82557ndi.dll: Restore Legacy Intel Network Setup Safely on Windows

82557ndi.dll is a legacy Intel 82557 Network Device Installer file, not a normal Windows runtime. If Windows reports that 82557ndi.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the correct repair depends on whether an old Intel network-driver installer is running or a modern program is incorrectly requesting obsolete installation media.

This file is associated with Intel 82557 and related 8255x 10/100 Ethernet adapters. It was used with legacy Windows 95-era driver packages that could also contain NET82557.INF, e100b.sys, and Intel PRO/100 adapter files. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or standard Windows 10/11 System32 DLL.

First, identify when the error appears

Before copying anything, note the exact stage at which the message appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • During Windows 95/98 setup or inside a retro virtual machine: the installer probably needs the original Intel adapter driver directory.
  • During installation of an old hardware driver: the package may be incomplete, damaged, or pointed at the wrong source.
  • When launching a current Windows application or game: identify that executable first. The program may contain an obsolete installer dependency or may be incorrectly identifying the missing file.
  • After antivirus activity: check whether a trusted file was quarantined.
  • On a physical modern PC with no Intel 82557 adapter: the request is probably unrelated to the active network hardware.

Historical installation messages include “The file 82557ndi.dll on Windows 95 CD-ROM could not be found” and “Copying files: The file 82557NDI.DLL could not be found.” Those messages came from old hardware-detection and adapter-installation procedures, not from a normal modern application runtime.

Fix 1: Provide the correct Intel driver media

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

This is the most likely fix when the error appears during Windows 95/98 setup, a retro-PC installation, or an old Intel PRO/100 driver installation.

You need one of these sources:

  • The original Intel adapter disk
  • An OEM recovery CD or driver directory
  • A complete, trusted archive of the exact adapter package
  • An extracted driver folder containing 82557NDI.DLL and NET82557.INF

Do not use the Windows CD simply because the error names it. Old setup programs sometimes report the current source location even when the required file is actually on the Intel adapter disk or OEM driver media.

In Windows 95 or Windows 98 Setup

  1. Insert or mount the original Intel or OEM driver media.
  2. When Setup reports that 82557ndi.dll cannot be found, select Browse.
  3. Choose the drive containing the Intel adapter files.
  4. Open the folder for the Intel PRO/100 or 82557 adapter.
  5. Confirm that the folder contains 82557NDI.DLL.
  6. If available, confirm that NET82557.INF is in the same driver directory.
  7. Select the folder and choose OK or Retry.
  8. Continue the installation and restart when requested.

If you extracted the package, preserve the complete directory structure. Do not move only the DLL into a random folder. The installer may also need the INF file, driver files, configuration data, and any catalog files included with the package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Setup still cannot find the file

Check the following:

  • The media is mounted in the virtual machine, not only on the host computer.
  • The drive letter shown in Setup matches the mounted disk.
  • The folder is for an Intel 82557 or PRO/100 adapter rather than another network card.
  • The file name is exactly 82557NDI.DLL; do not substitute similarly named files.
  • The file was not blocked, deleted, or partially extracted.
  • The virtual machine is emulating compatible network hardware.

A successful repair allows hardware setup to continue without requesting the same file again. If Setup requests additional Intel files, that usually confirms that you selected the correct driver family but need the complete package rather than a single DLL.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the old driver package

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

If the error occurs while installing an Intel network adapter driver, the package may be incomplete or damaged.

  1. Cancel the failed installation.
  2. Open the folder containing the driver package.
  3. Look for 82557NDI.DLL, NET82557.INF, e100b.sys, and other Intel PRO/100 files.
  4. If several expected files are missing, discard that incomplete extraction.
  5. Obtain a complete matching package from the original OEM media, adapter manufacturer, or a carefully preserved legacy archive.
  6. Extract the entire package to a new folder.
  7. Run the installer from that folder, or right-click the matching .INF file and choose Install where that option is available.
  8. If the installer is being run inside a virtual machine, connect the driver media to that virtual machine before starting setup.

Do not combine files from different Intel adapter packages. A DLL with a similar name may belong to another controller family and may not work with the INF or system driver you are installing.

If the package runs only on Windows 95 or Windows 98, installing it directly on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is unlikely to produce a supported network driver. Use a compatible retro environment instead.

Fix 3: Identify the program requesting the file on Windows 10 or 11

Time needed: 10–25 minutes

A current Windows application should not normally need the Windows 95-era Intel network installer. If the message appears when launching a program, find out which executable is making the request before repairing Windows.

  1. Note the application name and the exact error text.
  2. Right-click the application shortcut and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Shortcut tab and note the Target path.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  5. Select Details and look for the program process when the error appears.
  6. Check the application’s installation folder for an old setup utility, hardware-detection tool, or bundled installer.
  7. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Reinstall the program using its original, trusted installer.
  10. If the program is old, check whether it has a newer release or a documented compatibility mode.

Do not assume that a modern game or application needs this file merely because a DLL message appears. The file’s documented role is an Intel adapter installation helper. If the requesting program is not a legacy Intel hardware installer, the program may be damaged, misconfigured, or unsafe.

For an old application, right-click its installer or executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, and test an appropriate compatibility mode only when the program’s documentation supports it. Compatibility mode cannot turn a Windows 95 network driver into a supported Windows 11 driver.

Fix 4: Check Device Manager and the actual adapter

Time needed: 10–15 minutes

This step determines whether the computer even contains hardware related to the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Look for an Intel PRO/100, 82557, or related 8255x device.
  4. If the device has a warning icon, right-click it and choose Properties.
  5. Open the General tab and read the device status.
  6. Open the Details tab.
  7. Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
  8. Record the hardware IDs before searching for a driver.
  9. If the adapter is not present, do not force an 82557 driver onto another network device.
  10. If the adapter is present, use the exact model and hardware ID to locate its matching driver package.

On a modern physical PC, an 82557-based adapter is legacy hardware. Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility is not established for this old installation component. A supported replacement network adapter may be safer than trying to make a Windows 95 driver operate as a modern kernel driver.

When manually updating a device, right-click it in Device Manager, select Update driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers, and select the complete matching driver folder. Do not point Windows at a folder containing only 82557ndi.dll; that file is not a substitute for the device driver.

Manually comparing old driver packages and hardware IDs can be slow, especially when several versions appear valid. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify driver updates; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this specific legacy file, reinstalling the correct Intel or OEM package remains the definitive fix.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

If the file was present previously or disappeared immediately after extracting a trusted installer, your security software may have quarantined it.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review entries matching 82557ndi.dll or the driver package.
  5. Check the detected file path and the source of the package.
  6. Restore the file only if it came from trusted Intel or OEM media and belongs to the matching adapter package.
  7. Scan the complete extracted driver folder.
  8. Run a full Windows Security scan before using the installer again.

Do not restore a file solely because its name contains “Intel.” A filename does not prove that a file is genuine or safe. If the file came from an unknown download, leave it quarantined and obtain a complete package from trusted installation media instead.

If antivirus repeatedly removes the file from a trusted, matching legacy package, scan the archive on a separate system and check whether the package has been altered. Avoid disabling protection permanently to force an installation.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall the application that requests it

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

Use this fix when the message appears during a modern application launch rather than during network hardware setup.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Locate the application named in the error context.
  3. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Remove only leftover folders clearly belonging to that application.
  6. Download or restore the installer from the application developer or original installation media.
  7. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
  8. Complete the installation.
  9. Launch the application and check whether the error returns.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the error mentions a DLL. Those components do not replace this Intel installer file. Install a runtime only when the application’s own documentation or installer specifically identifies it as required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling the application reproduces the same request, contact the program vendor or examine which executable is requesting the file. The program may be bundling an obsolete Intel hardware utility that cannot run on the current operating system.

Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15–40 minutes

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Intel installer file that was never part of the protected Windows component store. Use them when Windows has other corruption symptoms, such as broken Windows Update, damaged built-in applications, or multiple missing Windows files.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application or installer again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the 82557ndi.dll error remains while other Windows functions work normally, return to the driver-package and compatibility checks rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Fix 8: Do not register this file with regsvr32

Time needed: 1 minute

regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

There is no reliable evidence that 82557ndi.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Its documented role is an adapter installation helper, so this command is not an appropriate standard repair:

regsvr32 82557ndi.dll

It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer failed, without repairing the driver installation.

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 either. There is no verified modern 32-bit/64-bit pair, and the available evidence points to a legacy installer component rather than a current Windows system library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only for a recent disappearance

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore can help if a trusted driver installation worked recently and the file or configuration then disappeared.

  1. Press Windows key and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Confirm the restore point.
  7. Save open work and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore is not a substitute for original driver media. It cannot recreate a file that was never present in the selected restore point, and it will not make an unsupported Windows 95 driver compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.

What usually causes this error

Cause Best response
Windows 95/98 setup is using the wrong source drive Browse to the Intel or OEM driver folder
The driver package is incomplete Obtain the complete package, including INF and SYS files
The wrong adapter driver was selected Confirm the model and hardware ID
The file was quarantined Restore only from trusted matching media
An old installer is running on Windows 10/11 Use a compatible virtual machine or replace the obsolete hardware
A modern application requests the file Identify and reinstall the requesting application
Windows component corruption is also present Run DISM first, then SFC
A random DLL was copied into System32 Remove that approach and repair the original installation source

Safe source guidance

Do not download 82557ndi.dll from a random DLL website. That approach can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible file, or a lone DLL that does not include the INF, system driver, and configuration files required by the installer.

Frequently asked questions

Is 82557ndi.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is associated with Intel 82557/8255x network-adapter installation and legacy Intel PRO/100 driver media. It should not be treated as a protected Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. There is no reliable evidence establishing a modern 32-bit or 64-bit system-directory version. The correct location is normally the matching legacy installer or driver directory.

Do I need Visual C++ or DirectX?

Not for this file based on the available evidence. 82557ndi.dll is not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET component.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Usually not. The file is documented as a network-device installer helper, not as a self-registering COM DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore it?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this file belongs to a third-party legacy Intel installation package.

Why does the message say the file is on the Windows 95 CD?

Old setup procedures can report the current source drive even when the required file is actually on the Intel adapter disk or OEM driver folder. Choose Browse and select the matching Intel directory.

What if I see the error on Windows 11?

Identify the requesting executable first. Windows 11 is not established as compatible with this Windows 95-era Intel installer component. Use a compatible retro environment for the old driver, or replace unsupported hardware and software with current alternatives.

Can I use a similarly named DLL?

No. Names such as 8255indi.dll or 8255xndi.dll do not prove that the files are interchangeable. Use the exact file from the matching Intel adapter package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know the repair worked?

The legacy installer should proceed without requesting 82557ndi.dll again, or the application that raised the error should launch normally. If the same message returns, verify the adapter model, package completeness, antivirus history, virtual-machine hardware, and operating-system compatibility.
