Divinity: Original Sin is best suited to players who want tactical, turn-based combat, flexible quests, and room to experiment with character systems—and who don’t mind a steep learning curve. The review picture is positive, but the original 2014 release and 2015 Enhanced Edition are distinct versions, so check which one a score or store listing refers to before comparing them.

What reviews say about Divinity: Original Sin

Selected reviews highlight the game’s tactical combat, deep character systems, reactive world, and freedom in how quests can unfold. Metacritic’s critic excerpts praise the depth and the way character attributes matter in the world, as well as combat and quests; these are examples of the critical response, not proof that every reviewer agreed. Metacritic’s Enhanced Edition page displays an 88 Metascore based on 39 critic reviews and an 8.2 user score based on 739 ratings, as accessed on October 8, 2026. Aggregator totals can change and vary by platform view, so treat these as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent score.

The original game’s review excerpt from Eurogamer recommends it to RPG fans while warning that the challenge starts early. Interface difficulties and a substantial learning curve also appear in selected review excerpts. That complexity can be a draw for players who enjoy learning interlocking systems, but a poor fit for anyone looking for a highly guided or immediately accessible RPG. Read Eurogamer’s original-game review.

Classic or Enhanced Edition?

Classic is the original release, dated June 30, 2014 on Steam. The Enhanced Edition followed on October 27, 2015. Larian describes the latter as a revised version with additional content and modes; Steam’s listing names more content, new game modes, full voiceovers, split-screen multiplayer, and improvements. Those feature descriptions come from the publisher’s store listing, not independent measurements.

Classic June 30, 2014 Steam describes a party-based RPG in which Source Hunters investigate a murder that leads into a larger plot, with solo or cooperative play. Confirm that a Classic listing is available for your platform and that you want the original release.
Enhanced Edition October 27, 2015 Larian’s Steam description presents a revised version with added content and modes, including full voiceovers and split-screen multiplayer. Check the exact Enhanced Edition listing for your platform and its stated features.

Does it support solo and co-op play?

Steam lists single-player and co-op for both versions. For the Enhanced Edition, Steam specifically lists shared/split-screen support. The exact co-op options can depend on platform, so check the store listing for the version and platform you intend to use rather than assuming features are identical everywhere.

Where to buy: check the store terms, too

GOG’s Enhanced Edition listing says its version is DRM-free and can be played offline without GOG Galaxy, and lists Windows, Linux, and macOS support. Those terms describe GOG’s offer; they do not establish the DRM or offline terms of other storefronts. Steam also lists the Enhanced Edition, but consult its current page for the terms and supported features that apply to your purchase.
