DLSS 4.5 does not make generated frames equivalent to traditionally rendered frames. Its more important change is flexibility: the second-generation Super Resolution model is available across RTX generations, while Dynamic Multi Frame Generation can vary its multiplier instead of forcing RTX 50-series owners to use an aggressive setting constantly.
That makes Frame Generation more attractive in demanding, GPU-limited games—particularly ray-traced and path-traced titles on 144Hz, 240Hz, or faster VRR displays—but it remains a poor substitute for a strong base frame rate and low input latency.

|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 20 | Yes, in supported titles | No | No |
| RTX 30 | Yes, in supported titles | No | No |
| RTX 40 | Yes | Yes | No |
| RTX 50 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Availability still depends on the game, driver, NVIDIA App version, and whether the developer has implemented the relevant feature. NVIDIA says the Super Resolution model is available in more than 400 games and applications through native support or supported NVIDIA App overrides.

What DLSS 4.5 actually changes
Second-generation Transformer Super Resolution
DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input using motion data, depth information, and an AI model. DLSS 4.5 keeps that basic approach but introduces a second-generation Transformer model intended to improve temporal stability, anti-aliasing, fine detail, motion handling, and the interpretation of lighting and scenes.
The benefit is most relevant when the internal resolution is low. Performance and Ultra Performance modes give the reconstruction model less source information to work with, so improvements in foliage, thin geometry, reflections, and moving detail can be more visible there than in Quality mode.
It is not a free upgrade. Independent testing by ComputerBase found an average performance cost of roughly 4–5% on some RTX 40- and 50-series cards, with substantially larger losses on RTX 30-series hardware in certain games. Tom’s Guide similarly found that the largest visible gains tended to appear in Performance and Ultra Performance modes; at Quality or Balanced, the improvement could be too small to justify the lost performance.
An updated Frame Generation model
NVIDIA also introduced an updated Frame Generation model for supported RTX 40- and 50-series games. It is designed to handle interface elements, overlays, and text-like content more cleanly when the game supplies the necessary information.
This does not guarantee perfect HUDs, subtitles, menus, or crosshairs. Native developer integration can provide better engine data than an App override, and fast camera movement, particles, transparency, disocclusion, and animated interfaces can still produce artifacts.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation
Earlier Multi Frame Generation settings used a fixed multiplier. Dynamic MFG is intended to change that multiplier during gameplay. It can use fewer generated frames in difficult or latency-sensitive scenes and more when the rendered frame rate and pacing provide enough headroom.
NVIDIA compares the behavior to an automatic transmission. The idea is not simply to select the largest possible number, but to make the output better fit the scene, the underlying render rate, and a high-refresh display.
This is the main reason DLSS 4.5 changes the Frame Generation calculation. A fixed 6X mode can be excessive when the base frame rate is unstable. Dynamic MFG offers a more practical compromise between smoothness, GPU workload, image quality, and responsiveness.
What 5X and 6X mean
The multiplier describes the output sequence, not six fully rendered frames:
Traditional rendering: R1 ─ R2 ─ R3
4X MFG: R1 G1 G2 G3 ─ R2 G4 G5 G6
6X MFG: R1 G1 G2 G3 G4 G5 ─ R2
R represents a traditionally rendered frame and G represents an AI-generated frame. In 6X mode, five generated frames appear for each traditionally rendered frame. The display may receive six images in the interval between rendered frames, but the GPU is not producing six independent game states.

Native rendering determines the underlying simulation and input response. Frame Generation increases displayed frame frequency. Those are related, but they are not the same measure of performance.
DLSS 4.5 versus DLSS 4
| Feature | DLSS 4 | DLSS 4.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Super Resolution | First-generation Transformer model in newer presets | Second-generation Transformer model |
| RTX 20/30/40/50 Super Resolution | Yes, where supported | Yes, with availability varying by game or app |
| Multi Frame Generation | Earlier supported multiplier | Adds Dynamic MFG and 5X/6X modes |
| Dynamic multiplier | No equivalent feature | Yes |
| RTX 50 requirement for MFG | Yes | Yes |
| UI-aware Frame Generation improvements | Implementation-dependent | Improved in selected supported games |
| Reflex | Recommended with Frame Generation | Still essential for controlling latency |
“DLSS 4.5” can therefore refer to different model and feature updates depending on the game. A title may support the new Super Resolution model without supporting Dynamic MFG, or support a newer Frame Generation model without receiving every other DLSS 4.5 component.
Why Frame Generation feels more tempting now
It addresses the fixed-multiplier problem
Frame Generation has always had a central limitation: generated images can make camera movement look smoother without increasing the rate at which the game simulation responds to input.
If a game is rendering at 45–60 real frames per second, additional frames may improve visual fluidity, but the controls are still governed largely by the underlying rendered frames. A high displayed FPS number cannot erase a slow simulation, uneven frame pacing, or a queue full of work waiting to be rendered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDynamic MFG is more appealing because it does not insist on the most aggressive interpolation in every scene. That matters in games with large differences between open areas, combat, cutscenes, menus, and heavily ray-traced interiors.
It makes high-refresh displays more useful
Demanding path-traced games can be difficult to run at the native frame rates needed to exploit a 240Hz monitor. On an RTX 50-series card, 5X or 6X MFG can increase displayed frame frequency enough to make high-refresh motion more apparent, provided the underlying rendered frame rate is stable and the game is visually suitable.
The display remains a limit. A 6X mode has little practical value on a 60Hz monitor, and a 144Hz display cannot show every frame produced above its refresh ceiling. VRR can help, but it does not turn generated frames into additional input samples.
It can improve the underlying image as well
The second-generation Super Resolution model may reduce shimmer, ghosting, and unstable fine detail, especially in lower-resolution modes. That makes Frame Generation easier to appreciate because the generated frames are being inserted into a more stable image sequence.

However, independent comparisons remain mixed. TechSpot found improvements varied by game and mode, while Tom’s Guide’s testing found that the newer model was not automatically the best choice at every setting.
Rendered FPS, displayed FPS, and latency
These three measurements answer different questions:
- Rendered FPS: how many frames the game and GPU conventionally produce.
- Displayed FPS: rendered frames plus generated intermediate frames.
- Input latency: how long it takes for an input to affect a newly rendered game state and appear on screen.
Frame Generation can raise displayed FPS without raising rendered FPS by the same amount. Generated frames predict motion between traditionally rendered frames; they do not replace the game’s simulation.

Latency depends on the base rendered frame rate, GPU utilization, Reflex behavior, multiplier, display refresh rate, frame pacing, VRR, V-Sync, and the game engine’s input pipeline. NVIDIA says DLSS 4.5 MFG is designed to work with Reflex, which helps control the render queue and limit the responsiveness penalty. Reflex does not make generated frames equivalent to native frames for input response.
There is no universal latency number or universal minimum base FPS that makes Frame Generation appropriate. A slow single-player adventure, a racing game, and a competitive shooter place very different demands on responsiveness. Test the game you actually play.
Which RTX GPUs benefit?
RTX 20 and RTX 30
These cards can use DLSS Super Resolution and DLAA in supported games, including the new Super Resolution model where the integration or NVIDIA App override supports it. They do not get the RTX 40/50 implementation of Frame Generation or any Multi Frame Generation mode.
On RTX 30, test carefully. The newer model’s render-time cost can be disproportionately high in some workloads, so a higher-quality input mode using the older model may be preferable to a lower-resolution mode using DLSS 4.5.
RTX 40
RTX 40 owners can use DLSS Super Resolution and standard single-frame Frame Generation in supported games, along with the updated Frame Generation model where available. They do not receive Dynamic MFG, 5X, or 6X MFG.
That still makes DLSS 4.5 relevant to RTX 40 owners. The upgrade is about the newer reconstruction and Frame Generation models, not only Blackwell’s Multi Frame Generation features.
RTX 50
RTX 50-series cards support the full DLSS 4.5 feature set where the game and software support it: second-generation Super Resolution, standard Frame Generation, Dynamic MFG, and fixed 5X/6X modes.
That does not mean every RTX 50 card is equally suitable for 6X. Native rendering performance, VRAM, power limits, resolution, and frame-time consistency still matter. A lower-tier card can display a large generated-FPS number while delivering weaker real performance and less responsive controls than a faster card using a lower multiplier.
How to enable DLSS 4.5
Using a native game setting
- Update the game and your NVIDIA driver.
- Open the game’s graphics settings.
- Enable DLSS Super Resolution and choose a mode such as Quality, Balanced, Performance, or Ultra Performance.
- If supported, select Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.
- Enable NVIDIA Reflex when the game offers it.
- Change one setting at a time and compare motion, frame pacing, artifacts, and responsiveness.
Using NVIDIA App overrides
- Install or update the NVIDIA App.
- Open Graphics and select the game.
- Find the DLSS override controls.
- Choose the newest available Super Resolution model or the recommended preset.
- Launch the game and confirm DLSS is still enabled in the game’s own graphics menu.
- Compare the override with the previous model at the same resolution, DLSS mode, sharpness, and Frame Generation state.
An override cannot add DLSS to a game that lacks the necessary supported integration. Labels and availability can vary with the App version, driver, and title. NVIDIA documents the supported override process here.

| System or player | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|
| RTX 20/30, GPU-limited | DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution if its render-time cost is acceptable |
| RTX 40, single-player games | Standard Frame Generation plus Reflex |
| RTX 50, variable GPU load | Dynamic MFG plus Reflex |
| RTX 50, 240Hz display and demanding path tracing | Test 5X or 6X MFG |
| Competitive shooter | Usually avoid aggressive MFG and prioritize native responsiveness |
| CPU-limited game | Do not expect MFG to solve the bottleneck |
| 60Hz monitor | Little reason to prioritize 6X |
Use DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution when
- The game is GPU-limited.
- You are using Performance or Ultra Performance mode.
- The newer model visibly improves motion stability or fine detail.
- The performance and power costs are acceptable.
- You have compared moving scenes rather than still screenshots.
Keep the older model or use a higher-quality mode when
- DLSS Quality already looks good.
- The newer model lowers frame rate without a visible improvement.
- A known game-specific artifact becomes worse.
- You are on RTX 30 and the performance cost is unusually high.
- Native rendering or DLAA is affordable.
Choose Dynamic MFG over fixed 6X when
You want smoother motion in demanding single-player games but do not want maximum interpolation in every scene. Dynamic MFG is the sensible first setting for RTX 50 owners with a high-refresh VRR display and variable GPU workloads.

How to test it properly
Do not judge DLSS 4.5 from a single screenshot or the largest FPS counter. Use the same:

- DLSS mode and sharpness.
- Driver and game version.
- Frame-generation state.
- Camera route or repeatable scene.
Inspect both still images and motion. Check foliage, hair, thin wires, fences, water, reflections, particles, transparency, subtitles, crosshairs, HUD elements, rapid camera turns, and objects appearing from behind geometry.
Record the base rendered FPS and 1% lows separately from displayed FPS. If the game is CPU-limited, unstable, or already feels sluggish before Frame Generation, a larger multiplier may make the counter look better without improving the experience.
Common failure cases
- Low base FPS: generated frames can smooth movement while controls remain slow or uneven.
- CPU bottlenecks: MFG does not fix simulation, draw-call, or world-update limits.
- Rapid motion: camera cuts, fast turns, particles, and disocclusion can expose synthesis errors.
- UI artifacts: improved handling is game-dependent, not a guarantee that every overlay is perfect.
- Display limits: high multipliers are wasted if the panel cannot display the output.
- Power draw: a newer model may use more GPU power. PC Gamer reported a test-specific increase of nearly 50 watts in one Cyberpunk 2077 Ultra Performance comparison on an RTX 5090; this is not a universal penalty.
- Laptop differences: power limits, thermals, resolution, and Optimus or MUX behavior can materially change results compared with desktop cards.
What about Ray Reconstruction?
Ray Reconstruction should be treated as a separate DLSS 4.5 update, not as an automatic consequence of enabling the new Super Resolution model or MFG. NVIDIA has discussed a newer denoising model intended to improve ray-traced and path-traced image quality, but rollout and availability can vary independently by game and integration.
A game supporting one DLSS 4.5 component does not necessarily support every other component.

Only if you specifically want Dynamic MFG, 5X/6X output, or the broader performance advantages of RTX 50-series hardware. DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution alone is not an RTX 50-exclusive reason to upgrade: RTX 20, 30, and 40 owners can use it where supported.
When comparing cards, consider native raster and ray-tracing performance, VRAM, power draw, price, game support, and your target resolution before generated FPS. NVIDIA’s launch MSRPs included $549 for the RTX 5070 and $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti, but those are historical launch figures, not current August 2026 retail prices.
For most buyers, the feature’s value depends on the workload:
- RTX 50-series high-refresh 1440p: Dynamic MFG can be compelling when native performance is already healthy.
- RTX 50-series 4K path tracing: 5X or 6X may help exploit a 240Hz-class display, but only after checking base FPS, VRAM, artifacts, and latency.
- RTX 40 owners: the newer Super Resolution and Frame Generation models may be worthwhile, but buying a new GPU solely for 5X/6X is a separate value decision.
- RTX 20/30 owners: test the new Super Resolution model, but do not expect Multi Frame Generation.
Verdict
DLSS 4.5 is a meaningful software update, but its value is uneven. The second-generation Super Resolution model can improve difficult low-resolution modes, though it costs performance on some GPUs and is not visibly better in every game. RTX 40 owners gain access to updated reconstruction and Frame Generation behavior, but not Multi Frame Generation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The genuinely new reason to take Frame Generation more seriously is Dynamic MFG. It makes the technology less of an all-or-nothing choice for RTX 50 owners by adapting the output multiplier to the scene. Fixed 6X remains an enthusiast option for high-refresh, GPU-bound, slower-paced games—not a universal setting and certainly not six times the native rendering performance.
Start with a strong base frame rate, enable Reflex, use VRR, compare motion rather than screenshots, and judge the result by latency and image stability as well as the displayed FPS counter.
