dmcolor.dll is not a normal modern application runtime. It is an old Microsoft universal printer-driver color library associated with Windows 3.x and Windows 9x, including the Windows Millennium family.

If a Windows 98 or Windows Me printer installer requests it, restore the file from the matching Windows installation media or reinstall the printer’s compatible driver. Windows 98 installation media places DMCOLOR.DLL in DRIVER11.CAB under the WIN98 source directory.
If Windows 10 or Windows 11 displays the error, the more likely problem is an obsolete 16-bit printer installer or an incomplete legacy driver package. Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder will not make old software compatible with modern Windows. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website, and do not use regsvr32 on this file.
What is dmcolor.dll?
dmcolor.dll is a Microsoft universal printer-driver color printing support library. Microsoft’s Windows 3.1 technical documentation describes it as the “Universal color printing support library,” used with UNIDRV.DLL by compatible printer drivers.

It was used by multiple universal printer-driver combinations, including color printer families from different manufacturers. It is therefore a driver component, not a general-purpose Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
The file is associated with the Microsoft Windows Millennium Operating System description found in historical file references. However, the strongest publicly documented installation-media evidence places an 18,272-byte copy in the Windows 98 DRIVER11.CAB cabinet. That does not prove that every Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, or printer-driver release used the same copy.
This distinction matters. A file from a Windows 98 printer package is not automatically suitable for an unrelated Windows 10 or Windows 11 program.
Why does a printer installer request it?
The usual reason is that an old printer mini-driver expects shared Windows 9x printer components. During setup, the installer may ask for the Windows installation CD and fail when it cannot find DMCOLOR.DLL, UNIDRV.DLL, or another shared module.

On current Windows, a request for dmcolor.dll usually indicates a compatibility problem rather than a missing modern system file.
Fix 1: Identify the printer package and Windows version
Before copying anything, establish which program is requesting the file.
- Note the exact program or installer name shown in the error.
- Note the printer manufacturer and complete model number.
- Check whether the request appears during printer installation or when launching another application.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type under Windows specifications.
If the request appears during printer setup, treat it as a printer-driver problem first. If a modern game, utility, or unrelated application requests dmcolor.dll, do not assume the file belongs there. Uninstall and reinstall that application from its original official source, then scan the system.

Fix 2: Restore the file from matching Windows installation media
This is the correct repair for a genuine Windows 98 printer installation that asks for DMCOLOR.DLL.
The file was included in the Windows 98 DRIVER11.CAB cabinet. A contemporary printer installation procedure may ask you to insert the Windows 98 CD and point Setup to the WIN98 directory.
When the installer is asking for the file
- Insert the matching Windows installation CD.
- In the file-location dialog, select the CD drive.
- Open the
WIN98directory. - Click OK, Browse, or Continue, depending on the installer.
- Allow Windows Setup to locate the file in the cabinet files.
- Finish the printer installation.
- Restart the computer if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
Do not use a Windows 98 file simply because the filename matches if the installer targets a different operating system. The printer driver and shared library should come from the same generation of installation media.
If you need to extract the file manually
On an actual Windows 98 system, use a cabinet extraction utility that supports Windows cabinet files. Extract DMCOLOR.DLL from the correct DRIVER11.CAB, then point the printer installer to the folder containing the extracted file.
Do not place the extracted file into a modern Windows system directory as a general repair. The file belongs with the legacy printer installation that requested it.

A modern compatible driver is preferable to reconstructing a Windows 9x installation.
Fix 3: Install a compatible printer driver on Windows 10 or 11
If the error occurs on Windows 10 or Windows 11, stop trying to satisfy the old installer with individual DLL files. Replace the obsolete package.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- Select the printer if it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Open the printer’s page in Printers & scanners.
- Select Print a test page.
If Windows does not find the printer:
- Select Add device.
- Wait for the search to finish.
- Select Add manually.
- Choose the appropriate connection method, such as a local printer, network printer, or shared printer.
- Select a compatible built-in driver when Windows offers one.
- Complete the wizard.
- Print a test page.
For a USB printer, connect it directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub during installation. For a network printer, confirm that the printer and PC are on the same network before changing drivers.
If the printer manufacturer provides a Windows 10 or Windows 11 package for the exact model, use that package instead of the old Windows 98 CD. If no modern driver exists, Windows’ built-in compatible driver may provide basic printing while omitting obsolete manufacturer utilities.

Manually searching through driver versions and removing old packages can be tedious, especially when Windows lists several similar printer entries. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version repair and installation features are optional, and the printer manufacturer’s compatible package remains the right source for this specific legacy dependency.
Fix 4: Remove the old printer package and reinstall cleanly
An incomplete installation can leave behind a printer entry that repeatedly calls the old DLL.
- Disconnect the printer from the computer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the old printer driver in the Drivers tab.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current compatible driver.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
If printui /s /t2 does not open, use Control Panel:

- Type
control. - Press Enter.
- Open Devices and Printers.
- Select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Remove the obsolete printer driver.
Do not remove drivers for printers that are still in use unless you have confirmed the correct model and package.
Fix 5: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
If the file was previously present in a trusted legacy installation and disappeared suddenly, check antivirus history.
Windows Security steps
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to the printer installer or
dmcolor.dll.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The original printer package is trusted.
- The file came from the original installation media or a known manufacturer package.
- The detection clearly identifies a false positive.
- You will reinstall the complete driver package afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to install an unexplained DLL. A file with a familiar name can still be malicious, altered, or incorrectly packaged.

Fix 6: Use Device Manager for driver cleanup or rollback
Device Manager is useful when the printer has a partially installed or malfunctioning modern driver. It is not a way to make a Windows 9x DLL work on a 64-bit system.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected printer or related device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Click Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct driver for the printer and current Windows version.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the printer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, reinstall the previous compatible package from the printer manufacturer.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when the problem is modern Windows corruption
dmcolor.dll is not normally a protected Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime file. SFC and DISM will not recreate a missing Windows 98 printer component if it is not part of the current Windows image.

Use these commands when Windows itself has damaged or missing protected components, or when several unrelated Windows features are failing.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer or affected application.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC repair sequence in its Windows component repair guidance and documents the SFC command separately here.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove dmcolor.dll exists. It may simply not belong to the current Windows installation.

Do not use regsvr32 for dmcolor.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or OLE components.
dmcolor.dll is documented as a universal printer-driver support library, not as a self-registering COM server. Registering it is therefore not an appropriate repair.
Do not run:
regsvr32 dmcolor.dll
You may receive an error stating that the module was loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found, or that the module cannot be loaded. On modern 64-bit Windows, a 16-bit DLL can also fail because the operating system does not natively run Win16 binaries.

Historical references identify dmcolor.dll as a Win16 printer-driver component. Modern 64-bit Windows does not natively execute Win16 binaries.
That means:
- A 16-bit printer installer may not run on 64-bit Windows.
- Copying the DLL to
System32does not convert it into a 64-bit DLL. - Copying it to
SysWOW64does not make it a valid 32-bit modern driver. - A 32-bit printer package may still be incompatible if it depends on Windows 9x or Win16 components.
- An error saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” commonly indicates wrong architecture, corruption, or an incompatible loader.
If the printer is essential, use a modern driver, a compatible operating system installation, or a suitable virtualized legacy environment. Do not force a Windows 98 driver into Windows 10 or Windows 11 system directories.

Do not download dmcolor.dll from a DLL index or file-sharing site. These files may be:

- The wrong architecture
- From an unrelated Windows release
- Modified or corrupted
- Missing required companion files
- Packaged with malware
- Unable to fix the underlying incompatible installer
The safe sources are the matching Windows installation media, the original printer driver media, or a complete driver package supplied by the printer manufacturer for your current operating system.
There is no reason to install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET just because the filename ends in .dll. Those packages do not provide the documented universal printer color library.
When System Restore or Windows repair helps
System Restore is relevant only if the file previously existed in a compatible Windows installation and a restore point predates its removal. It is not a source for a missing Windows 98 cabinet file.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, use Windows recovery or a supported repair reinstall only when broader Windows problems remain after driver cleanup and DISM/SFC. Microsoft provides instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version.
A repair reinstall will not make an obsolete 16-bit printer installer compatible with 64-bit Windows.

Is dmcolor.dll normally present in Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Should I copy dmcolor.dll into System32?
No. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder on modern Windows. That can create conflicts and cannot solve a 16-bit compatibility problem.
What is DRIVER11.CAB?
DRIVER11.CAB is a Windows 98 cabinet file that contains printer-driver components, including a documented DMCOLOR.DLL copy. When a Windows 98 printer installer asks for the file, point it to the WIN98 directory on the matching installation CD.

Can I register dmcolor.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not an appropriate fix because this is a printer-driver support library, not a documented self-registering COM DLL.
What if the error comes from a game?
That is unusual. Reinstall the game from its official source, check its files using the publisher’s repair option, and scan the system. Do not supply a random copy of dmcolor.dll.
What if my printer has no Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver?
Try Windows’ built-in compatible printer driver. If the printer depends on Windows 9x software and no compatible driver exists, use a supported legacy environment or replace the printer rather than copying old DLLs into modern Windows.
