Add the running game if it is missing. If the status works but the in-game overlay does not, switch the game from true fullscreen to borderless or windowed fullscreen instead. These steps are for the Discord desktop app; menu names and overlay behavior have changed since 2024.
First identify what is not working
“Game detection” can mean several different things: Discord may not show a live Playing status, the game may be absent from Registered Games, friends may not see your activity, the game may not be available as a stream source, or the Discord overlay may not appear. Treat these as separate features: fixing one does not necessarily fix the others.

Five fixes to try
1. Turn on Activity Sharing
- In the Discord desktop app, open User Settings using the gear icon.
- Go to Activity Settings → Activity Privacy.
- Enable the control that allows Discord to share your current activity.
- Open Activity Settings → Registered Games and check the affected game’s individual detection control.
Discord’s Activity Sharing FAQ distinguishes the global sharing setting from per-game controls: a game-level setting cannot make activity visible if global sharing is off. Server activity display and connected-account activity are separate controls, and Recent Games or profile history is not the same as a live Playing status.
2. Add the game while it is running
- Launch the game normally and leave it open.
- Open User Settings → Activity Settings → Registered Games.
- Select Add it or the manual-add option shown in your client.
- Choose the running game process, then make sure its detection control is enabled.
Discord’s Recently Played Games guidance says to open the game before using Add it. A launcher, mod loader, helper, or anti-cheat process may appear instead of the game’s familiar title; if so, select the process that corresponds to the running game. Launcher and game executables can change, so an old registration may no longer match after an update.

3. Re-register a game that is already listed
If the title appears but is not recognized as active, try refreshing its registration. This is a practical workaround, not a guaranteed Discord repair:
- In Registered Games, turn detection off for the affected title.
- Close the game and fully quit Discord from the system tray.
- Reopen Discord, launch the game, and return to Registered Games.
- Turn detection back on. If the problem remains, remove the stale entry and add the running process again.
Restarting both applications is also a sensible first check after a Discord, game, Windows, or launcher update. If only one title fails while others work, focus on that game’s process, launcher, or compatibility rather than reinstalling Discord immediately.

4. Switch to borderless fullscreen if the overlay is missing
Use this fix when the live status is correct but Discord’s in-game overlay does not appear. In the game’s display or graphics settings, change Fullscreen to Borderless Fullscreen, Windowed Fullscreen, or Borderless Windowed, then restart the game and test the overlay while the game window is focused.
Discord’s overlay notice says the revamped overlay supports windowed fullscreen and borderless fullscreen, but not true fullscreen; it is also hidden when the game window is not focused. This addresses overlay behavior, not whether Discord detects the game for status.

5. Share the screen directly if game detection cannot provide a stream source
- Join a voice channel.
- Select Share Your Screen or Screen.
- Choose the game window, or the entire screen, and start sharing.
Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share guidance says you can try manually adding a game that is not listed; if Discord neither detects nor accepts it manually, it may not be available through the game-specific streaming workflow. Direct screen sharing is a fallback, not identical to game capture: sharing the whole screen can expose notifications or other open windows, and audio or performance behavior may differ.

Confirm you are using the desktop app
Check that you installed and opened the Discord desktop application, rather than relying only on Discord in a browser. The web client does not provide the same local-game detection and overlay workflow. If Registered Games or Game Overlay is missing entirely, first confirm which client is open; community reports describe those sections being absent in browser use, though this is not an official guarantee about every browser configuration.

Check launch context and conflicts
These are conditional troubleshooting tests, not universal Discord requirements:
- Launch Discord before the game, then start the game from its usual launcher.
- If the game runs with administrator privileges and Discord does not, test compatible privilege levels. Do not routinely elevate applications unless needed.
- Temporarily turn off other overlays or capture tools, such as Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, or recording software. If Discord starts working, re-enable tools one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Test without mods, alternate launchers, or compatibility layers if those change how the game starts.
- Check security software if it may be blocking Discord’s access to the game process or overlay.
Check for a service issue or ask support
If detection stopped suddenly across multiple games, check Discord’s Status support section before treating it as a local fault. If you contact Discord Support, include the game title, launcher, operating system, Discord client channel, and the exact symptom—for example, missing status, unavailable stream source, or overlay failure.

How the features differ
- Game detection and activity: Discord recognizes a running application and may show a live Playing status, subject to sharing controls.
- Game streaming: Discord offers the game as a stream source; a game not recognized or manually addable may not work through this route.
- Game Overlay: Discord controls appear over the game. Overlay compatibility can fail even when status detection works.
- Rich Presence: Extra game details such as party or map information depend on the game providing that integration; basic detection does not guarantee those details.
