kxasio.dll is the kX ASIO Driver component, not a Windows system file. If Windows or an audio program says kxasio.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the complete kX Audio Driver package rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
The kX Project provides ASIO support for compatible Creative and E-mu sound cards, including Sound Blaster Live., Audigy, and Audigy2 families. The driver is intended for specific older hardware, so a missing file can indicate a damaged installation, an architecture mismatch, broken ASIO registration, antivirus quarantine, or hardware that the package cannot use correctly.
Before you begin
Close the application showing the error, along with music software, recording tools, media players, and digital audio workstations.
You should also note:
- The name of the affected application
- Whether that application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the computer has a compatible Creative or E-mu sound card
- Whether the error began after removing, updating, or cleaning a driver
- Whether Windows Security or another antivirus program recently quarantined a file
Do not copy kxasio.dll into C:WindowsSystem32. A random DLL can have the wrong architecture, dependencies, registration data, or a malicious modification.

Fix 1: Confirm that the kX driver belongs on this computer
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
kxasio.dll normally appears because the kX Audio Driver package is installed or an audio application is configured to use the kX ASIO Driver. First confirm that this is the software your computer actually needs.
Check the installed programs
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for kX, kX Project, or kX Audio Driver.
- If an entry appears, note its name and installation date.
- If the entry is missing, continue to the official kX Project package repair steps below.
You can also check Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for a kX-related driver or audio package.
Check the audio hardware
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a Creative, E-mu, or kX-related device.
- Double-click the device and open the General tab.
- Read the message in Device status.
If the computer has no compatible Creative or E-mu hardware, reinstalling the kX driver may not produce a usable audio device. An audio program that requests kxasio.dll without a legitimate kX installation should be treated cautiously.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete kX Audio Driver package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged kxasio.dll.
Use the official kX Project binaries repository and choose the complete Windows package appropriate for the computer. The repository provides packages for x86 and x64 Windows systems, including packages named kxdrv3552-full.zip and kxdrv3553-full-unsigned.exe. Package contents and compatibility can differ, so follow the documentation included with the package instead of replacing individual files.

If the kX driver is listed in Installed apps, uninstall it before reinstalling:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the kX Audio Driver.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows when asked.
If the uninstaller is unavailable, use the original kX setup program if you still have it. Avoid deleting individual DLLs or registry entries manually because partial cleanup can leave stale ASIO registrations.
Install the official package
- Download the complete driver package from the official kX Project binaries repository.
- Extract the archive if Windows downloaded a ZIP file.
- Right-click the setup program.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Accept only the driver components required for the compatible audio hardware.
- Allow Windows to install the driver if security prompts appear.
- Restart the computer after installation finishes.
Do not interrupt the installer by moving kxasio.dll to another folder. The installer places the native and, where applicable, 32-bit components in the locations expected by the driver and ASIO host.
Check the result
After restarting:
- Open the audio program that showed the error.
- Open its Preferences, Settings, or Audio page.
- Find the ASIO driver, Audio device, or Driver type menu.
- Select kX ASIO Driver.
- Apply the change.
- Close and reopen the program.
The repair worked if the application opens without the missing-file message and can see the kX audio device. If the driver appears in the menu but selecting it produces a new error, continue with the architecture and registration checks.
For driver versions, package files, and compatibility information, rely on the official kX Project repositories. Do not replace the installed DLL with a similarly named file from another kX build.
Fix 3: Match the application and driver architecture
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit ASIO component, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit component. This is especially important on 64-bit Windows because many audio applications remain 32-bit.

Identify the application architecture
Windows does not always display the architecture clearly in its shortcut. You can check the program installation folder:
- 32-bit applications are commonly installed under
C:Program Files (x86). - 64-bit applications are commonly installed under
C:Program Files.
This is a useful indication, but the application’s own documentation or About screen is more reliable.
You can also check a running program:
- Start the audio application.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform if that option is available.
- Check whether the program is listed as 32-bit or 64-bit.
Repair the matching installation
The safest approach is to reinstall the complete official kX package rather than copying one architecture of kxasio.dll over another.
On 64-bit Windows, a working setup may need both:
- The native 64-bit kX ASIO component for 64-bit hosts
- The 32-bit kX ASIO component for 32-bit hosts
If one application works and another reports that kxasio.dll cannot load, the problem may be limited to the second application’s architecture or ASIO registration.
Check the application’s ASIO selection
Some programs retain an old device selection after a driver is removed.
- Open the application’s audio settings.
- Change the driver type temporarily to another available option.
- Apply the setting.
- Restart the application.
- Select kX ASIO Driver again.
- Apply the setting and restart once more.
If the kX driver is not listed at all, reinstall the package before trying manual registration.
Fix 4: Repair ASIO registration with regsvr32
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Most ordinary DLL files should not be registered manually. kxasio.dll is an exception because the kX setup source explicitly registers its native and 32-bit ASIO components.
Reinstalling the kX package is still preferred. Use manual registration only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from a known-good kX installation.
- The file exists in the kX installation directory.
- The correct architecture matches the application.
- The application still cannot see or load the ASIO driver.
Register the file
- Open File Explorer.
- Locate the installed
kxasio.dll. - Right-click it and select Copy as path if available.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run a command using the actual path, for example:
regsvr32 "C:Program FileskX Projectkxasio.dll"
- Read the result dialog.
- Restart the audio application.
The path above is an example, not a guaranteed installation location. Confirm the real path on your computer before running the command.
Register both architectures on 64-bit Windows
Windows includes separate registration tools:
- The native 64-bit tool is normally in
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe. - The 32-bit tool is normally in
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe.
The folder names can be confusing: SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit tool on 64-bit Windows.

For a 32-bit kX DLL, use the 32-bit registration tool:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathto32-bitkxasio.dll"
For a 64-bit kX DLL, use the native tool:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "C:pathto64-bitkxasio.dll"
Do not register a file simply because its name matches. Registering the wrong architecture can produce errors such as “The module failed to load” or “The specified module could not be found.”
A successful registration message does not prove that the audio hardware is compatible. Reopen the ASIO host and test the device afterward.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a driver component after an installation or cleanup operation. The message may then say that kxasio.dll is missing even though the rest of the kX package remains installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
kxasio.dll, the kX installer, or the kX installation folder. - Open the detection details.
Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from the official kX installation and the security product identifies the detection as a false positive. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to accept an unknown DLL.
If the file was quarantined and its origin is uncertain, reinstall the complete official package instead. This gives you a cleaner installation than restoring a potentially damaged file.
After restoring or reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the audio application.
- Select kX ASIO Driver again.
- Test playback or recording.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it isolated and contact the security product vendor or use a different supported driver. Repeated detections should not be ignored.
Fix 6: Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that kxasio.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the DLL.
First confirm that kxasio.dll exists in the kX installation directory. If it exists, reinstall the complete kX package rather than downloading unrelated runtime files.
Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is the cause. Install or repair those components only when the application’s documentation or a specific dependency error identifies one of them.

You can also check whether the error occurs only in one application:
- Open another ASIO-compatible audio program.
- Select kX ASIO Driver.
- Test the device.
- Compare the result.
If only one application fails, its saved audio configuration, plug-ins, or architecture may be responsible. Reset that application’s audio settings or reinstall the application according to its publisher’s instructions.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 7: Update or reinstall the audio driver through Device Manager
Time needed: 15–25 minutes
Device Manager can identify driver problems, but it may not provide the complete kX package or its ASIO registration. Use it to inspect the device and remove an obviously broken driver, then use the official kX installer for the full repair.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the Creative, E-mu, or kX device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver status.
- Select Uninstall Device only if you are ready to reinstall the complete driver package.
- If shown, enable Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official kX installer as administrator.
- Restart again.
If Device Manager shows a yellow warning icon, open Properties and record the device status code. A hardware or compatibility problem may remain even after kxasio.dll is restored.
Manually searching Windows Update is unlikely to provide the complete kX ASIO setup for older hardware. Use the official kX package that matches the device and operating system.
If manually checking multiple driver packages and architecture details is becoming difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver installations; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair or driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and the official kX package remains the appropriate source for this specific driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 8: Repair wider Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15–45 minutes, plus restart time
Use DISM and System File Checker when Windows has broader problems, such as several missing system files, failed Windows features, unexplained crashes, or damaged built-in applications. These commands normally repair protected Windows components, not third-party kX driver files.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the audio application again.
Do not close the window while either command is running. If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully and SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If SFC says it found no integrity violations, Windows system files are probably not the cause of the kX error.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader PC problems and show what it finds, while repair requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the kX driver.
Fix 9: Recheck the ASIO host after a reboot
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A stale ASIO selection can remain after an uninstall, upgrade, or partial cleanup.
Recommended Free Tools
- Restart Windows after completing the repair.
- Open the affected audio application.
- Open its audio or device settings.
- Select kX ASIO Driver.
- Choose the correct input and output device.
- Apply the settings.
- Close and reopen the application.
- Play a short test sound or record a short test signal.
If the application still reports that the file cannot load, check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit and repeat the matching installation and registration steps. If several old kX entries appear, remove the incomplete installation and reinstall one complete package rather than trying to register every copy.
Why kxasio.dll errors happen
The most likely causes, in practical order, are:
| Cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged kX installation | The file or related components were removed or corrupted | Reinstall the complete official package |
| 32-bit/64-bit mismatch | The application cannot load the installed DLL architecture | Install and register the matching component |
| Broken ASIO registration | The file exists but the host cannot discover it | Reinstall first, then use matched regsvr32 if necessary |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the component | Verify provenance and reinstall if uncertain |
| Incompatible hardware | The computer does not use supported Creative/E-mu hardware | Confirm the device before continuing |
| Partial uninstall | Old files or registry entries remain | Remove the old package and perform one clean reinstall |
| Missing dependency | A required supporting module cannot load | Reinstall the package and investigate the specific dependency |
| Windows corruption | Broader operating system files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Unrelated or malicious software | An unexpected program is requesting the file | Scan the system and identify the requesting process |
The kX documentation is historical and focuses on older Windows releases. It does not establish universal compatibility with current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations. If the hardware is unsupported or the driver cannot operate correctly on the current system, reinstalling kxasio.dll will not solve the underlying problem.

What not to do
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Do not download
kxasio.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy the file into
System32orSysWOW64by hand. - Do not replace it with a file from another kX build.
- Do not use
regsvr32on every DLL that produces an error. - Do not disable antivirus protection to accept an unknown file.
- Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence of a related dependency problem.
- Do not assume that a successful registration proves that the audio hardware is supported.
- Do not use Windows system repair commands as a substitute for reinstalling the kX driver.
The safest source is the official kX Project driver package and its included documentation. If the official package cannot support the installed hardware or current Windows environment, stop rather than forcing an unrelated DLL into the system.
Frequently asked questions
Is kxasio.dll part of Windows?
No. kxasio.dll is the kX ASIO Driver component from the kX Audio Driver project. It is not a Microsoft runtime or normal Windows system DLL.
What program installed kxasio.dll?
The kX Audio Driver package installs it. An ASIO-aware audio application may request it when configured to use kX ASIO Driver, but the application does not necessarily own the file.
Can I download only kxasio.dll?
You should not. An isolated download may have the wrong architecture, dependencies, registration data, or build. Repair the complete kX package from the official kX Project source.
Should I put kxasio.dll in System32?
No. The kX installer uses its own installation paths and ASIO registration. Manual copying can create conflicts and does not repair the driver installation.
Does regsvr32 apply to this DLL?
Yes, in this specific case. The kX installer registers the native and 32-bit ASIO components. Reinstall the package first, then use the architecture-matched regsvr32 command only when the known-good file is present but registration is broken.
Why does “The specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of kxasio.dll, or the application may be trying to load the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. Reinstall the complete package and verify the host architecture.
Will DISM or SFC restore kxasio.dll?
Normally no. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful for wider Windows corruption, but a missing kX driver file requires repair or reinstallation of the kX package.
What if only one audio program fails?
Check that program’s ASIO settings, architecture, plug-ins, and saved device configuration. Re-select kX ASIO Driver, restart the program, and reinstall the matching kX package if the driver is absent.
What if the error appears in a game or ordinary application?
That is not a normal kX ASIO use case unless the program includes or intentionally uses an audio component configured for kX. Scan the system, inspect the program’s installation source, and avoid supplying a random DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
