msosvint.dll is a Microsoft Office component, not a normal Windows system file. When Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupt, or unable to load, repair or reinstall the specific legacy Office installation that supplied it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is publicly identified as Microsoft Office Services on the Web. It is associated with Office 2003 and Office 2010-era installations, and is commonly reported in Office’s shared Web Folders area rather than in C:WindowsSystem32. Public file records disagree about its exact version, size, language, and 32-bit or 64-bit build, so there is no single safe copy that works for every computer.

Fix msosvint.dll errors step by step
Follow these fixes in order. Stop when the affected program starts normally.
1. Identify the program requesting the file
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
The error may appear when launching an Office program, an older application that uses Office components, or a leftover startup entry from an incomplete uninstall. First establish what is actually requesting msosvint.dll.
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.

- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Write down the complete error message and the program name shown in its title bar.
- Close the message and try starting the suspected program again.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for Microsoft Office, Office 2003, Office 2010, or another older program installed around the time the error began.
- If the message appears immediately after signing in, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and look for an Office-related or unidentified entry. - For more detail, right-click the Start button, select Event Viewer, then open Windows Logs > Application. Look for an error recorded at the time of the failure and note the application name and faulting module.
Do not assume that the newest Office installation is responsible. Multiple Office versions can coexist, and Microsoft 365 repair may not restore a file belonging to Office 2003 or Office 2010.
2. Repair the matching Office installation
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged Office component.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, select the Microsoft Office product connected with the error.
- Select Change or Modify.
- Choose Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and open the program that produced the error.
For a Click-to-Run installation, Microsoft provides Quick Repair and Online Repair. Try Quick Repair first if it is offered. If the error remains, run Online Repair, which takes longer and may require Office to be configured again.
If the affected installation is Office 2003, the older sequence is Add or Remove Programs > Microsoft Office > Change > Detect and Repair. Keep the original installation disc or source available if the repair asks for it.
Recommended Free Tools
A successful repair normally means the error no longer appears and the affected Office program opens. If the same message returns, repeat the process only for the Office version that matches the program’s installation path or the Event Viewer entry.
3. Check Office’s version and architecture
Time needed: 5 minutes
A file from a different Office build may not work. This matters especially when replacing or reinstalling Office 2010, which had separate x86 and x64 packages.
To check the installed architecture:
- Open any working Office program.
- Select File > Account > About.
- Read the version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Older Office releases may show this information under File > Help instead.
Use the same architecture when repairing or reinstalling. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit installation, or assume that a 64-bit file can replace a 32-bit component. Windows also separates 32-bit and 64-bit program paths through WOW64 redirection.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Office will not open, return to Programs and Features, note the exact product name, and use its matching installer or original media. A current Office installation does not necessarily contain every component from an older release.
4. Restore the file only if Microsoft Defender quarantined it
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus quarantine is a possible cause, particularly if the error began immediately after a security scan. It is not proof that the file was malicious.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created when the error started.
- Expand a relevant entry and check the file path, detection details, and action taken.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The original path belongs to the trusted Office installation.
- The Office installation came from original Microsoft media or an organization’s trusted deployment source.
- The file’s digital signature and source can be verified.
- You are certain the detection was a false positive.
If those details are unclear, do not restore the item manually. Repair or reinstall Office instead. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored quarantined file again unless it is explicitly allowed, so adding an exception should be done only when the file and its source are trusted.
After restoration, run the Office program again. If the file is quarantined a second time, leave it isolated and reinstall Office from a trusted source rather than repeatedly allowing it.
5. Reinstall Office from matching original media
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Use this step when repair cannot find source files, reports that setup failed, or leaves the same error after restarting.
- Back up documents, templates, email data, and any custom Office settings.
- In Programs and Features, select the damaged Office product.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original Microsoft disc, licensed installation files, or your organization’s deployment source.
- Match the Office release and architecture identified earlier.
- Restart again and test the program.
Office 2003 support ended on April 9, 2014, and Office 2010 support ended in October 2020. These releases are unsupported, so reinstalling them may be necessary for an old application but leaves the computer without current product support.
Microsoft still provides Office 2010 Service Pack 2 packages for x86 and x64 systems, but those packages are updates, not replacements for the original Office 2010 installer. If you no longer have valid installation media, use a licensed replacement or an organization’s approved installation source.
If no Office program is installed but the error appears at startup, the cause may be an incomplete uninstall or leftover startup entry. Remove the obsolete application properly, or reinstall it and then uninstall it cleanly. Do not place msosvint.dll in a Windows system directory to silence the message.
6. Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader corruption
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus a restart
msosvint.dll is associated with Office rather than Windows itself. System File Checker is therefore not the normal way to restore it. Use Windows servicing commands when other system files are also damaged, Windows features fail, or Office repair itself cannot complete.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin), Windows PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test Office again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows system files; it should not be expected to restore an Office-owned DLL. If both commands report that they found no integrity violations, return to Office repair rather than repeating the commands.
If you prefer help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly running commands and interpreting logs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Office program remains the definitive fix for an Office-owned file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →7. Scan for malware or restore Windows after recent damage
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Use this branch if the file disappeared after an unknown installation, suspicious behavior, disk errors, or widespread application corruption.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If malware is suspected or Windows cannot remain stable, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and follow the restart prompt.
If the problem began after a recent installation or update, System Restore may help:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review affected programs and complete the restore.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling Office. Use it only when a suitable restore point exists, and back up important files first.
8. Do not update drivers or install unrelated runtimes for this file
Time needed: 5 minutes if checking, longer only if another error identifies a driver
There is no evidence that msosvint.dll is a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or hardware driver. Reinstalling those packages will not normally restore an Office component.
Check drivers only if the same error also names a driver or hardware component:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If you need help hunting through many device entries and determining which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation is performed by the full version, and it will not replace the Office installation that owns msosvint.dll.
9. Skip regsvr32 unless Microsoft specifically requires registration
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that msosvint.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.

regsvr32 msosvint.dll
Do not use it merely because the file has a .dll extension. Repair or reinstall the Office product instead.
Why the error appears
The common causes are:
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Office component was corrupted, removed, or incompletely installed | Repair Office, then reinstall it if necessary |
| Wrong Office release or architecture | Match the repair source to the installed Office product |
| Antivirus quarantine or deletion | Verify the original path and signature, then prefer Office repair |
| A dependency is missing | Repair the complete Office installation rather than copying dependencies |
| Leftover startup entry after uninstall | Remove the obsolete entry or reinstall and uninstall the originating program cleanly |
| Broader Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Malware or disk damage | Run Defender scans and consider System Restore |
The wording “specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL, even when msosvint.dll itself exists. That is another reason repairing the complete Office installation is safer than replacing one file.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A DLL download may have the wrong Office release, language, architecture, or build. It may also be modified, unsigned, bundled with unwanted software, or missing dependencies. Even a genuine-looking file may not match the installation that requested it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not download msosvint.dll from arbitrary DLL repositories, rename another file, or copy it into System32. The safe sources are the original Microsoft Office installer, licensed installation media, an organization’s deployment source, or Microsoft’s official Office support and download pages.
Frequently asked questions
Is msosvint.dll part of Windows?
No. Public metadata identifies it as a Microsoft Office shared component. It is not established as a Windows system DLL.
Which Office versions contain it?
Public records associate it with Office 2003 and Office 2010-era installations, but the reported versions, sizes, and architectures conflict. Identify the installed Office product before repairing or reinstalling.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file alone. Those packages are unrelated unless the error separately names a runtime component from one of them.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will SFC restore msosvint.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while msosvint.dll is associated with Office. Use SFC only for broader Windows corruption.
What if Office repair succeeds but the error remains?
Confirm which program requests the file, check for multiple Office versions, verify 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and reinstall the matching legacy Office product. Also check Event Viewer for a missing dependency.
Can I keep using Office 2003 or Office 2010?
They may continue to run for compatibility purposes, but both are unsupported. If repeated repairs fail, back up your data, remove the damaged installation, and move to a supported Office release where possible.
