“The program can’t start because dlaa3werr.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “dlaa3werr.dll was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “the specified module could not be found.”
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- You have a Lexmark printer or multifunction device: reinstall its exact Lexmark printer software and scanning package.
- The error started after antivirus detection: check Protection history and quarantine, then reinstall the Lexmark package.
- The file exists but still will not load: check the file path, application architecture, and missing dependencies.
- Several Windows components are failing: run DISM, then System File Checker.
- You do not own or recognize any Lexmark hardware: do not restore the file. Verify its location and scan the computer first.
- You were considering
regsvr32or copying the DLL into System32: stop. Those are usually the wrong repairs for this file.
What dlaa3werr.dll is
dlaa3werr.dll is associated with Lexmark International’s WIA Error Handler, part of a Lexmark Windows Image Acquisition driver stack. WIA is the Windows framework used by imaging devices such as scanners and multifunction printers. Microsoft describes WIA drivers and their error handling in its WIA documentation.

The exact Lexmark model cannot be identified from the filename alone. Different printer packages can place similar components in different folders, and public file records disagree about architecture and file details. Treat the installed Lexmark device and its driver package as the source of truth.

- SMALL: Compact printer fits almost anywhere (8. 7 x 14. 5 x 14. 3 inches / 222 x 368 x 363 millimeter).
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Lexmark printer and scanner package
This is the most likely and safest repair.
Lexmark’s printer software can install print, scan, and fax drivers together. A print-only package or generic Windows printer driver may allow printing while leaving the WIA scanning components missing.
Remove the old Lexmark software
- Disconnect the Lexmark printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Uninstall Lexmark printer software, scanning utilities, and device-specific packages related to the affected printer.
- Restart Windows.
If the Lexmark entry is not listed:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove obsolete Lexmark programs from Programs and Features.
- Restart the computer.
Do not manually delete files from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository. DriverStore packages are managed and signed by Windows, and deleting individual files can create a second driver problem.
Download and install the correct package
- Identify the exact Lexmark model from the printer label or the old Windows device entry.
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page.
- Enter the model number.
- Select your installed Windows version.
- Select the correct system architecture when offered.
- Download the Recommended Driver or the complete device-specific Driver Package.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose repair or reinstall if the installer provides that option.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Test the repair by opening the Lexmark scanning application or Windows Scan and completing a preview or scan. If scanning works without the error, the WIA component has been restored.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through device entries and guessing which driver package is stale; its free scan shows detected driver problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact Lexmark package remains the definitive fix for this Lexmark-specific DLL.
Do not substitute a universal print driver automatically
A universal print driver may restore printing but not scanning. If the error concerns a scanner, use the Lexmark package listed for the exact model and confirm that scanning software or WIA support is included.
Fix 2: Check the file path and antivirus quarantine
A legitimate copy should normally be inside a Windows driver or installed-program location associated with Lexmark. A copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, a browser cache, or a random user-writable application directory deserves suspicion.
Check the path reported by the error
- Press Windows + E.
- Search the affected drive for
dlaa3werr.dll. - Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Check whether the surrounding folder belongs to an installed Lexmark package.
Do not replace the file simply because the filename matches. A file can be corrupt, the wrong architecture, unsigned, or dependent on other missing files.

Check Windows Security
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a recent action involving the Lexmark driver or
dlaa3werr.dll. - If the file was quarantined, verify its location and signature before restoring it.
- Prefer reinstalling the Lexmark driver after restoring or allowing a legitimate detection.
If you have never installed Lexmark software, do not restore the file based only on its name. Run a full Windows Security scan and investigate which application is requesting it.
Fix 3: Match the driver and application architecture
Public records for this file disagree about whether particular copies are 32-bit or 64-bit. That is why downloading a copy based on a database listing is unsafe.
The correct architecture depends on the Lexmark package and the program loading it, not on a generic DLL listing. A 32-bit scanning utility may use components under C:WindowsSysWOW64, while 64-bit components commonly use C:WindowsSystem32. Those folder names are counterintuitive: SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
Do not move the file between these folders. Instead:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm whether Windows is 64-bit by opening Settings → System → About.
- Check whether the Lexmark scanning application is 32-bit or 64-bit through its installation folder or application properties.
- Download the matching package from Lexmark for the device and Windows version.
- Remove the old Lexmark package before reinstalling if the installer detects conflicting versions.
- Restart and test scanning.
If the message says “the specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Replacing only dlaa3werr.dll will not correct that dependency chain.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair commands when other Windows features are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the problem began after broader system corruption. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not necessarily restore a third-party Lexmark DLL that was removed from its driver package.

- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Lexmark scanner again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance. Microsoft also documents repairing a Windows image.
If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to the Lexmark driver reinstall. A clean SFC result does not prove that a third-party driver package is complete.

Fix 5: Install pending updates, then reinstall Lexmark
A failed Windows or driver update can leave an incomplete device installation.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not insist.
- Reinstall the exact Lexmark driver package.
- Test both printing and scanning.
Do not assume Windows Update provides the newest complete Lexmark scanning software. The device-specific Lexmark package may contain components that a generic update does not.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 reference. A WIA driver component is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL.

regsvr32 dlaa3werr.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32dlaa3werr.dll
Use regsvr32 only if a specific Lexmark installer or Microsoft procedure explicitly instructs you to register that component. Otherwise, repair the complete driver package.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
Do not download a loose copy of dlaa3werr.dll and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the Lexmark folder. That approach can install:
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An incompatible version
- A file with missing dependencies
- An unsigned replacement that the driver will not trust
It also leaves the installer, registry entries, WIA configuration, and related Lexmark files unrepaired. The safe source is the official Lexmark driver package for the exact printer or multifunction device.

Collect the details before trying another replacement file:
- Note when the error appears: startup, scanning, printing, or launching a Lexmark utility.
- Record the exact printer model.
- Copy the full path shown for
dlaa3werr.dll. - Check Windows Security → Protection history again.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the failing program.
- Check the Lexmark installer log if the package reports an installation failure.
- Confirm that old Lexmark packages were removed.
- Reinstall the driver once more using the device-specific package and administrator permissions.
If no Lexmark hardware is installed, treat the reference as potentially misidentified or suspicious. Scan the system, inspect the calling application, and avoid restoring a DLL merely because an error message names it.
System Restore is a final fallback when the problem began recently and a restore point predates it:
Best Value
- Open Control Panel.
- Search for Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
FAQ
Is dlaa3werr.dll a Windows file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a standard Windows component. Public file records associate it with Lexmark’s WIA driver software.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Reinstalling those runtimes is not the primary repair for this filename.
Which Lexmark model installed it?
The filename alone does not establish a specific model. Identify the device and install the package listed for that model.
Can I copy it from another computer?
Do not. The other computer may have a different architecture, version, dependency set, or device package.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency required by the DLL may be missing, or the file may be incompatible with the application. Reinstall the complete Lexmark package instead of replacing one file.
Will SFC fix it?
Only if the problem involves protected Windows components. SFC does not reliably restore a missing third-party Lexmark driver file.
What is the safest fix?
Remove the damaged or obsolete Lexmark software, download the device-specific package from Lexmark, reinstall it, restart Windows, and test scanning.
