That is a rules-based recommendation, not a measured damage ranking. The best order still depends on your campaign, level, enemies, and what your table allows.
Rules baseline: 2014 5e and third-party class material
This guide assumes the 2014 rules. D&D Beyond uses “5e” for content built around those rules and “5.5e” for the 2024 revision; it says both will continue to be supported. Ask your DM how the Blood Hunter and 2024 options fit together at your table. See D&D Beyond’s explanation of the 5e and 5.5e labels.
Blood Hunter is a third-party class credited to Matt Mercer and presented on D&D Beyond’s Blood Hunter rules page. It is not a class in the core Player’s Handbook. The Handbook can help with the 2014 core rules, but you will need your table’s permitted Blood Hunter rules separately.
Why Lycan is the best general melee starting point
Order of the Lycan’s Hybrid Transformation is a bonus-action feature that lasts up to one hour and recharges after a short or long rest. In that form, you gain a melee damage bonus, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks that are not made with silvered weapons, and +1 AC if you are not wearing heavy armor.

Predatory Strikes let you make unarmed strikes using Dexterity for attack and damage rolls, apply Crimson Rite to those strikes, and make a bonus-action unarmed strike after taking the Attack action to make an unarmed strike. This gives the Lycan a compact melee package: offense, a conditional layer of defense, and a way to carry rite damage without relying on a conventional weapon.
Ability scores and fighting style
Prioritize Dexterity for this build because Predatory Strikes use it for attack and damage rolls. Constitution is a useful next priority for hit points and resilience, including the hit-point cost of Crimson Rite. This is a feature-based recommendation, not a stat array prescribed by the class. The class’s quick-build guidance suggests Strength or Dexterity first depending on whether you favor melee, archery, or finesse weapons, then Intelligence for blood-curse potency or Constitution for durability.

How the build comes online
Do not assume a low-level Lycan already has the full package. Blood Hunter gains Extra Attack at level 5. The class page lists later improvements to the Lycan’s unarmed strike die and transformation features at level 11, including more transformation uses and regeneration; at level 18, transformation uses become unlimited. The page also lists increasing melee damage and attack bonuses at later levels. Check the current class table and feature text for the exact level-by-level progression before building around a particular breakpoint.
Plan your bonus actions before combat
Crimson Rite and Hybrid Transformation each take a bonus action to activate. Crimson Rite also deals necrotic damage to you equal to one hemocraft die, and the rite lasts until your next short or long rest. While it is active, attacks with the affected weapon are magical. Because Predatory Strikes let you treat rite-compatible unarmed strikes as one weapon, the rite can apply to them too.

These costs create a setup trade-off: you cannot activate both features with the same bonus action. If combat starts before either is active, you may need more than one turn to get both running, and that competes with the bonus-action strike available through Predatory Strikes. Choose when to set up based on the encounter rather than assuming every benefit is active at the start of your first turn.
Account for Lycan’s Bloodlust risk
Bloodlust can turn low hit points into a control problem. If you start your turn below half your hit-point maximum, you must make a DC 8 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, you move directly toward the nearest creature and use the Attack action against it. The class page says the save automatically fails while you are concentrating on a spell or under an effect that prevents concentration, giving Rage as an example.

This matters when choosing tactics or multiclass options: do not plan around staying below half health or adding an effect that prevents concentration without considering the Bloodlust consequence. The trigger is based on your hit points at the start of your turn, so track that threshold carefully.

The order descriptions and feature details are on the Blood Hunter rules page. They support comparing role and matchup, not a universal damage ranking: no published comparative performance statistic or named damage benchmark establishes one order as the highest-DPR choice in every campaign.
