What nlslexicons0046.dll is and the safest fix

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

nlslexicons0046.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows natural-language component, not a normal Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, graphics-driver, or game-runtime file. If nlslexicons0046.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is associated with Windows National Language Support and language-processing data. Microsoft identifies NlsLexicons files with the Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6 Windows component. The filename is often encountered when an older application requests a Windows component that is missing, damaged, incompatible, or unavailable on the current Windows release.

The exact file is most strongly associated with older Windows versions, including Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. Its absence from a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation does not automatically mean Windows is broken. The application requesting it may itself be obsolete or incompatible.

Do not download nlslexicons0046.dll from a random DLL website. An unofficial copy can have the wrong architecture, version, language data, or malware, and copying it into System32 often leaves the underlying Windows servicing problem untouched.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus a restart

This is the best first repair when the error appears during Windows startup, after an update, after changing language settings, or in more than one application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source.

Run the commands

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install pending updates by opening Settings > Windows Update, selecting Check for updates, and installing the available updates.
  4. Test the application again.

Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker.

Understand the result

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with the application and compatibility checks below.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means Windows repaired files. Restart and test again.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the component store or repair source may also be damaged. Run DISM again, restart, and rerun SFC.
  • If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use the matching installation-source procedure below.

The manual process requires keeping track of which repair command changed the result and reading logs when it does not. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention, while its repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the direct repair path.

Fix 2: Repair the application that reports the error

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

If only one older program or game displays the message, the program may be requesting an obsolete Windows component or may have an incomplete installation. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not justified unless the actual error names one of those runtimes.

Use Windows app repair options

For a Microsoft Store application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three dots beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available. Resetting may remove the application’s local settings.

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the program.
  3. Select its three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Uninstall, or select the application’s own Repair option if one is offered.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Reinstall the program using the developer’s original installer.
  7. Apply the program’s latest update.
  8. Start it once using right-click > Run as administrator to test whether permissions are involved.

If the program is an old game or utility, check its documented Windows compatibility requirements. Do not copy the DLL into the program folder unless the application’s developer specifically distributes it as part of that application. The evidence for this filename identifies it as Windows natural-language component data, not standard game middleware.

Test compatibility settings

  1. Right-click the application’s shortcut or executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose the Windows version recommended by the application’s developer.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Launch the program.

If the error affects only that application while Windows features work normally, an application compatibility problem is more likely than a missing system file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Antivirus software can quarantine a Windows file after detecting corruption, unauthorized replacement, or a false positive. Check quarantine before attempting any manual replacement.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open an entry related to nlslexicons0046.dll, if present.
  6. Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
  7. Restore it only when the security product identifies it as a Microsoft Windows file, the detection is a verified false positive, and a full scan is clean.
  8. If the file was modified or infected, leave it quarantined and run DISM followed by SFC instead.
  9. Select Scan options > Full scan and start the scan.

If a copy exists outside normal Windows directories, such as inside a temporary folder or an unfamiliar application directory, treat it as potentially unauthorized. Do not move it into System32.

Fix 4: Check the file location and architecture

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Protected Windows files are normally serviced through the component store. Depending on the Windows release, architecture, language installation, and servicing state, related files may be exposed in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
C:WindowsWinSxS

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The names are confusing, but a 32-bit program normally uses the 32-bit system environment, while a 64-bit program requires native 64-bit components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s older file tables list nlslexicons0046.dll with examples including:

Architecture Version Reported size
x86 6.0.6000.16386 1,808,896 bytes
x64 6.0.6000.16386 1,808,896 bytes

Other Windows-family servicing data contains later version families. These values are identification information, not a reason to download a matching file from an unofficial source. The 0046 suffix follows Windows’ hexadecimal locale-identifier naming convention, but the filename alone does not prove which language is installed or active.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > About.
  3. Read System type.
  4. Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
  5. Check whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation or installation directory.

Never substitute an x86 file for an x64 file, or copy a file from another Windows release. A copied file can have incompatible dependencies, language resources, or servicing metadata.

Fix 5: Repair from matching Windows installation media

Time needed: 30 to 90 minutes

Use this when DISM reports that it cannot find source files and SFC still cannot repair the component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX /LimitAccess

Replace X: with the installation media drive letter. The INDEX must correspond to the installed Windows edition. Do not guess it. The source must match the installed Windows build, edition, language, and architecture.

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and check for updates.

If the computer cannot start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment. Drive letters can change there, so identify the Windows partition before running offline commands. A typical procedure is:

SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Replace D: with the drive letter that actually contains the Windows folder. Microsoft describes this process in its WinRE startup repair guidance.

Fix 6: Update Windows and inspect language settings

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

An interrupted update or language-pack change can leave Windows servicing incomplete.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install all available updates.
  4. Restart when requested.
  5. Return to Windows Update and check again.
  6. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  7. Review installed languages and language features.
  8. Remove only a language pack you know is no longer needed.
  9. Restart and test the affected application.

Do not delete other NlsLexicons*.dll files because their names look similar. They may belong to different locale data or Windows components.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

Time needed: 1 minute

Do not run:

regsvr32 nlslexicons0046.dll

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the COM self-registration entry point DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that nlslexicons0046.dll is a self-registering COM server. It is Windows language component data, so registration will not restore it and may produce a message such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.”

Microsoft explains the purpose of regsvr32 and DLL self-registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Update a driver only when the evidence points there

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A display, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal owner of this file. Use Device Manager only when the error began with a hardware change, the affected program crashes during graphics or storage access, or Device Manager shows a separate warning.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver, when available.

Driver maintenance involves identifying the exact hardware, architecture, and compatible release rather than installing a random package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while the full version handles driver installation; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing the Windows component or reinstalling the affected application.

What causes the error

The most likely causes are:

Situation More likely explanation Appropriate response
Several programs or Windows features fail Damaged Windows component or servicing store Run DISM, then SFC
The error began after an update Incomplete Windows servicing Finish Windows Update and repair Windows
One old application fails Compatibility problem or incomplete installation Repair or reinstall the application
The file appears in antivirus history Quarantine or unauthorized replacement Scan, then repair Windows
“Specified module could not be found” appears The named file or one of its dependencies is unavailable Repair Windows and investigate the application
A current Windows system lacks the file The application may expect an obsolete component Verify application compatibility before replacing anything

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL alone is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

When to use System Restore or repair installation

Use System Restore when the problem began recently and an appropriate restore point exists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs and proceed.

If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and application repair all fail, use an in-place Windows repair installation with matching official installation media. Back up important files first. A clean installation should be the last resort.

FAQ

Is nlslexicons0046.dll a virus?

The filename itself is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component name. A copy in an unexpected directory, with an invalid signature or associated with an unknown executable, may be a masquerade. Scan it and repair Windows rather than trusting the filename.

Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No verified evidence identifies it as belonging to those runtimes. Install one of them only when the error specifically names a file from that runtime.

Should I download the DLL manually?

No. There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download for this file. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, matching installation media, or the original application installer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer need this file?

No. The exact filename is primarily documented in older Windows-family releases. A modern application requesting it may be incompatible or may be incorrectly expecting an older Windows component.

What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?

Run DISM, restart, and run SFC again. If DISM cannot find source files, use matching installation media and inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Do not replace the file with a download.

Is reinstalling the game enough?

Only if the game actually ships or references this component. If multiple Windows features fail, repair Windows first. If only one old game fails after Windows repair, reinstall or update that game from its original developer.
