What this file actually does
DmxBici.dll is a private module belonging to Microsoft Photo Gallery, also known as Windows Live Photo Gallery. It was distributed as part of the discontinued Windows Essentials suite, which included Windows Photo Gallery.

The location is typical rather than guaranteed. Older Windows Essentials installations, restored system images, and installations made from different releases may use another directory.

Historical inventories identify several x86 builds, including 16.4.3505.0912, 16.4.3508.205, and 16.4.3528.331. These are old application builds, not current Windows system components. Historical Microsoft release information lists Photo Gallery as part of Windows Essentials and documents related Windows Imaging Component requirements, but that does not make DmxBici.dll a Windows Imaging Component file. This file is not:
- A core Windows DLL
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX file
- A .NET Framework file
- A printer, display, or other hardware driver
That distinction determines the repair. The application that owns the file must be repaired or reinstalled.
Causes matched to symptoms

Possible Windows wording includes “The program can’t start because DmxBici.dll was not found,” “The file DmxBici.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because DmxBici.dll was not found.” Exact wording varies by Windows version and by the application loader.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Photo Gallery
This is the most likely solution because DmxBici.dll belongs to Photo Gallery itself.
Check whether Windows Essentials is still installed
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter to open Programs and Features.
- Look for Windows Essentials, Windows Live Essentials, or a similarly named Photo Gallery entry.
- Select it and check whether Uninstall/Change, Repair, or a comparable maintenance option is available.
- Choose Repair if Windows offers it.
- Select Photo Gallery if the installer presents individual applications.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
- Open Photo Gallery from the Start menu.
If Photo Gallery starts normally and does not display the missing-DLL message, the repair restored the file and its supporting configuration.
Use Apps & features if the older panel does not show the entry
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Windows Essentials or Windows Live Essentials.
- Select the entry and choose Advanced options, Modify, or Uninstall, depending on what Windows displays.
- Use the available repair or modify option.
- Restart the computer and test Photo Gallery.
Legacy installers do not always expose a modern repair button. If no repair option exists, uninstall the damaged installation and reinstall Photo Gallery as part of the same Windows Essentials release. Select Photo Gallery during setup rather than installing only another Windows Essentials application.
If Windows Essentials is not installed
A missing-DLL message can survive after the program itself has been removed. Check the following locations:
- The Start menu for Photo Gallery
- Desktop and taskbar shortcuts
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LivePhoto Gallery- Startup entries in Task Manager
- File associations for image files
If the Photo Gallery folder and executable are gone, there is no reason to restore only DmxBici.dll. Either remove the stale shortcut or reinstall the complete application from trusted installation media.

If you have the original installer, a verified organizational archive, or a known-good system image, use that rather than a standalone DLL download. Do not assume that every installer found in a search result is genuine or safe.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a legitimate old DLL if it is damaged, modified, or judged suspicious. Do not immediately disable protection or restore the file without checking the surrounding installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to
DmxBici.dllor the Photo Gallery installation directory. - Expand the detection and review its path and action.
- If the file was quarantined, compare the path with the expected Photo Gallery directory.
- Restore it only when the parent Photo Gallery installation came from trusted media and the detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- After restoring it, repair or reinstall the complete Photo Gallery installation.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unfamiliar program directory, do not restore it merely because its filename is correct. A malicious file can use the name of a legitimate DLL.

If Windows Security continues to quarantine a file restored from a questionable installer, remove that installer and obtain a clean, trusted copy of the complete application. Repeatedly restoring the same file is not a repair strategy.
Fix 3: Verify the file’s location and signature
A genuine copy should normally be beside the 32-bit Photo Gallery executable, commonly under:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LivePhoto Gallery
The folder name may differ on an older or customized installation. The important point is that the DLL should be part of the application directory, not placed manually into a Windows system directory.
To inspect an existing file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file.
- Right-click
DmxBici.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description, product name, and publisher information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that it identifies Microsoft Corporation.
A missing signature alone does not prove that a file is malicious, especially with legacy software, but an unexpected publisher, a failed signature, or an unrelated file path deserves investigation.

where /r "C:Program Files (x86)" DmxBici.dll
This searches the 32-bit program area for copies of the file. Multiple results may indicate an old installation, a restored image, or more than one Windows Essentials version. Do not choose a copy based only on its filename. Repair the installation associated with the executable producing the error.
Fix 4: Do not copy this DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
DmxBici.dll is identified as an x86 application module. A 32-bit application generally loads private DLLs from its own installation directory.
Do not use these folders as a workaround:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite its name, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system components on 64-bit Windows. It is not a general-purpose location for application DLLs. System32 is also not a universal destination for missing files.
Copying the DLL to a system directory can create several problems:
- Photo Gallery may still fail because companion files are missing.
- Windows may load the wrong copy.
- A 64-bit DLL cannot substitute for the expected 32-bit module.
- A mismatched build may produce a procedure-entry-point error.
- The application installation remains incomplete.
- A malicious file gains a more prominent search location.
If you already copied a file manually, remove it from the system directory and repair the full Photo Gallery installation. Avoid deleting unrelated Windows files.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for repairing every missing or damaged DLL.

There is no reliable evidence that DmxBici.dll is a self-registering COM component. It is a private Photo Gallery module, so this command is not an appropriate first-line repair:
regsvr32 DmxBici.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” or an architecture-related error. That result does not identify the original problem.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL and confirms that the DLL supports registration. For DmxBici.dll, repair or reinstall Photo Gallery instead.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows itself may be damaged. They generally do not reconstruct a missing private DLL installed under Program Files (x86).
Use them when several Windows programs are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the problem began with broader system corruption.

Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test Photo Gallery.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the original application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing Photo Gallery DLL is still most likely an application-installation problem. If it cannot repair some files, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the DISM-then-SFC sequence.
When you are manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for reinstalling Photo Gallery.
Do not claim that SFC specifically repairs DmxBici.dll. These commands target protected Windows components, not every application file.
Fix 7: Install relevant Windows updates, but avoid unrelated runtimes
Photo Gallery’s historical release notes describe dependencies on Windows Imaging Component updates for some functionality. Windows Update can therefore matter to the overall legacy application environment, but it does not mean that Windows Update distributes DmxBici.dll.
To check for updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Photo Gallery.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET Framework packages solely because DmxBici.dll is missing. Those packages are not the owning source of this DLL. Install or repair them only if the actual error names a missing runtime file or the Photo Gallery installer explicitly requires one.
Fix 8: Check for a stale startup entry or file association
If the message appears when you sign in rather than when you open Photo Gallery, the application may already be gone while Windows still tries to launch an old entry.

Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Windows Live, Photo Gallery, or an entry with an unavailable file location.
- Right-click an entry you no longer need.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a stale entry stops the message at login, but it does not restore Photo Gallery. Reinstall the application if you still need it.

Check shortcuts
Search the Start menu, desktop, taskbar, and Startup folder for Photo Gallery shortcuts. Right-click a shortcut, select Properties, and inspect its Target. If it points to a missing executable or an old drive letter, delete the shortcut or reinstall the application.
Do not delete registry entries at random. Registry cleaners are not a reliable solution for a missing private DLL and can remove information needed by other legacy applications.

DmxBici.dll is not a hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.
Use Device Manager only if the Photo Gallery problem occurs alongside a genuine hardware or imaging-device problem, such as a scanner or camera that Windows no longer detects.

- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, or Portable Devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
A camera or scanner driver repair may restore device access, but it will not replace DmxBici.dll. The Photo Gallery installation still needs to be repaired separately.
When manually hunting through hardware vendors and guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify available updates; installation through the full version is optional, and updating a driver does not replace the definitive Photo Gallery reinstall.
Fix 10: Handle wrong builds and mixed installations
Windows Essentials installations can become inconsistent after an upgrade, disk-image restore, or partial removal. For example, the executable may come from one release while DLLs remain from another.
Check the Photo Gallery executable:
- Browse to the Photo Gallery installation directory.
- Right-click the main Photo Gallery executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details.
- Record the product and file version information.
- Compare it with the DLL information in the same directory.
Do not mix individual files from Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 and Windows Essentials 2012. A file that has the right name can still export different functions from the build expected by the application.

If you find multiple Photo Gallery directories, uninstall the damaged or duplicate Windows Essentials installation where possible. Then reinstall one complete, matching application release and restart Windows.
Safe download guidance
There is no current official Microsoft standalone redistributable for DmxBici.dll. Downloading the DLL by itself is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to the wrong historical build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because other Photo Gallery files are also missing.
The safer sources are:
- A trusted original Windows Essentials installation package already in your possession
- A verified archival copy of the complete original installer
- A known-good system image containing the complete Photo Gallery installation
- An existing, intact Photo Gallery installation on a system you control, used only as part of restoring the matching application environment
Even a clean copy should not be dropped into System32 or SysWOW64. The correct location is normally the Photo Gallery application directory, and the complete application should be restored together.

Microsoft’s current Photos app is separate software. Installing or resetting current Windows Photos will not provide DmxBici.dll.
If reinstalling Photo Gallery still fails
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm that the error appears when launching Photo Gallery, not a stale shortcut or startup entry.
- Confirm that the file is expected in the same directory as the 32-bit Photo Gallery executable.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Remove manually copied DLLs from system directories.
- Uninstall duplicate or partial Windows Essentials installations.
- Reinstall the complete matching Photo Gallery package.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update.
- Run DISM, then SFC, if other Windows components are also failing.

What if Photo Gallery is no longer installed?
Remove the stale shortcut or startup entry if you no longer need the program. If you do need it, restore the complete Photo Gallery or Windows Essentials installation from trusted legacy media rather than downloading only the DLL.
What if the error appears after reinstalling?
Check for a mixed installation, antivirus quarantine, multiple Windows Essentials directories, or another missing dependency. If several unrelated programs fail, run DISM followed by SFC and investigate broader Windows corruption.
