Windows may show messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dlimgfl8.dll is missing from your computer.”

dlimgfl8.dll is usually a WIA image-processing component installed with a scanner, printer, camera, or multifunction-device driver. The safest fix is to identify the device that owns the file and reinstall its complete official driver package, rather than downloading the DLL separately.

- Reconnect the scanner or multifunction device and restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager and identify the imaging device.
- Update or reinstall its driver through Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history for quarantine activity.

- Do not copy

Microsoft describes Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) as the framework that allows scanners and other imaging devices to communicate with Windows applications. WIA image-processing filters are driver-specific DLL components normally installed with a WIA driver, not standalone runtime files (Microsoft’s WIA documentation).

WIA includes Windows services, but the vendor driver supplies behavior specific to the hardware. That means this DLL may be delivered inside the package for a particular scanner, printer, camera, or multifunction device. It should not be treated as a universal Windows file that can be replaced with any copy bearing the same name.

The file is best understood as a hardware-driver component:
- It is not a Visual C++ runtime.
- It is not a DirectX component.
- It is not a .NET assembly.
- It is not normally repaired by installing unrelated application runtimes.
- Its exact architecture, version, size, hash, and installation path depend on the driver package.
A missing-file error can also indicate that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. In that situation, restoring a file with the correct name alone may not solve the error.
Which device installed the file?
There is no verified universal vendor for every copy of dlimgfl8.dll. The application showing the error is an important clue, but the underlying owner is usually the connected imaging device or its driver package.
The error may have started after:
- Removing a scanner or printer
- Updating Windows
- Reinstalling or rolling back a device driver
- Running disk cleanup
- Replacing a multifunction device
- An antivirus quarantine event
- Repairing or removing a vendor scanning utility
- Installing a driver for the wrong Windows architecture
If only one vendor utility fails, that utility may also have a damaged application component. If Windows Scan works but the manufacturer’s utility does not, repair or reinstall the vendor utility after repairing the device driver.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the device driver
This is the most likely fix for dlimgfl8.dll.
Identify the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the scanner, printer, camera, or multifunction device connected when the error appears.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
Also check the General tab for a device status message. A warning icon or error code confirms that the hardware installation needs attention.
To record more identifying information:
- In the device’s Properties, open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
- Copy the displayed values into a text file.
The model name and hardware IDs help distinguish between similar devices and driver generations.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any driver Windows finds.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the scanning application and test a preview or scan.
Microsoft provides the same general procedure in its guide to updating drivers through Device Manager.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, check Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates. Not every device driver appears there, so the manufacturer’s official support page may still be necessary.

Reinstall the complete package
Use the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact device model and Windows edition. Download the full scanner or multifunction-device installer, not an isolated DLL.
Then:
- Disconnect the device if the installer requests it.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove the manufacturer’s scanner software if it is listed and clearly associated with the device.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the downloaded driver installer as administrator.
- Reconnect the device when prompted.
- Restart again and test the application.
If you already have a trusted INF driver package, Microsoft’s PnPUtil can add and install it:
pnputil /add-driver "C:PathTodriver.inf" /install
Replace the path with the actual INF file. This command installs a driver package; it is not a method for installing a loose DLL. Microsoft documents the command in its PnPUtil syntax reference.
Manually finding the correct model, architecture, and driver generation can take time, especially when several devices are listed. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s official package remains the preferred source for a device-specific WIA component.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a driver component. Do not restore the file automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
dlimgfl8.dll, the scanner utility, or the device driver. - Open an entry to inspect its location and detection details.
Restore a quarantined item only when you can establish that it came from a trusted Microsoft or hardware-manufacturer driver package. Microsoft warns that restoring an unsafe file can expose the computer; its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If the source is unclear, leave the item quarantined and reinstall the signed driver package from the official source instead. Run a full Windows Security scan if the file appeared in an unexpected location or the problem began after installing unknown software.

Use this step when Windows reports broader corruption, several system components are failing, or the error began after a failed update or upgrade. It may not restore a vendor-supplied DLL because SFC primarily checks protected Windows files.
Run DISM first
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart and test the scanner.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If DISM cannot find repair files, Microsoft documents using a valid matching Windows installation source with a command such as:

Replace the example path with a suitable repair source.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the scanner driver is intact. dlimgfl8.dll may belong to a third-party driver package outside protected Windows-file servicing. Return to the device-driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether the file is a Windows component or a vendor component adds little value. Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Do not choose a replacement based only on the filename. Public records for this obscure DLL disagree about architecture and historical versions, so there is no single verified copy that fits every Windows installation.

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the scanning application.
- Use its documentation or installation folder details to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Confirm that the driver package supports your Windows architecture and device model.
A 32-bit application may depend on a 32-bit component even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit application requires compatible 64-bit components. A mismatched DLL can produce a load error, an application crash, or a message that incorrectly appears to blame only the named file.
The correct solution is to install the driver generation recommended for the device and Windows edition. Do not copy a file from another computer, from System32, or from SysWOW64 simply because its name matches.
Fix 5: Repair the application named in the error
If the error appears only when launching a particular scanner utility:

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the utility from the device manufacturer.
Repair the device driver first when the application is a scanner utility. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET unless the error separately identifies one of those components.
Does regsvr32 fix dlimgfl8.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. WIA image-processing filters are installed and registered as part of the driver’s INF package. A missing or damaged filter should therefore be repaired through the complete driver installation.
Running this command is not a general fix:
regsvr32 dlimgfl8.dll
It can produce another error if the DLL is not meant to be registered that way, and it does not restore missing dependencies or the rest of the driver package. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference explains its purpose. Use it only when the hardware manufacturer’s documented installer specifically requires it.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Do not download dlimgfl8.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into an application folder or Windows directory. That approach can fail because the downloaded file may have:
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible driver version
- Missing dependencies
- An unknown signature or provenance
- Malware or unwanted modifications
It can also hide the actual damaged DriverStore or application installation. The safe sources are Windows Update, Device Manager, the device manufacturer’s official support channel, and a trusted driver package supplied by your organization’s administrator.

When to use System Restore
Use System Restore when the failure began immediately after a known driver installation, Windows change, or application change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore reverts system state, settings, and some installed programs. It does not replace a manufacturer’s need to provide a compatible current driver. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
Use Windows repair or reset only after confirming that the failure is not limited to one device driver or scanning application. A full Windows repair is disproportionate when reinstalling the exact WIA package resolves the error.

Is dlimgfl8.dll a Windows system file?
It is associated with the Windows WIA driver stack, but this exact DLL may be supplied inside a device-specific vendor driver package. Do not assume that every copy belongs in a Windows system directory.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this filename alone. Install those components only if a separate error identifies them as missing or damaged.
Can SFC restore the file?

The vendor utility may have a separate damaged interface or application component. Repair or reinstall that utility, while keeping the device driver installed.
What if I removed the scanner?
Reconnect it, restart Windows, check for driver updates, and reinstall the correct package. If the device is permanently gone, uninstall its old software and identify which remaining application is still requesting the DLL.
Is it safe to restore the DLL from quarantine?
Only when its original location, signature, and source are trusted. Otherwise reinstall the complete official driver instead of restoring an isolated file.
