DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition is the 2015 PS4 and Xbox One re-release of Ninja Theory’s 2013 reboot, expanded with released DLC and new ways to tune its combat. Reviews are generally favorable, especially on the strength of the action and added challenge, but the edition’s visual improvements were not universally considered transformative. It is best viewed as a more complete, configurable version for players open to this take on Devil May Cry.

What is different in the Definitive Edition?

Ninja Theory described the edition as including the base game and all released DLC, alongside new options intended to change how the game plays. Its announcement also named two additional character skins: Devil May Cry 1 Dante and Classic Vergil. The package includes:

  • Vergil’s Downfall, plus three Dante skins, three Dante weapon skins, and the item finder.
  • Manual Target Lock, with configurable controls for players who prefer more direct control over targeting.
  • Turbo Mode, which Ninja Theory said makes the game run 20% faster.
  • Hardcore Mode, which adjusts balance and makes earning high rankings harder.
  • Must Style, where attacks do not damage enemies until the player reaches an S rank or higher.
  • Gods Must Die, an added high-challenge mode.
  • Vergil’s Bloody Palace, a 60-level mode announced by the developer.

Ninja Theory’s Product Development Ninja Dominic Matthews said, “We’ve taken on-board player feedback and implemented many of the most requested features.” That is the developer’s description of its design approach, not evidence that every player request was met. Ninja Theory’s announcement describes the package and its features.

What do the reviews say?

Metacritic’s page, accessed in 2026, shows an 83/100 Metascore based on 53 critic reviews: 50 positive, three mixed, and none negative. Its separate user score is 7.3/10 from 756 ratings, labeled “Mixed or Average.” These figures reflect different groups and sample sizes; the critic and user scores should not be treated as one combined verdict. Both may change as the page’s counts update. Metacritic’s review page includes the aggregate and cited review excerpts.

Combat and replay value

Critic excerpts praise the action, the new challenge options, and the added or retuned combat elements. Manual targeting, balance adjustments, and modes such as Must Style and Gods Must Die give returning players ways to alter the feel and difficulty rather than simply replaying the original configuration. The Vergil campaign and Bloody Palace add further material. These are edition features and review impressions, not a claim of independent performance testing.

Visuals and performance claims

Ninja Theory announced an uprezzed presentation with a 1080p resolution and 60 fps target. Those are developer-stated specifications, not results from an independent benchmark. Review reactions to the visuals were less uniform than reactions to the combat: at least one cited critic judged the upgrade limited compared with the older PC version, while other excerpts praised the remaster or emphasized gameplay. The practical distinction is that the edition is notable for its options and content even if its visual upgrade is not universally seen as a major leap.

Which platforms can you play it on?

The edition was released for PS4 and Xbox One. Current store listings add important compatibility context: Xbox lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, while the US PlayStation Store lists the PS4 version as playable on PS5 and warns that some PS4 features may be absent. That PlayStation listing does not establish a native PS5 edition.

Release-date fields differ by source and platform. The Xbox Store lists March 10, 2015; the PlayStation Blog announcement advertised a March 17 PS4 launch, while the current US PlayStation Store page displays February 19, 2015 in its release field. These dates should not be collapsed into one universal launch date. See the Xbox listing, PlayStation Blog announcement, and US PlayStation Store page.

Is it worth playing?

If you already enjoy the reboot’s fast action, the Definitive Edition is the more feature-rich way to play it: it bundles the released DLC and adds modes that make combat more configurable or demanding. For newcomers, the favorable critic aggregate is encouraging, but it does not erase the more mixed user reception or disagreement about how substantial the visual upgrade feels. The strongest case for this edition is its gameplay options and included content, not a promise that it resolves every objection to the reboot’s presentation or identity within the series.
