dkres.dll Is Missing: Restore Diskeeper Safely on Windows

Length10 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

The dkres.dll errors you may see

Windows may report:

  • “dkres.dll is missing”
  • “dkres.dll was not found”
  • “Cannot find dkres.dll”
  • “Failed to load dkres.dll”
  • “The program can’t start because dkres.dll is missing from your computer”
  • “The application or DLL is not a valid Windows image”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because dkres.dll was not found”

The exact wording varies between Windows 10, Windows 11, and the application that calls the file. A second line may also identify a missing dependency rather than dkres.dll itself.

The 60-second answer

dkres.dll is an application file belonging to Diskeeper (TM) Disk Defragmenter, historically developed by Executive Software International, Inc. It is not a Windows component, and Windows normally does not need it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the same Diskeeper edition using its original installer. If you no longer have the installer, contact Condusiv Technologies support for the correct legacy installer. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into a Windows system folder.

Before reinstalling, check whether antivirus software quarantined the file, whether Diskeeper is still listed in Installed apps, and whether the program requires an x86 or x64 installer.

What dkres.dll is

The internal file description is DKRES.DLL. It is associated with Diskeeper disk-defragmentation software and is an application component rather than a Microsoft Windows library.

Historical Diskeeper installations used different product generations, editions, languages, and architectures. Some installers contained separate x86 and x64 setup files. A DLL from one release is not automatically compatible with another release, even if the filename is identical.

The file may have been installed under a path such as:

C:Program FilesExecutive SoftwareDiskeeper

or:

C:Program FilesCondusiv TechnologiesDiskeeper1033

These are clues, not guaranteed locations. Your installed version may use a different folder.

Is dkres.dll malware

The filename alone cannot prove whether a file is safe. A copy inside a legitimate Diskeeper installation folder is more plausible than an unexpected copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, or a Windows system directory.

Check four things:

  1. Location
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the General and Details tabs.

  2. Digital signature
If a Digital Signatures tab exists, inspect the signer. An absent or invalid signature is not conclusive by itself, especially with older software, but it deserves caution.

  3. Parent application
Determine which executable is requesting the DLL. The error may come from Diskeeper, an old startup entry, or another program retaining a reference to a removed installation.

  4. Security history
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Look for a detection involving the Diskeeper installation.

Only restore a quarantined file after confirming that it came from a legitimate Diskeeper installer and that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing or restoring a threat can expose the device.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Diskeeper

This is the most likely solution because dkres.dll is supplied by Diskeeper, not Windows.

Check whether Diskeeper is still installed

On Windows 11:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Diskeeper.

On Windows 10:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Search for Diskeeper.

If it appears, select it and look for Modify, Repair, Change, or Uninstall, depending on the installer. Use Repair if available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows does not offer repair:

  1. Close Diskeeper and any related background process.
  2. Find the original Diskeeper installer.
  3. Right-click the installer.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Repair if offered.
  6. Otherwise, uninstall Diskeeper, restart Windows, and run the installer again.

If Diskeeper does not appear in the installed-app list, locate the original installer or contact Condusiv support. Legacy Diskeeper download accounts have been retired, so an old license may require support assistance rather than an automatic download.

Match the installer architecture

Do not replace an x64 installation with an old x86 DLL, or copy an x86 file into an x64 program folder.

If the installer offers separate setup files, select the one intended for the installed application:

  • x86 is for a 32-bit application.
  • x64 is for a 64-bit application.

The Windows operating-system architecture and the application architecture are not always the same. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows and still require its x86 files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installation, restart Windows and open Diskeeper. The repair worked if the program opens without the dkres.dll message and the file is present in the Diskeeper installation folder.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

If the same error returns, confirm that you repaired the correct Diskeeper edition and that another startup entry is not calling an older installation.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine an old application file, particularly after a definition update.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent items involving Diskeeper or dkres.dll.
  5. Expand a detection to see its path and action.
  6. Do not select Allow on device unless you have verified the file’s source.

If the file came from your original Diskeeper installer and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive, restore it only according to your security vendor’s guidance. A safer approach is often to reinstall Diskeeper from a verified installer instead of restoring a possibly damaged file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not broadly disable antivirus protection. If an exclusion is necessary, keep it narrowly limited and remove it when the installation is complete.

Fix 3: Confirm whether the file is missing or only blocked

A “missing” message does not always mean the file has been deleted.

In File Explorer:

  1. Browse to the Diskeeper installation directory.
  2. Search for dkres.dll.
  3. If the file exists, right-click it and select Properties.
  4. On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox or button.
  5. Apply the change only if the file came from a trusted installer.
  6. Start Diskeeper again.

If the file exists but the error says it is corrupt, is not a valid Windows image, or is not designed to run on Windows, do not replace only the DLL. Reinstall the complete Diskeeper package. The file may be the wrong architecture, damaged, or dependent on another missing library.

Fix 4: Capture the complete error and identify the caller

“The specified module could not be found” can mean that dkres.dll exists but a dependency required by it is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record:

  • The full error text.
  • The name of the executable shown in the message.
  • The time the error appears.
  • Whether it occurs during startup, when opening Diskeeper, or when another program launches.
  • The folder containing the executable.
  • Any second DLL named in the message.

Also check whether Diskeeper remains listed in Installed apps. If Diskeeper was removed but Windows still shows a startup error, an old startup entry or scheduled task may be trying to load its files.

To inspect startup applications:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Diskeeper or an unfamiliar entry that points to an old Diskeeper folder.
  4. Disable the entry only if you are certain it belongs to the removed program.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not delete random registry entries just because their names look unfamiliar.

Fix 5: Install a runtime only when the error names it

dkres.dll itself does not prove that a particular Microsoft runtime is missing. Do not install every Visual C++ package as a guess.

If the full error specifically names a dependency such as msvcp120.dll or msvcr120.dll, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable download.

Choose the architecture required by the calling application. The x86 and x64 packages can coexist. After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Diskeeper again.
  3. If the error remains, reinstall Diskeeper rather than copying individual runtime files.

If the message names a different runtime, use the Microsoft package corresponding to that dependency and the application’s documentation. Do not treat a generic “module not found” message as proof that Visual C++ is the cause.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption

SFC and DISM normally will not recreate dkres.dll because it is not a protected Windows system file. Use these commands when Windows has other corruption symptoms or the error points to a Windows dependency.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. SFC checks and repairs protected Windows files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible SFC results include:

  • did not find any integrity violations: no protected Windows corruption was found.
  • found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test Diskeeper.
  • found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: restart, run DISM again if necessary, and review the complete message.

If Diskeeper still reports a missing dkres.dll, reinstall Diskeeper. These commands are not a substitute for the application installer.

Running the same commands repeatedly without knowing what changed is not a repair strategy. If you want a guided scan that identifies system issues instead of manually comparing command output, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair actions require the full version; reinstalling Diskeeper remains the definitive fix for this application file.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers

A driver is not normally the source of dkres.dll, but a damaged storage driver, filter driver, or disk utility component can cause broader application failures.

  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

To inspect devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and System devices.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click a relevant device and select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

Do not uninstall a storage controller or disk device unless you have a recovery plan and know which driver Windows requires. If the error began after a driver change, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If manually checking each manufacturer’s driver page is taking too long, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation requires the full version; it is not required, and reinstalling Diskeeper is still the correct fix for a missing dkres.dll.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem started immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, software removal, or other system change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the list.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Select Finish.

System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It is not a replacement for backing up important data.

After Windows restarts, test Diskeeper. If the error remains, reinstall the program from a known-good installer.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL installation command. Microsoft documents it for self-registering OLE and ActiveX libraries that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point.

Running this command against an ordinary application library can produce an error stating that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It does not restore missing dependencies, repair a damaged Diskeeper installation, or make an x86 DLL compatible with an x64 application.

Do not run:

regsvr32 dkres.dll

unless the specific Diskeeper documentation tells you that this file is self-registering and must be registered. For the normal missing-file error, repair or reinstall Diskeeper instead.

Do not copy dkres.dll into System32 or SysWOW64

Copying the file into a Windows directory can create several problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows may continue loading the wrong copy.
  • The application may require a matching dependency beside the original file.
  • An x86 and x64 mismatch may remain.
  • The DLL may belong to a different Diskeeper release.
  • You may conceal a damaged or compromised installation.
  • Future repairs and uninstallers may no longer know which file is active.

Keep application DLLs with the application that installed them. The correct location is determined by the Diskeeper installer, not by the filename.

What to do if reinstalling does not work

Work through this checklist:

  1. Verify the error is produced by Diskeeper and not another executable.
  2. Confirm the Diskeeper edition and product generation.
  3. Use the matching x86 or x64 installer.
  4. Check Protection history for quarantine events.
  5. Look for a second missing dependency in the complete message.
  6. Remove remnants of an incomplete installation only through the official uninstaller or vendor instructions.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall from the original installer or contact Condusiv support.
  9. Scan the computer if the file appeared in an unexpected location.
  10. Back up personal data and check disk health if files are repeatedly disappearing or becoming corrupt.

Do not use the newest-looking DLL as a replacement. Public file inventories show that dkres.dll has appeared in substantially different older and newer Diskeeper builds, so version and architecture matching matter.

Frequently asked questions

Is dkres.dll part of Windows?

No. It is associated with Diskeeper (TM) Disk Defragmenter, a third-party application.

Should I download dkres.dll separately?

No. Random DLL downloads may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible product version. They also leave the damaged Diskeeper installation and its dependencies unresolved. Use the original installer or Condusiv support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put it in System32?

No. Do not use System32 or SysWOW64 as a first-line fix. Let the correct Diskeeper installer place its files.

Does SFC restore dkres.dll?

Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally supply proprietary Diskeeper application files.

Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?

Only if the complete error identifies a missing Visual C++ dependency or Diskeeper documentation requires it. The presence of dkres.dll alone is not enough evidence.

Is the file definitely safe because Diskeeper uses it?

No. Check its location, provenance, signature, parent executable, and antivirus report. A legitimate filename can be copied or renamed by malware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error appear after Diskeeper was uninstalled?

A startup entry, scheduled task, service, or another retained component may still reference the old installation. Identify the executable in the error and disable only the confirmed obsolete entry.

What is the definitive repair?

Repair or reinstall the same Diskeeper edition and architecture from a trusted installer. If the old installer is unavailable, contact Condusiv Technologies support.
