Discord server verification is not one single identity check. Verification Levels set account and time thresholds for participation; Rules Screening asks members to accept community rules; Apply to Join holds applicants for human review. Moderators can also inspect member details and use automated raid and spam controls. Choosing the right tool depends on whether you want to limit immediate participation, confirm rule acceptance, or decide who gets in.
What Discord server verification means
Discord’s five Verification Levels are server-wide participation thresholds: they determine what requirements a person must meet before sending text messages in server channels. They do not certify a server or establish that a member is trustworthy. A verified phone number supersedes the other requirements, according to Discord’s Verification Levels documentation.

Discord says members who do not meet the server’s threshold cannot send text messages or join voice channels until they meet the requirements. Administrators and moderators with the appropriate permissions can still message despite the level. The setting applies server-wide; channel permissions can add separate restrictions. These levels add friction for new or unverified accounts, but Discord does not publish a measured effectiveness rate or false-positive rate.

The route depends on server type and client. On desktop or browser, a non-Community server uses Server Settings > Safety Setup; a Community server uses Safety Setup > DM and Spam Protection. Discord’s mobile help route lists Server Settings > Moderation. Labels can change as Discord updates its interface.

Rules Screening confirms rule acceptance
Rules Screening is for making sure new members see and accept the server’s rules before participating—not for choosing entrants based on answers. It requires a Community server. In Safety Setup or DM and Spam Protection, enable the requirement for members to accept rules before they can talk or DM. Rules can be selected from examples or customized, up to 16. While pending, a member cannot talk, DM server members, or react. Manually verifying a member from Server Settings > Members bypasses this requirement. Discord notes that the extra step can lead some people to abandon joining, but does not give a drop-off percentage. See the Rules Screening FAQ.
Apply to Join adds an application and human decision
Apply to Join is a separate join mode for servers where it is available. Applicants answer custom questions and cannot view server content while their application is pending. Administrators can approve, reject, or interview applicants; the review page includes why the person wants to join and when they joined Discord and submitted the application.

Discord documents three join settings—Invite Only, Apply to Join, and Discoverable—in its Server Member Applications guide. Availability is rolling out gradually, and enabling the feature is done through the desktop app. Applicants can submit and manage applications on mobile, and administrators can review decisions there. Some special invite links created by members with Kick Members permission bypass applications, so this mode is not an absolute gate for every invitation.

What moderators can review after someone joins
The Members page gives administrators and appropriately permitted moderators a review surface documented for desktop and browser. It can show when someone joined the server and Discord, how they joined, their roles, messages, rule acceptance, verification status, and safety signals such as Unusual DM Activity, Unusual Account Activity, Timed Out, or Quarantined. Discord describes Unusual DM Activity as a signal that a member may have sent a high volume of DMs to non-friend server members, but does not disclose its specific detection criteria. Server thresholds versus account-level prompts
A Discord “Verification Required” prompt is not the same thing as the server’s chosen Verification Level. Discord says the prompt may result from a server requiring verified accounts or from account activity that triggers an additional check. Examples include joining several servers quickly, messaging several non-friends, posting faster than a person could manage, or using third-party clients or modifications. These are possible triggers, not a definitive explanation for every prompt. See Discord’s Verification Required FAQ.

For public servers, Discord’s raid guidance recommends Low Verification Level as a baseline. If a raid is underway, Discord advises raising the threshold to High or Highest, then restoring the previous setting afterward. No threshold guarantees that a raid or spam will be stopped. Discord also recommends AutoMod rules and alerts, Raid Protection alerts, explicit-media filtering, trusted moderators, pausing invites, Slowmode, and reporting raids.

Discord says Raid Protection can automatically require CAPTCHA for new joiners for the next hour after detecting a raid. Alerts are rolling out gradually and may not be available to every server. These are controls to layer with moderation, not substitutes for it; consult Discord’s raid-protection guide.

Choose the control for the job
- To add basic account and tenure friction: set a Verification Level.
- To require members to acknowledge community expectations: enable Rules Screening.
- To assess applicants before they can see server content: use Apply to Join if it is available and fits the server.
- To monitor or respond to behavior: review the Members page and layer AutoMod, Raid Protection, moderation, and incident controls.
