Divinity: Original Sin 2 launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 15, 2025—not just recently. For many players who already own the previous console version, the current-generation release is a free upgrade, although Japan has a stated paid-upgrade exception and some upgrade paths depend on owning a disc-drive console.
When did Divinity: Original Sin 2 come to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2?
Larian Studios announced the releases on December 15, 2025. The game is available as a standalone title on all three platforms, so you do not need to play another game in the series first. Do existing owners have to buy it again?
Usually not. Larian says owners of the Switch, PS4, or Xbox One version can receive the free update applicable to their console. If the old version is still installed, the update should be available there; if it was uninstalled, Larian says to find the relevant new-generation store page and download the free upgrade. Japan is an explicit exception: Larian lists a ¥100 charge for Switch-to-Switch 2 and PS4-to-PS5 upgrades. Entitlements may also depend on territory, format, account, or storefront, so check the local store listing before relying on a free upgrade.
PS5: disc owners need a disc-drive PS5
PlayStation’s US listing presents the PS4 and PS5 digital versions together and says PS4 owners can get the PS5 digital version at no extra cost. If you own the PS4 disc, you must insert it to download or play the PS5 version. That means the disc-based upgrade path does not work on a disc-free PS5. PlayStation’s US listing

Xbox Series X|S
Larian includes Xbox Series X|S in the release and its general free-upgrade guidance for Xbox One owners. The guidance does not establish identical entitlement for every territory or format, so confirm the offer on the Xbox store using the account that owns the earlier version.
Switch 2

Is the Switch 2 edition a remaster?
No. Larian explicitly says the release is not a remake or remaster. Nintendo UK describes the Switch 2 edition as offering higher resolution and an increased framerate compared with the earlier Switch experience. Those are Nintendo’s stated Switch 2 features; the available platform information does not establish equivalent enhancements or comparable frame-rate targets across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
How can you play, and how many players are supported?
Larian describes solo play, online multiplayer, and couch co-op. The platform listings add specific multiplayer details, which vary by platform:

For Switch 2, local wireless and online multiplayer are distinct options in Nintendo’s listing. For PS5 and Xbox, Larian confirms couch co-op, but the cited platform details do not specify a local player count.
What changed after launch on PS5 and Xbox?
On March 5, 2026, Larian published hotfix version 3.6.0.7178759 for PS5 and Xbox Series. Its notice lists fixes involving performance and FPS drops, loading speed for some saves, an equipment bug, item teleportation, and Xbox multiplayer disconnections. Which current-generation version should you choose?
- Choose Switch 2 if handheld or hybrid play and local wireless are important. Nintendo specifically documents higher resolution and increased framerate for this edition.
- Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X|S if you prefer those console ecosystems or want couch co-op. For a PS4 disc upgrade, you need a PS5 with a disc drive.
- Check ownership and region first if you already have an older console version. The upgrade is generally free under Larian’s guidance, but Japan has a stated ¥100 exception for the listed Nintendo and PlayStation upgrades.
