It is a reveal, not gameplay footage. Larian has confirmed turn-based combat, but says the game uses a new ruleset rather than simply repeating Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Larian’s announcement followed on December 12, describing Divinity as a brand-new RPG in development and the studio’s most ambitious title yet. The studio says this is its first game entitled simply Divinity, despite its long history with the series. Read Larian’s announcement.
Is the trailer gameplay?
No. It is a cinematic announcement trailer, so its scenes should not be treated as demonstrations of the game’s interface, combat, or moment-to-moment play. The reveal establishes the title and setting; it does not show how the finished game will play.

What kind of game is Divinity?
Larian describes Divinity as an RPG set in Rivellon. In an interview published December 16, 2025, founder and game director Swen Vincke confirmed that combat will be turn-based, but said the game has a new ruleset built on lessons from the studio’s previous games. That confirms the broad combat approach, not the specific mechanics or how closely they will resemble earlier titles. Read PC Gamer’s interview with Larian.
A new ruleset, not a confirmed sequel to Original Sin 2
The announced title is Divinity, not Divinity: Original Sin 3. Vincke described its ruleset as new, so it is premature to assume that the game is a direct mechanical continuation or clone of Original Sin 2.

- Go anywhere, talk to anyone, and interact with everything! Kill any NPC without sacrificing your progress, and speak to every animal. Even ghosts might be hiding a secret or two!

- Play with your friends online (up to 4 players) or in local split-screen with drop-in/drop-out multiplayer. PvP hot-seat mode: Battle your friends in round-robin, hero to hero!
- Story mode: A new difficulty setting for players who wish to enjoy the lauded narrative, but still want to enjoy the combat.
- An entirely re-written journal to catalogue your journey and reflect on your quests. Character romance, disagreements, and unique quest-lines pushing the boundaries between fellowship and feud!
Ambitions for player choice and tone
Vincke told PC Gamer that the studio’s intended level of player agency is “much higher” than in Baldur’s Gate 3. This is Larian’s stated ambition, not a measured or independently verified comparison of the finished games.
The trailer’s horror imagery also does not necessarily describe the game’s entire tone. Writing director Adam Smith told PC Gamer that Larian wants to include light and hope alongside horror, and to ask players how they respond to it. That is the developer’s description of its creative intent, not a guarantee of the final balance.
Rank #3
- The ability to build your own ultimate fighting creature from body parts collected in battle. This creature's power is literally the sum of its body parts, and once created it will follow your commands Golem fashion.
- Sequel to an award-winning Divinity RPG series, that makes use of the same classless system that was incorporated in earlier games, which allows you to choose your own path as you become a Dragon Knight.
- For the first time, an RPG unlocks the power of the Dragon. Climb high and vaporize all that stands in your way as you strategically use both your human and dragon forms to defeat Damian and become the ultimate Dragon Knight.
- Divinity II provides a wide range of moral choices while questing. When you make these choices, the consequences of your actions appear throughout game play, and keep the action exciting and intertwined.
- Use of powerful Battle Towers, vast citadels accessible via the relic known as the Dragon Stone. The Dragon Stone allows you to teleport to the Battle Tower at any moment so that you can utilize the powers within.
Do you need to play the earlier Divinity games first?
No. Larian says previous experience is not required. The studio adds that players familiar with Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 may get greater understanding and continuity, but it has not described them as prerequisites for following the new game.
If you want to explore Rivellon before the new game arrives, Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition is one optional place to start. Larian’s official site lists the game and selected-platform purchase options; playing it should not be taken as a preview of the new game’s rules or combat. Visit the official Divinity site.

When does Divinity release, and what platforms will it be on?
The reviewed official materials do not establish a release date or platform list. PC Gamer’s December 16, 2025 interview reported that Larian had not made an early-access decision at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not confirmation of the studio’s position in October 2026. Check the official Divinity site for announcements; no platform or release details should be assumed from the cinematic trailer alone.
