The dmbackup.dll error usually appears when SanDisk SecureAccess cannot open its encrypted vault. The file is not a Windows component, so downloading it into System32 is unlikely to solve the problem and can put the vault at risk.

The exact errors you may see

Common messages include:

  • “The dynamic link library dmBackup.dll could not be found in the specified path.”
  • “dmbackup.dll is missing.”
  • “dmbackup.dll was not found.”
  • “The procedure entry point dmAPP_isUnlockedVIDPID could not be located in the dynamic link library dmBackup.dll.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because dmBackup.dll was not found.”

The error commonly appears when starting RunSanDiskSecureAccess-Win.exe. Newer SecureAccess releases used SanDiskSecureAccessV3_win.exe.

The 60-second answer

dmBackup.dll belongs to SanDisk SecureAccess, the discontinued software that created encrypted private vaults on some SanDisk USB flash drives. It is normally associated with the drive’s My Vaults directory, not C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Do this first:

  1. Stop writing to the SanDisk drive.
  2. Do not format it or delete My Vaults.
  3. Open the USB drive in File Explorer and check whether the SecureAccess executable, My Vaults, and dmBackup.dll are present.
  4. Copy all visible files to another disk before attempting repairs.
  5. If the error is an entry-point error, restore the complete matching SecureAccess folder rather than replacing one DLL.
  6. If SecureAccess opens, immediately copy the decrypted vault contents to a normal, non-encrypted folder.

SanDisk no longer supports SecureAccess or provides a current official download for the legacy software. The safe long-term path is to recover the vault and migrate the contents to a supported product.

What dmbackup.dll is

dmBackup.dll is an application DLL associated with SanDisk SecureAccess. SecureAccess encrypted and password-protected files stored on compatible SanDisk USB flash drives.

It is not identified as:

  • A Windows system file
  • A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
  • A DirectX component
  • A .NET component
  • A standard USB driver
  • A file that should be installed in System32 or SysWOW64

Some third-party file records describe 32-bit samples with placeholder version 0.0.0.0, but those records do not establish which SecureAccess release created a particular file. They are not a safe source for downloading a replacement.

What the error usually means

Error type Likely cause Correct response
DLL missing or not found File deletion, quarantine, damaged vault structure, or incorrect path Preserve the drive and restore the complete SecureAccess structure
Entry point not found The executable and DLL come from different SecureAccess releases Replace the complete matching program folder, not only the DLL
File appears present but will not load Corruption, wrong architecture, dependency failure, or read-only drive Copy or image the drive before further attempts
Error began after an interrupted vault operation Incomplete write or filesystem damage Stop writing and prioritize recovery
Error began after antivirus detection The DLL may have been quarantined Inspect quarantine and scan the complete drive

Fix 1: Preserve and inspect the SanDisk drive

This is the safest first fix because repeated launches and repair utilities can make a damaged flash drive worse.

  1. Close SecureAccess and any File Explorer window currently copying files.
  2. Do not delete My Vaults, .backup.dm, settings folders, or encrypted vault files.
  3. Reconnect the SanDisk drive directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
  4. Press Windows + E.
  5. Select This PC and open the SanDisk drive.
  6. Look for:
  7. dmBackup.dll
  8. RunSanDiskSecureAccess-Win.exe
  9. SanDiskSecureAccessV3_win.exe
  10. My Vaults
  11. Other SecureAccess data and settings folders
  12. Copy the entire visible drive contents to another physical disk.

If Windows reports that the drive is read-only, asks you to format it, repeatedly disconnects it, or reports errors while copying, cancel the operation. Do not format the drive. Make a sector-level image or contact a data-recovery service if the vault is important.

A file remaining visible does not prove that the encrypted vault is healthy. Flash-memory and filesystem damage can allow directory browsing while preventing files from being read correctly.

Fix 2: Restore the complete SecureAccess folder

If dmBackup.dll is absent, the program folder may be incomplete. SecureAccess depends on a group of files and directories, not just this one DLL.

Use this order:

  1. Find the original SanDisk drive or a known-good backup of it.
  2. Compare the complete SecureAccess folder with the damaged copy.
  3. Restore the complete folder to the SanDisk drive or to a separate working copy.
  4. Keep the executable and dmBackup.dll from the same source and release.
  5. Double-click the SecureAccess executable from that restored location.
  6. Enter the vault password when prompted.

Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless it came from the same original SecureAccess installation and the rest of the program files match. Do not overwrite the only copy of the vault while experimenting. Work from a copy whenever possible.

If the vault opens, create a normal folder on another disk and copy the decrypted files there. Open several files from the backup to confirm that the copy is readable before changing or removing anything on the USB drive.

Fix 3: Repair an entry-point mismatch

The message mentioning dmAPP_isUnlockedVIDPID is different from a simple missing-file error. It means Windows found a DLL, but the executable requested a function that the loaded DLL does not provide.

Rank #2
SANDISK 64GB Ultra, USB-A Flash Drive, Up to 130MB/s Read Speeds - 2 Pack
  • Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); up to 130MB/s read speed; USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
  • Backward compatible with USB 2.0
  • Secure file encryption and password protection(2)

This usually indicates that files from different SecureAccess releases have been mixed. Common ways this happens include copying only dmBackup.dll, restoring an old executable over a newer folder, or combining files from separate SanDisk drives.

To correct it:

  1. Close SecureAccess.
  2. On another disk, create a backup of the complete current SecureAccess folder.
  3. Obtain the complete folder from the original SanDisk installation or a known-good backup.
  4. Restore the executable, DLLs, vault-related folders, and supporting files together.
  5. Launch the executable from that restored folder.
  6. If the entry-point message remains, stop mixing files and preserve the drive for recovery.

Replacing only dmBackup.dll cannot reliably correct an entry-point mismatch. The function must exist in the version of the DLL expected by that executable.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine an old encryption component or a packed application file. Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL from the internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and type Windows Security.
  2. Select Windows Security.
  3. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review detections involving dmBackup.dll, SecureAccess, or the SanDisk drive.
  6. Confirm the detected path and detection details.
  7. Scan the complete USB drive before restoring anything.
  8. Restore the file only if it came from your original trusted SanDisk installation and the complete drive is otherwise safe.

If the file was quarantined from an unknown download, do not restore it. A restored malicious file can expose the computer and the encrypted data.

Fix 5: Check whether Windows is loading the wrong path

A missing-file message can sometimes mean the executable is searching a different directory from the one you inspected.

  1. Open File Explorer and note the drive letter assigned to the SanDisk device.
  2. Search the drive for dmBackup.dll.
  3. Search for both RunSanDiskSecureAccess-Win.exe and SanDiskSecureAccessV3_win.exe.
  4. Launch the executable from the same SecureAccess folder that contains its supporting files.
  5. Do not move the executable by itself to the desktop.
  6. Do not add the SanDisk folder permanently to the Windows system PATH as a workaround.

If the DLL exists under My Vaults but the program still reports it missing, the folder structure may be damaged or the executable may be using an incompatible release. Restore the complete installation instead of changing global Windows directories.

Fix 6: Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The available file records identify reported dmBackup.dll samples as 32-bit, but they do not prove that every SecureAccess release used identical binaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit application normally loads 32-bit dependencies. A 64-bit replacement is not a solution and may produce another loading error. Windows can run many 32-bit applications on 64-bit editions through its compatibility layer, but the application’s own files still need to match.

Check the executable rather than guessing:

  1. Right-click the SecureAccess executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab if available.
  4. Compare it with the original installation or backup.
  5. Keep the executable and DLLs from one complete installation.

Do not use the system architecture as a reason to download a 64-bit DLL.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is failing

Because dmbackup.dll is not a Windows system file, SFC and DISM will not recreate it. Use them only if other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or built-in applications show unrelated corruption.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish, then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test SecureAccess from the original or restored folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents DISM image repair and SFC troubleshooting. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but SecureAccess still fails, focus on the USB drive and matching application files.

SFC and DISM can take time and may leave you guessing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows component problems and show what needs repair; its full repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling SecureAccess remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 8: Check drivers only for broader USB problems

A USB driver is not the likely owner of dmbackup.dll, but a broader device problem can cause disconnects, read-only behavior, or failed copying.

To inspect the device:

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message under the General tab.
  7. Use Driver only to view the installed driver or roll back a recently changed driver.
  8. Do not uninstall storage devices while the vault is the only remaining copy.

Reconnect the drive to another USB port and, if possible, another computer. If the same read-only or disconnect behavior follows the drive, treat it as a storage failure rather than a Windows DLL problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually checking multiple hardware pages and driver versions is slow and can lead to the wrong update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show the detected issue; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it will not repair a damaged SecureAccess vault.

Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL

regsvr32 registers COM DLLs that provide registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.

Running this:

regsvr32 dmBackup.dll

will not rebuild the SecureAccess folder or fix a version mismatch. It may simply report that the entry point is missing. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes registration, not arbitrary application dependency repair.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe here

Do not download dmbackup.dll from a generic DLL repository and copy it into:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The SecureAccess folder
  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

A downloaded file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different SecureAccess release, or fail because another dependency or vault directory is damaged. It may also overwrite the only useful evidence on the drive.

  • Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); up to 130MB/s read speed; USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
  • Backward compatible with USB 2.0
  • Secure file encryption and password protection(2)

The safe sources are the original SanDisk installation, a verified backup made from that installation, and current SanDisk support guidance. SanDisk’s current guidance is to back up vault contents before migration, not to install an isolated legacy DLL.

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop using repair utilities and preserve the drive when:

  • The USB drive becomes read-only.
  • Files disappear after reconnecting.
  • Copy operations fail or freeze.
  • Windows repeatedly asks to format the drive.
  • The drive disconnects during access.
  • The vault is the only copy of important data.
  • SecureAccess opens once but the contents cannot be copied reliably.

At that point, make a forensic image or seek professional data recovery. Do not run filesystem repair tools against the original drive before creating an image if preserving encrypted data matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After recovery: migrate away from SecureAccess

If SecureAccess opens:

  1. Open the vault.
  2. Copy its contents to a separate, non-encrypted folder.
  3. Open representative files from that backup.
  4. Confirm the backup is complete and readable.
  5. Only then install a supported replacement product.
  6. Create a new vault and copy the recovered files into it.

Do not delete the old vault until the backup has been checked. The current SANDISK App does not directly open a SecureAccess vault, so migration requires recovering the files first.

FAQ

Is dmbackup.dll part of Windows?

No evidence identifies it as a Windows, .NET, DirectX, Visual C++, or standard driver file. It is associated with SanDisk SecureAccess.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. SecureAccess expects its own application and vault layout. System32 and SysWOW64 are not safe locations for this file.

Will installing Visual C++ fix it?

Usually not. The most likely issue is an incomplete, mismatched, quarantined, or damaged SecureAccess installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore dmbackup.dll?

No. SFC checks protected Windows files. It does not recreate a third-party SecureAccess DLL.

Can I format the SanDisk drive?

Not if the vault contains data you need. Formatting can destroy the only copy of the encrypted files.

What if the vault opens once?

Immediately copy the decrypted contents to another disk and verify that the files open. Do not postpone the backup.

Is the entry-point error the same as a missing-DLL error?

No. An entry-point error usually means Windows loaded a DLL that does not match the executable. Restore the complete matching SecureAccess folder.
