directx2d.dll is usually an old, application-local file from Worms Armageddon, not a normal Windows component. If Windows says directx2d.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the game installation rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.
The file is associated with the 32-bit wa.exe game and older Worms Armageddon installations. It is not the same as Microsoft Direct2D, whose system library is d2d1.dll.
Fix 1: Verify or reinstall Worms Armageddon
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix. A missing directx2d.dll normally means the game installation is incomplete, damaged, incorrectly patched, or has been moved without all its files.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Worms Armageddon and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Start the game again.
Steam should download or restore missing files. If the game still fails, return to Properties, select Updates, and allow any available game update to install.

GOG or another legitimate launcher
Open the game’s launcher library and look for an option named Verify, Repair, Manage installation, or Scan and repair. Run that repair, then start the game from the launcher.
If there is no repair option:
- Back up saved games if the edition stores them outside the installation folder.
- Uninstall Worms Armageddon from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from your legitimate library.
- Apply the latest update offered for that edition.
- Launch the game once before adding modifications.
CD edition
Install the game from the original disc, then apply the legitimate update intended for that release. Do not combine files from a CD installation with DLLs from another edition, an unofficial patch, or a random archive.
If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties > Compatibility, enable a suitable older Windows compatibility mode, and run it as administrator. Compatibility mode can help the installer, but it does not replace updating the game itself.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the game reaches its menu without the directx2d.dll message. If the message changes to a different DLL, repair that named dependency instead of repeatedly replacing directx2d.dll.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 minutes
Antivirus protection can quarantine or remove an old game file, particularly after reinstalling Windows, moving the game folder, or applying an old patch.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
directx2d.dll,wa.exe, or the game’s installation folder. - Open the entry and review the detected file path and action.
- Restore the file only if it clearly belongs to your trusted, legitimate Worms Armageddon installation.
- Immediately verify or reinstall the game using its launcher.
Do not permanently disable Microsoft Defender to make the game start. If antivirus protection repeatedly removes the file, scan the installer and the entire game folder, then obtain a clean installation from your original store or disc.

If the file was restored but the game still crashes, the restored copy may be damaged or incompatible with the rest of the installation. A complete verification or reinstall is safer than keeping the isolated file.
Fix 3: Update the game and test compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
An old CD build can load directx2d.dll successfully and still crash because the game was designed for much older versions of Windows. A documented failure involving wa.exe listed DirectX2D.dll as the fault module with an access-violation exception. That is a crash inside the old game path, not proof that the file was missing.
First install the newest legitimate update available for your edition. Then test Windows compatibility:
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Click Run.
- Select Worms Armageddon if Windows lists it.
- Follow the prompts and test the recommended settings.
You can also apply settings manually:
- Find the game executable, commonly
wa.exe. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator for testing.
- If needed, select Run this program in compatibility mode and test an older Windows version.
- Click Apply, then OK.
Use the game’s current renderer and compatibility options where available. If compatibility mode makes no difference, turn it off and use the updated game build instead. Microsoft’s older-program compatibility guidance explains why older applications can fail on newer Windows versions.
Fix 4: Install legacy DirectX only when another DLL is named
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
directx2d.dll is not a standard Microsoft DirectX runtime file. Installing DirectX does not provide a verified replacement for it.

Download the runtime only from Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime page. Install it, restart Windows, and test the game again.
Do not install it merely because the filename contains the word “DirectX.” It will not repair a damaged Worms Armageddon installation or replace its application-local directx2d.dll.
Fix 5: Remove mixed or unofficial game files
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A game can fail when files from different versions are mixed together. This commonly happens after applying an old patch to a newer installation, copying files from another computer, or installing unofficial modifications.
- Close the game and launcher.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Remove unofficial DLL replacements and modified launch files.
- Use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
- If verification does not restore a consistent installation, uninstall the game.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original store, launcher, or disc.
- Apply only updates intended for that edition.
Do not use a DLL from another player’s folder as a substitute for a complete repair. Even if the filename matches, the file may belong to a different build or may have been altered.
Fix 6: Check the file location and architecture
Time needed: 5 minutes
A 32-bit game normally loads its private DLLs from the game directory. On 64-bit Windows, that does not mean you should copy the file to a Windows system folder.
Check the location like this:
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open Shortcut and click Open File Location.
- Look for
directx2d.dllbeside the game executable or in the game’s own folders. - If the file is elsewhere, do not automatically move it.
Do not copy directx2d.dll to:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows-managed components. System32 does not mean “all 32-bit files”; on 64-bit Windows it normally contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit Windows components. Neither location is the correct home for this game-private DLL.

A 32-bit game needs a compatible 32-bit dependency. A random 64-bit file cannot solve a 32-bit application error.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use Windows repair commands when several applications have missing system files, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or Windows reports broader corruption. These commands do not reliably recreate a third-party game DLL.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Worms Armageddon again.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence. If SFC reports repaired files but the game still shows the same error, return to the game’s launcher and verify or reinstall it.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time when the actual problem is a damaged game folder. Fix 8: Update graphics and chipset drivers if the file exists but the game crashes
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Driver updates will not normally restore a missing directx2d.dll, but they can matter when the file is present and the game crashes during rendering.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant entries under System devices, especially chipset-related devices.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Right-click the graphics adapter in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart and test again.
Use the graphics or computer manufacturer’s official support channel for drivers when Windows cannot find one. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, usually COM or ActiveX components. There is no reliable evidence that directx2d.dll is a self-registering component.

Do not run:
regsvr32 directx2d.dll
A likely result is an error saying that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Registration does not fix a missing, corrupted, incompatible, or game-private runtime file. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when the command applies.
Why downloading directx2d.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites and isolated files shared in forums or file archives. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, belong to another game build, be modified, or contain malware. Public file listings may show a sample size or hash, but that does not authenticate a safe copy for your installation.
Use these sources instead:
- Your Steam, GOG, or other legitimate game library
- The original game disc
- The game’s built-in verification or repair feature
- The official update path for your edition
- Microsoft’s official runtime pages when the error names a Microsoft DLL

No. It is not a normal Windows system DLL and should not be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which program installed directx2d.dll?
Public evidence most strongly associates it with old Worms Armageddon installations and its wa.exe executable. If another application displays the error, identify that application and repair its own installation.
Should I install DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET?
Install a runtime only when the error specifically names a missing component from that runtime. Microsoft’s DirectX package is not a proven source of directx2d.dll, and there is no reliable evidence that Visual C++ or .NET directly installs it.

No. Windows can show that message when a dependency of the named DLL cannot be loaded. Repair the complete game installation and check whether the dialog names another missing file.
What information matters if none of these fixes work?
Record the exact error text, Windows version, game edition, installation path, whether the file exists beside wa.exe, and whether Windows Security quarantined anything. That information distinguishes a missing file from an application crash and points to the correct repair path.
