Before joining a public Discord server, set up your own DM, message-request, friend-request and sensitive-media controls. Then check the server’s rules, entry requirements and moderation signals: verification, Rules Screening, AutoMod and raid protections are controlled by server staff, not by new members.
Set your personal contact and content controls first
These options affect how Discord handles contact and media for your account. Menu labels can change between app versions, so confirm the current controls in your app.

Review DM spam filtering and Message Requests
Open User Settings > Content & Social and check the DM spam-filter option. Discord describes choices to filter messages from non-friends, filter all DMs, or turn filtering off. Its support articles describe defaults in different contexts, so check the option actually shown for your account rather than assuming a universal default. Discord’s Safer Messaging guide explains the controls.
Message Requests give you a chance to inspect a sender before accepting. You can review the profile, accept or ignore the request, or view spam requests separately. The preview hides attachments; links appear as plain text and cannot be selected. Keep this screening step unless you deliberately want messages to go straight to your regular DM list. According to Discord’s Message Requests guidance, updated September 22, 2026, requests are on for everyone, but teen and unconfirmed accounts cannot disable them; regional protections can also vary. A server can disable requests from its members.

Choose a sensitive-media filter
In User Settings > Content & Social, review the sensitive-content filters and choose whether media should be blurred or otherwise filtered. Discord says a blur setting applies to both historical and new media. This is your personal exposure control; it is separate from the explicit-image filter a server’s staff can configure.
Restrict friend requests and shared-server contact
Review friend-request permissions so that requests are limited to the people you are comfortable hearing from. Discord allows controls involving friends of friends and people in shared servers, and you can deselect all listed request sources. Also review whether members of shared servers can DM you. Check what a public server requires before joining
Server owners and administrators control access requirements. They can add friction that limits who can participate, but a requirement is not proof that a community is safe. Look for requirements and rules before you accept an invite or apply.
Understand verification levels
Discord documents five server verification levels. The time thresholds below are Discord’s operational requirements, not measures of how much a setting reduces abuse.

Discord says users who do not meet a server’s verification requirements cannot send text messages in its channels or join voice channels. Its Verification Levels guidance, updated September 19, 2025, recommends Low for basic security on public servers. Staff may raise the level during a raid and restore it after the incident.
Look for Rules Screening and the server’s join model
Rules Screening is available to Community servers. When enabled, new members must agree to the server’s rules before talking, reacting or DMing other members. Staff configure it, and manual verification can bypass the requirement. Read the rules before agreeing: screening confirms acceptance, not the quality of moderation. Discord documents three join modes: Invite Only, Apply to Join and Discoverable. An application lets administrators review a prospective member; Discovery makes eligible Community servers findable and joinable through Server Discovery. Judge moderation signals without treating them as guarantees
AutoMod and explicit-media filtering
AutoMod can apply built-in or custom keyword rules, block flagged content, alert a moderator channel and, for applicable custom rules, time out users. Its spam rules target unsolicited spam and invite spam; a mention-spam rule can limit how many users a message mentions. Server staff configure these controls.

Discord’s AutoMod FAQ, updated June 15, 2026, says the machine-learning spam filter may miss content people consider spam, including nonsensical words spread across messages or copy-and-paste spam. AutoMod can reduce exposure, but it cannot guarantee that every unwanted message will be stopped. Discord’s Raid Protection guide also recommends explicit-media filtering and limiting @everyone and @here permissions to trusted roles.
Raid response and staff availability
Discord recommends Raid Protection alerts, verification, AutoMod and restricted mass-mention permissions. The guide notes that Raid Protection alerts were rolling out and might not be available to every server. During an active raid, staff can pause invites, enable slowmode, adjust AutoMod and temporarily raise verification. Members cannot make those server-side changes. A visible, understandable moderation process is a more useful signal than a claim that a server is “safe.”
Compare communities using the same checks
If you are deciding between public servers, assess each on the same practical points:
- Access friction: Is entry by invite, application or discovery? What verification is required?
- Contact and visibility: Are rules presented before participation? Are DMs, mentions and media managed thoughtfully?
- Moderation response: Does the server appear to use AutoMod, and are moderators available to respond?
- Fit: Do the rules, topics and content boundaries match what you want from the community?
These checks help you make an informed choice, but no single toggle or entry requirement establishes that a server will be safe. If something suspicious reaches you, do not engage just because it passed a filter; use Discord’s reporting tools and leave or block as appropriate.
