DLSS vs FSR in 2026: Which GPU Upscaling Tech Delivers Better FPS and Image Quality?

DLSS 4.5 is the overall image-quality and feature leader in 2026, while FSR remains highly competitive for compatibility and AMD hardware. Here is how to choose between them for FPS, frame generation, latency and GPU purchases.

DLSS is still the overall winner for image quality, temporal stability, feature depth, and frame-generation maturity in 2026. AMD’s FSR is no longer merely a lower-quality alternative, however. FSR 3.1 remains valuable on a wide range of hardware, while FSR Upscaling 4.1—also discussed as FSR 4 or FSR Redstone—substantially narrows the quality gap on supported Radeon RX 9000 GPUs.

The practical answer depends on what you mean by “better.” DLSS generally produces the cleanest moving image in supported games. FSR has the broader hardware philosophy. Neither guarantees the highest conventionally rendered FPS in every game, and frame generation must be judged separately from upscaling.

The short answer

  • Best overall image quality: DLSS 4.5, especially its newer transformer-based models.
  • Best feature stack: DLSS, particularly on newer GeForce RTX hardware with Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and Reflex.
  • Best compatibility: FSR, especially older and broadly integrated FSR versions such as FSR 3.1.
  • Best AMD-specific quality option: FSR Upscaling 4.1 on supported Radeon RX 9000 hardware.
  • Highest normal rendered FPS: No universal winner. Results depend on the GPU, engine, resolution, ray tracing, CPU limits, and implementation quality.
  • Highest apparent FPS with generation: DLSS has the stronger high-end feature story, but generated frames do not provide the same responsiveness as conventionally rendered frames.
  • Best buying advice: Do not choose a GPU based on the upscaler name alone. Compare native performance, ray tracing, VRAM, price, game support, latency, and your actual game library.

Nvidia’s current materials identify DLSS 4.5 as its latest DLSS feature generation, while AMD’s 2026 documentation describes FSR Redstone SDK 2.2 as including FSR Upscaling 4.1, FSR Frame Generation 4.0.0, FSR Ray Regeneration 1.1.0, and preview Radiance Caching. See Nvidia’s DLSS developer documentation, Nvidia’s DLSS overview, and AMD’s FSR Redstone documentation.

DLSS and FSR are families of technologies, not single features

“DLSS versus FSR” is now an incomplete comparison unless the feature and version are specified. A game may offer several separate technologies under the same menu:

  • Frame generation: DLSS Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation versus FSR Frame Generation.
  • Ray-tracing reconstruction: DLSS Ray Reconstruction versus FSR Ray Regeneration.
  • Native-resolution anti-aliasing: DLAA uses DLSS technology at native resolution but does not increase performance.

Older comparisons between DLSS 2 or 3 and FSR 2 or 3.1 do not automatically describe DLSS 4.5 versus FSR Upscaling 4.1. The generation, model, preset, driver override, and game integration all matter.

What DLSS Super Resolution does

DLSS Super Resolution renders a game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution output using temporal information, motion vectors, depth data, and Nvidia’s trained models. The result can preserve more detail than a simple spatial upscale while reducing the GPU work required for the final image.

DLSS 4.5’s newer transformer-based model is intended to improve stability, lighting detail, and motion detail. It is still important to distinguish this from other DLSS features: Frame Generation creates intermediate frames, Multi Frame Generation creates more than one generated frame in compatible configurations, Ray Reconstruction replaces some ray-traced denoising work, and DLAA applies DLSS-style reconstruction at native resolution for anti-aliasing.

What FSR does

FSR is AMD’s broader family of reconstruction and frame-generation technologies. FSR 1 was a spatial upscaler. FSR 2 introduced temporal reconstruction. FSR 3 and 3.1 added frame-generation capabilities alongside temporal upscaling. FSR Upscaling 4.1 is AMD’s newer machine-learning-based upscaler for supported Radeon RX 9000 hardware.

FSR Frame Generation is separate from FSR Upscaling. A game can use one without the other, and support for FSR 3.1 does not imply support for FSR Upscaling 4.1. AMD lists the versions and hardware requirements in its FSR overview and FidelityFX documentation.

Image quality: DLSS 4.5 generally leads, but not in every game

DLSS 4.5 is the safer choice when your priority is a stable moving image. Its advantage is most visible in difficult temporal scenes such as foliage, hair, wires, railings, particles, reflections, thin geometry, and objects appearing from behind foreground surfaces.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface

Independent testing generally supports that conclusion. TechSpot found that DLSS 4.5’s newer model usually improved disocclusion artifacts, ghosting, and foliage quality compared with earlier DLSS versions, while also observing regressions in some cases and a performance cost that can be more noticeable on older GPUs. ComputerBase’s comparison of DLSS 4.5, DLSS 4, DLSS 3, FSR Upscaling AI/FSR 4, and FSR 3.1 found that the newer DLSS 4/4.5 and FSR AI generations were materially better than the older DLSS 3 and FSR 3.1 implementations. A related blind test reported by Tom’s Hardware collected 6,747 votes across six games; DLSS 4.5 received 48.2% of all votes, and FSR 4 did not win any of the six titles. That is useful evidence of viewer preference, not a universal laboratory measurement: game selection, video presentation, display, settings, and voters affect the result.

FSR Upscaling 4.1 should not be dismissed as old FSR. AMD claims improvements to ghosting, particle preservation, detail, and temporal stability. Those are manufacturer claims, and the actual result remains game-dependent. A well-integrated FSR implementation can look better than a poorly integrated DLSS implementation, and excessive sharpening can make either technology appear noisier rather than clearer.

What to inspect during gameplay

Static screenshots are an incomplete test. Pause the comparison and then move the camera or character while checking:

  • Foliage, grass, hair, fur, wires, and fences.
  • Reflections, water, shadows, particles, smoke, and transparency.
  • Distant signs and fine geometry.
  • Objects entering or leaving the frame.
  • Ghost trails behind moving characters or vehicles.
  • Shimmering during camera pans.
  • HUD elements, text, and UI stability.

“Sharper” is not automatically “better.” A heavily sharpened image may show more edge contrast while also revealing aliasing, noise, and temporal breakup.

FPS: there is no universal DLSS or FSR winner

Upscaling normally increases performance by reducing internal render resolution, but the overhead of reconstruction differs between implementations and GPU architectures. A game may run faster with FSR, faster with DLSS, or nearly identically with both. CPU limits, simulation, asset streaming, ray tracing, and the engine’s own reconstruction cost can dominate the result.

Keep these measurements separate:

Measurement What it tells you
Native FPS Performance with no upscaler or frame generation.
Upscaled FPS Conventionally rendered performance using DLSS or FSR.
Generated FPS The displayed frame rate after interpolation or multi-frame generation.
1% lows Whether demanding moments remain smooth.
Frame-time consistency Whether motion feels even rather than merely producing a high average.
Latency How quickly input affects the displayed result.

A fair comparison uses the same game build, driver, graphics preset, ray-tracing settings, output resolution, sharpening, motion blur, and CPU conditions. Test Quality, Balanced, and Performance separately, disable frame generation for the upscaling comparison, and then test frame generation as a second experiment.

Upscaling may provide little benefit when the CPU is limiting performance, when the game is already running at very high FPS, or when simulation and streaming are the bottlenecks. AMD’s published FSR performance examples demonstrate what the company achieved in selected games on an RX 9070 XT; they should not be treated as universal results.

Upscaling is not frame generation

Upscaling

  • Reduces the internal rendering resolution.
  • Reconstructs a higher-resolution image.
  • Usually improves performance when the GPU is the bottleneck.
  • Still requires the game to conventionally render each displayed gameplay frame.
  • Directly affects image quality.

Frame generation

  • Creates intermediate frames between conventionally rendered frames.
  • Raises the displayed FPS counter.
  • Does not proportionally increase game simulation or input sampling.
  • Can introduce ghosting, UI artifacts, warped geometry, and uneven pacing.
  • Works best when the base rendered FPS is already reasonably high.

A game rendering 35 real FPS may show a much higher number with frame generation, but it will not necessarily feel as responsive as a game rendering 60 or 80 real FPS. Treat frame generation primarily as a smoothness feature, not as a substitute for adequate base performance.

DLSS versus FSR frame generation

DLSS has the stronger high-end frame-generation ecosystem. Nvidia’s newer GeForce cards support increasingly advanced generation modes, and Reflex can help manage latency in compatible games. Multi Frame Generation is a separate feature from ordinary DLSS Frame Generation and is not available on every RTX generation.

FSR Frame Generation’s main advantage is its wider hardware philosophy. It is especially useful on Radeon cards and on systems where DLSS is unavailable. AMD also says some FSR 3.1 integrations can receive automatic upscaling updates through Adrenalin, although this must be confirmed for the individual game.

Compare like with like: DLSS Super Resolution against FSR Upscaling, DLSS Frame Generation against FSR Frame Generation, and DLSS Multi Frame Generation against the closest available AMD mode. Comparing DLSS Multi Frame Generation with ordinary FSR upscaling would conflate different features.

Hardware compatibility in 2026

Hardware Best starting point Important qualification
GeForce RTX 50 series DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution; test supported generation modes. Feature availability varies by game and model.
GeForce RTX 40 series DLSS Super Resolution and supported DLSS Frame Generation. Multi Frame Generation is a separate feature.
GeForce RTX 20/30 series DLSS Super Resolution where supported; compare FSR if DLSS looks poor. Newer DLSS models may cost more performance on older GPUs.
Radeon RX 9000 series FSR Upscaling 4.1/Redstone where supported. Requires compatible hardware and game integration.
Radeon RX 7000/6000 series FSR 3.1 or the newest supported non-AI FSR option. Do not assume FSR Upscaling 4.1 support.
Older Radeon, GeForce, or Intel GPUs FSR 2/3 where supported; compare XeSS or TSR. Quality depends heavily on the game’s implementation.

This is a practical starting point, not a substitute for the game’s support list. ComputerBase reported DLSS 4.5 operating on an RTX 3090 Ti while FSR Upscaling AI did not operate on an RX 6950 XT in its test. That example demonstrates why “FSR 4 versus DLSS 4.5” is not always a same-generation comparison.

Legacy FSR has broader hardware reach, but that does not mean every FSR feature works on every GPU. Conversely, DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution support should not be confused with support for Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.

Recommended settings by resolution and game type

Use case Starting setting
1080p Native or Quality. Avoid Performance unless necessary because internal-resolution loss is more obvious.
1440p Quality or Balanced.
4K Quality, Balanced, or Performance depending on the GPU and game.
Ultrawide or high-refresh 4K Start with Quality, then try Balanced if the base GPU load remains too high.
Competitive shooters Native or Quality upscaling; usually disable frame generation while prioritizing latency.
Heavy ray tracing Quality upscaling first. Add frame generation only after establishing stable base FPS.

These presets are starting points, not performance measurements. “Quality” in DLSS and “Quality” in FSR generally target a similar output class, but exact internal resolution and implementation can differ by title. Verify the game’s behavior rather than assuming the labels produce identical pixels.

Latency and competitive play

Upscaling can reduce GPU-limited latency by increasing conventionally rendered FPS. Frame generation can increase displayed FPS without increasing the number of game-simulated frames, so a high counter does not guarantee lower input latency.

For competitive games, begin with native rendering or Quality upscaling and frame generation disabled. Use Reflex or an equivalent latency-management feature where available, and evaluate actual input response rather than relying on the FPS counter. For single-player games, frame generation can be worthwhile when the base FPS is stable and the resulting artifacts are acceptable.

When to choose DLSS, FSR, native rendering, or another upscaler

Choose DLSS when:

  • You own an RTX GPU and the game supports a current DLSS model.
  • Image stability, foliage, fine detail, and ray-traced image quality matter most.
  • You want access to Nvidia’s broader feature stack, including Reflex and supported generation modes.
  • The available FSR implementation shows distracting ghosting, shimmer, or breakup.

Choose FSR when:

  • You own a Radeon or non-RTX GPU.
  • The game does not support DLSS.
  • You value broad hardware compatibility.
  • The game’s DLSS implementation is poorly integrated.
  • FSR Upscaling 4.1 is available and looks good on your supported RX 9000 card.
  • A stable FSR 3.1 implementation provides the performance you need.

Choose native rendering or DLAA when:

  • Your GPU already meets the target FPS.
  • You play at 1080p and reduced internal resolution is obvious.
  • Reconstruction artifacts are distracting.
  • You value maximum detail over additional performance.
  • The system is CPU-limited, making upscaling ineffective.

Also test Intel XeSS or Unreal Engine’s TSR when available. A strong alternative can be preferable to both DLSS and FSR in a particular game, especially when one integration has poor motion vectors, reactive masks, UI handling, or sharpening.

Should DLSS or FSR decide your GPU purchase?

Only as part of the decision. DLSS can justify choosing GeForce for a player who regularly uses ray tracing, values image stability, wants Nvidia’s current generation features, or plays many titles with excellent DLSS support. Radeon is compelling for players who prioritize raster performance, broader FSR compatibility, and access to FSR Upscaling 4.1 on supported RX 9000 hardware.

Do not pay a large premium solely for an upscaler advantage without checking your games. Compare:

  • Native raster performance at your target resolution.
  • Ray-tracing performance.
  • VRAM capacity and memory bandwidth.
  • Actual support in your preferred games.
  • Base FPS before frame generation.
  • Latency requirements.
  • Power consumption, warranty, regional availability, and current street price.

Prices and availability change by region and publication date. Check current official product information for GeForce RTX cards, RTX 50-series hardware, Radeon graphics, and Radeon RX 9000-series cards rather than relying on old launch pricing.

Final verdict

DLSS 4.5 is the best general-purpose choice for image quality and feature depth in 2026, while FSR remains the more open and broadly useful technology. FSR 4.1 is a meaningful improvement on supported Radeon RX 9000 hardware, but it does not erase the importance of game integration or make every older Radeon card compatible.

For an existing RTX owner, start with DLSS Super Resolution and test the available model and preset in motion. For an AMD owner, use the newest FSR version the game and GPU actually support. For buyers, compare the complete GPU rather than treating DLSS or FSR as a standalone reason to purchase. The right choice is the one that delivers sufficient real FPS, acceptable latency, stable frame times, and an image you can enjoy in the games you actually play.
