Dishonored: Death of the Outsider received favorable critic reviews, with praise for its flexible stealth-action and focused scope. Metacritic’s overall page reports an 82/100 from 47 critic reviews; its PC page reports 81/100 from 28 reviews. The main qualification in the reviews is that this is a smaller adventure than a full series entry, and some critics preferred Dishonored 2’s story or mission design.

That score indicates broad approval, not a claim that every critic agreed on the story, scale or structure. The reviews’ recurring positive case is the series’ stealth-action sandbox: players can choose how to approach situations, while the shorter standalone format keeps the adventure focused.
What did critics praise—and what held it back?
Freedom and a focused stealth-action adventure
Critical Hit described the game as a “smaller, more focused standalone expansion” that concentrates on action-stealth. Other displayed reviews likewise praise the freedom to solve encounters in different ways. The appeal is less about expanding every part of Dishonored 2 and more about delivering another compact playground for stealth and action.
#1 Best Overall
- Customize your gameplay options & difficulty settings for a tailored adventure. Make the experience more challenging (or easier) by changing myriad parameters related to stealth, movement and combat
- The Void Engine allows for significant advances to all game systems, including responsive stealth and combat AI, lighting and graphical rendering, impressive urban environments, & story presentation
- From the grimy, rat-infested streets of Dunwall to the lush, exotic coasts of a decaying Karnaca, immerse yourself in stylized locales created by Arkane's premiere art and narrative teams
- Advanced bone charm crafting & all-new upgrade trees allow you to customize your powers in vastly different ways. Become a living shadow to silently stalk your targets, link enemies, or mesmerize foes
- Use each character's set of powers, gadgets and uniquely-tuned weapons in creative ways as you explore the world - whether you fight your way through the city streets or sneak across the rooftops
Smaller scope, familiar material and a less even story
The reduced scale is also the key trade-off. Some displayed reviews mention reused or revisited locations and a smaller set of powers. PCGamesN praised gameplay changes and the conclusion but noted that the fourth mission returns to a Dishonored 2 location and that the finale feels more linear. GameStar considered the story weaker than Dishonored 2, while arguing that greater gameplay freedom made the experience more entertaining. These are examples of individual reviews, not a count of how often each criticism appeared across the full set.
How does the PC score compare?
Metacritic’s PC-specific critic page reports 81/100 from 28 reviews, with 20 positive, four mixed and no negative reviews. That is one point below the overall aggregate, but the pages cover different sets of reviews, so the difference should not be read as evidence that PC critics were meaningfully more negative. Like the overall figure, it is a snapshot of an aggregator page accessed in 2026, based on reviews published in 2017, and could change as the page updates. Metacritic’s PC critic page.

Are critic reviews and user ratings saying the same thing?
No. Metacritic separately lists a user score of 7.2/10 from 468 user ratings, labeled “Mixed or Average.” User ratings are a different measure from professional critic reviews and should not be combined with the 82/100 critic aggregate. The rating and count reflect the page as accessed in 2026 and may change as users add ratings. Metacritic’s overall page.

So a first-time player can begin here, but “standalone” does not mean the series context is irrelevant: returning players may get more from Billie’s connection to Daud and the wider lore. Bethesda’s description of the game as an entry point is publisher framing; the review consensus is most useful for judging its compact stealth-action design and how its story and mission structure compare with Dishonored 2.
