center.
- Read the license terms, accept them, and continue through the setup wizard.
- Allow the installer to connect to Microsoft and retrieve the legacy libraries it needs. Do not interrupt the process by shutting down the PC or disconnecting the network.
- When setup reports completion, select Finish, restart Windows if the wizard requests it, and launch the game again.
The installer may find that some files are already present. That is expected; its role is to supply the legacy side-by-side libraries required by older applications, not to replace newer Windows components.
Which legacy libraries it supplies
Microsoft describes the End-User Runtime as installing runtime libraries from the legacy DirectX SDK for games that use:
Rank #4
- AMD Radeon RX 550 Chipset, Silver plated PCB & all solid capacitors provide lower temperature, higher efficiency & stability
- 9CM unique fan provide low noise and huge airflow for your GPU

- D3DX9
- D3DX10
- D3DX11
- XAudio 2.7
- XInput 1.3
- XACT
- Managed DirectX 1.1
The list explains why a missing-file message can appear on a fully updated Windows 10 computer. A modern Windows installation can have DirectX 12 in its core runtime while lacking one of these older, separately deployed libraries.
Troubleshoot errors after installation
The game still reports the same DLL
- Copy the exact filename from the error message. Similar names are not interchangeable: for example, a D3DX9 file and XInput 1.3 come from different legacy components.
- Run the Microsoft End-User Runtime installer again from the original Download Center file and let it complete while online.
- Restart Windows, then test the game before changing files inside the game directory.
- If the message names a different dependency, consult the game publisher’s support page; installing the End-User Runtime cannot supply every third-party or game-specific file.
The installer will not run
- Make sure the downloaded file is actually
dxwebsetup.exeand was obtained from Microsoft’s Download Center. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and check whether Windows has provided an Unblock option for a file downloaded from the internet. Apply it only when you trust the source, then run the installer again.
- Temporarily close the game launcher and other programs that may be holding installer files open.
- Check Windows Update first. A pending restart or servicing failure can prevent other setup programs from completing.
The game crashes for another reason
A DirectX-related crash is not always a missing runtime. Graphics-driver problems, damaged game files, unsupported settings, overlays and unrelated application errors can produce similar symptoms. If the error does not identify one of the legacy libraries listed above, do not keep reinstalling DirectX; use the game’s own repair, file-verification or support procedure and check the exact crash text.

Safety and download hygiene
Use Microsoft’s Download Center for the End-User Runtime. Avoid sites that bundle a “DirectX latest version” executable with download managers, browser extensions or unrelated utilities. The documented Microsoft package is identified by its version, publication date and filename, so you can compare those details before running it.

Never download an individual DLL from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64 or a game folder simply because its name appears in an error. A DLL from an unknown source may be tampered with, the wrong architecture or an incompatible revision. The Microsoft runtime installer is designed to deploy the supported legacy set together.
Keep your normal antivirus protection enabled while downloading and installing. The End-User Runtime addresses compatibility; it is not a replacement for Windows security tools or for the game’s own update process.
Verify the result without changing system files manually
- Open
dxdiagand record the DirectX Version field. The field should continue to show the Windows runtime version; the End-User Runtime is not expected to change it. - Start the affected game from its normal launcher.
- If it opens, test the menu and a short gameplay session rather than assuming that reaching the title screen proves every component works.
- If the same message returns, capture the complete filename and any error code. That information distinguishes a missing legacy DirectX library from a driver, game-file or hardware problem.
Common misconceptions
“The newest number must replace every older DirectX file”
DirectX components are not one monolithic file set. Windows 10’s integrated runtime and the legacy SDK libraries can coexist. DirectX 12 does not automatically provide every D3DX, XAudio or XInput library used by older games.

DxDiag reports the integrated Windows runtime. It does not guarantee that every optional side-by-side library required by a particular title is installed. Use the game’s exact missing-file message to decide whether the End-User Runtime applies.
“A third-party DirectX updater is safer or newer”
Microsoft does not publish a separate Windows 10 installer for DirectX 11.3 or DirectX 12. A site promising a newer standalone core runtime is not following Microsoft’s documented servicing model. Windows Update is the supported route for those components.
“Installing the End-User Runtime will improve frame rates”
Microsoft documents this package for application compatibility, not for a quantified performance increase. Install it to satisfy a missing dependency, not as a graphics-performance tweak.
