pxwave.dll errors usually appear when an older disc-burning or disc-publishing application cannot load its PX Engine files. The safest fix is to identify the application that installed pxwave.dll, then repair or reinstall that complete application rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The exact errors you may see
Windows or the affected program may display one of these messages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- “This application failed to start because pxwave.dll was not found.”
- “The file pxwave.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: pxwave.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading pxwave.dll.”
- “The Px Engine did not load correctly. This is probably because some mandatory dlls are missing or damaged. Please try to reinstall the application.”
The wording varies, but the meaning is similar: the program cannot load one component of its PX Engine installation. It does not prove that Windows itself is missing a Microsoft runtime.

Do this first:
- Identify the program shown in the error or the program you started immediately before the message appeared.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find that disc-burning, disc-publishing, recovery-media, or printer utility.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the program and reinstall it from the hardware manufacturer or software vendor’s official installer.
- Restart Windows and launch the application again.
For Primera software, the relevant products can include PrimoDVD, PTPublisher, and applications built around PTBurn. Some OEM recovery-media utilities and disc-publishing programs may also install the PX Engine.
Do not download pxwave.dll from a random DLL site or copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. A replacement may have the wrong version or architecture and may still be missing the companion PX Engine files that the application needs.
What pxwave.dll does
PxWave is an audio-related component inside the PX Engine. The PX Engine is a group of files used by certain applications to write, publish, or otherwise manage optical discs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A working installation may contain related files including:
Px.dllPxMas.dllPxSub.dllPxWave.dll
These files are normally installed as a matching bundle. Replacing only pxwave.dll can leave the program unable to load another required component.
The file is associated with Sonic Solutions technology, but it should not be treated as a standalone consumer application. The important question is which installed program brought the PX Engine onto your computer.
Find the application requesting the file
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the text around the error. The program name may be visible even when the message mentions only pxwave.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think about what you launched immediately before the error:
- A disc-burning application
- A CD or DVD publishing utility
- Printer software for a disc publisher
- A recovery-media creation tool
- An older authoring or backup application
- Software bundled with optical-drive or publishing hardware
If the error appears at startup, check the notification area near the clock and the list of startup applications. An older utility may be loading automatically even if you did not open it yourself.

Check the installation history
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Sort the list by install date if that option is available and look for recently installed, updated, or removed disc-related software.
Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Older installers often appear there even when they do not provide a modern Settings entry.
Inspect the file path, if the file still exists
Search for the file from File Explorer:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Enter
pxwave.dllin the search box. - Right-click a result and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
A path under a program’s own folder is strong evidence of ownership. On older systems, PX Engine files may also have been installed under:
C:WindowsSystem32on 32-bit WindowsC:WindowsSysWOW64when 32-bit software runs on 64-bit Windows
Those folders do not make pxwave.dll a Windows-owned file. They reflect how some legacy installers deployed their components.
Fix 1: Repair the parent application
Repair is the least disruptive option when the application supports it.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application associated with the error.
- Select the three-dot button beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Some traditional desktop programs show Modify or Repair instead:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options when available.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen the program.
If there is no repair option, use the program’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Change.
How to tell whether repair worked
The repair succeeded if the application opens without the pxwave.dll message and can reach the operation that previously failed. If the same PX Engine error returns, the installation may be missing several files or may contain mismatched versions. Continue with a clean reinstall instead of copying an individual DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete PX Engine application
A complete reinstall is the most likely solution when the program was partially removed, interrupted during an update, or cleaned by another utility.

Before uninstalling, locate:
- The application’s official installer
- Your product key or license information
- Any hardware-specific software package
- Saved projects or settings that the program does not store elsewhere
Then:
- Close the affected application.
- Disconnect the disc publisher or other related hardware if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the parent application.
- Restart Windows.
- If the vendor’s removal instructions specifically identify leftover PX Engine files, remove only the files and folders named by that vendor.
- Run the official installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reconnect the hardware when prompted.
- Start the application and test the operation that produced the error.
For older PrimoDVD installations, the documented repair approach is to remove the PX files as part of the vendor’s procedure and reinstall PrimoDVD. For PTPublisher, use the complete current installer supplied for the product rather than extracting one DLL from an older package.
Do not combine pxwave.dll from one release with Px.dll, PxMas.dll, or PxSub.dll from another. PX Engine components are expected to work as a set.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a legitimate legacy component, particularly when an old installer uses unusual packaging or an outdated signing method. This is only one possible cause, not proof that antivirus caused every pxwave.dll error.
Check the quarantine history:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
pxwave.dll, the parent application, or its installation folder. - Expand the entry and review the detected path and action.
- Restore or allow the file only when the path belongs to a trusted installation and you obtained the application from its vendor.
If the file was quarantined from an unknown location, do not restore it. Uninstall the parent program, scan the computer, and reinstall the program from its official source.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file may cause Defender to detect it again until it is explicitly allowed. A safer long-term answer is usually to reinstall a supported vendor package, not to create a broad antivirus exclusion.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 4: Match the application architecture and PX Engine version
The known historical listings for pxwave.dll are 32-bit and include versions such as 4.28.6.0, 4.16.17.0, 4.10.32.501, 4.4.46.500, 3.6.36.500, and 3.4.36.500. These are reported third-party file details, not an official compatibility table, and they are not interchangeable.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit programs through its compatibility layer. That does not mean a 64-bit replacement DLL should be installed. Install the complete 32-bit application and its matching PX Engine package.
Check the affected program’s folder and installation record rather than relying only on the Windows folder. If different PX Engine files have different dates, versions, or source folders, remove the application and reinstall its complete package.
This issue can occur after:
- A failed program update
- A cleanup utility removed “unused” files
- A failed uninstall left part of the engine behind
- A 32-bit program was replaced with a different release
- Malware cleanup removed a file without repairing the application
If the application is tied to a disc publisher, also install the hardware vendor’s matching application and firmware package where applicable. Do not permanently disable Windows security features to make an old application run. If the vendor documents a compatibility issue involving Core Isolation or Memory Integrity, treat any temporary change as a vendor-directed test, restore the protection afterward, and prefer a newer compatible PX Engine release.

Fix 5: Update related hardware software or drivers
A missing PX Engine file is normally an application-installation problem, not a Windows device-driver problem. However, disc publishers, optical drives, and printer-based publishing systems may also depend on a compatible hardware package. If the error began after changing the device or installing a major application update, install the driver and application package supplied for that exact model.
Use this order:
- Disconnect the affected hardware.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Install only a driver that clearly matches the hardware.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the category containing the device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the Device status message under General.
- Use Update driver only with the vendor’s package or Windows Update source.
- Restart and test the parent application.
Do not use Device Manager to replace pxwave.dll; it cannot repair application files.
If manually hunting through model numbers and legacy driver packages is becoming the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies; the full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the PX Engine application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

SFC and DISM are not normal ways to restore pxwave.dll. They repair protected Windows components, while pxwave.dll belongs to third-party application software.
Use them when you also see broader symptoms, such as damaged Windows features, repeated system-file errors, or several unrelated Windows programs failing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Run DISM before SFC. If both commands complete without repairing the application error, return to the parent program’s repair or reinstall process.
Repeatedly running system repair commands while guessing at the cause can waste time. If you want a guided scan instead of manually comparing DISM and SFC results, Outbyte PC Repair can identify reported system issues and perform repairs with its full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns the PX Engine.
Why regsvr32 pxwave.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Running:
regsvr32 pxwave.dll
may produce an entry-point error, a module-not-found error, or no useful change. Even if registration succeeds, it does not restore missing companion files or fix a mismatched PX Engine bundle.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL. There is no general reason to register pxwave.dll as part of its normal repair.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading a single DLL from an unofficial index can introduce:

- Malware or a tampered file
- A 32-bit file for the wrong application
- An incompatible PX Engine release
- A file with missing companion components
- A copy that causes the same error under a different name
Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also make ownership and future updates harder to track. The safe sources are the original application installer, the hardware manufacturer’s support package, Windows Update for applicable drivers, and Microsoft’s own Windows repair tools.
If the error started after a system change
If repairing the parent application did not help and the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup operation, malware-removal action, or failed uninstall:
- Reinstall the parent application first.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Confirm that the PX Engine files come from one matching installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Consider System Restore or another recovery option only if the application reinstall did not resolve the issue and you have a suitable restore point.
System Restore is more appropriate when multiple programs changed at the same time. It is not the first choice for one damaged third-party application.
If the software is no longer supported, keep the original installer and license information. A compatible older Windows environment may be safer than permanently weakening current security protections.
Common questions
Is pxwave.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports treating it as a Windows component. It is associated with the PX Engine used by third-party disc-burning and disc-publishing applications.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is it a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
No. pxwave.dll belongs to the PX Engine. Installing a random Microsoft runtime is unlikely to repair a missing PX Engine bundle.
Which programs use it?
Known examples include PrimoDVD, PTPublisher, PTBurn-based software, disc-publishing utilities, and some OEM recovery-media tools. The exact owner depends on what is installed on your computer.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. That can install the wrong architecture or version and does not restore the rest of the PX Engine. Reinstall the parent application instead.
Why does a 32-bit DLL appear on 64-bit Windows?
Many older applications are 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit program may use PX Engine files installed in SysWOW64 or in the program’s own folder. Use the application’s matching installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can SFC restore pxwave.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party PX Engine files. Use it only when there is evidence of wider Windows corruption.
What if several unrelated applications report the same error?
Do not assume they all need the same downloaded DLL. Check for a damaged installation, malware, disk errors, or a shared legacy software package. Repair each identified parent application and scan Windows Security.
What if the program still fails after reinstalling?
Confirm that the installer matches the application and hardware, check Protection history, remove leftover PX Engine files only when the vendor’s instructions call for it, and verify that the application’s other companion files came from the same release. If the product is obsolete, contact the hardware or software vendor and consider running it in a compatible older Windows environment rather than disabling security protections permanently.
