The rollout was presented as limited-time fun, and users quickly asked Discord to keep it or allow custom sounds. It was not the same feature as Discord’s later Soundboard for voice channels.
What were the 2021 sound packs?
For April Fools’ Day 2021, Discord made alternate sounds for notification pings and rings available as a temporary feature. In a Discord social post quoted by PC Gamer’s April 1 roundup, the company said users could restart their desktop clients and go to Settings → Notifications to replace their usual alerts.

The three named options were:
- Lil Yachty
- Chaos
- My Uncle
These were predefined packs, not a documented system for uploading a user’s own notification sounds. The contemporary reporting describes them as an April Fools feature available for a limited time, rather than a permanent setting.
When and where were they available?
A video description published by MafuSaku on April 2, 2021 says the packs were available on desktop and browsers from April 1 through April 9. Its timestamps identify sections for Chaos, My Uncle, and Lil Yachty. That date range comes from the creator’s description; the official FAQ linked from the page could not be retrieved, so it should not be treated as verified official documentation.

Why did users ask Discord to keep them?
Archived Discord Support Community posts from April 1, 2021 show users reacting to the feature while it was live. Their wording included “Please make the sound packs permanent,” “Where is my Lil Yachty notification pack ?????” and “Why can’t I enable sound packs?” Those posts capture excitement and confusion around a brief release; they are not current troubleshooting guidance.
Some users also suggested per-server sounds and the ability to add custom sounds. One poster argued that customization should not be locked behind Nitro. These were community requests, not evidence of Discord’s plans, policy, or a commitment to restore the notification packs.

Discord introduced Soundboard in an official announcement dated April 6, 2023. It is a voice-channel feature for reacting with sounds, not a return of the 2021 notification packs. The distinction is purpose: the packs changed personal notification alerts, while Soundboard lets people play sounds in voice channels.
| Feature | April Fools notification packs (2021) | Soundboard (announced 2023) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Replace notification pings and rings | Play sounds as reactions in voice channels |
| Availability described | Temporary rollout; a contemporary creator description gives April 1–9, 2021 for desktop and browsers | Introduced in Discord’s April 6, 2023 announcement |
| How sounds were supplied | Three named preset packs: Lil Yachty, Chaos, and My Uncle | Communities can upload sounds to their server soundpack |
| Nitro’s stated role | Not established in the reviewed contemporary sources | Nitro subscribers can use server sounds across servers, subject to permissions |
Discord’s 2023 launch announcement specified MP3 files, a 512 KB size limit, and a maximum duration of five seconds. Those specifications apply to the announced Soundboard feature, not to the 2021 notification packs. Discord’s own description calls Soundboard “a new way to react in Voice channels with sounds curated by your community” (Discord’s Soundboard announcement).
