dnsapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, so you should repair Windows or the affected application rather than download a replacement DLL. The safest sequence is to install Windows updates, run DISM followed by SFC, then repair or reinstall the program that reports the error.

What this file actually does

dnsapi.dll is the DNS Client API DLL, a Windows system library published by Microsoft Corporation. It implements Windows DNS API functions used by software that needs to work with DNS services and records. Microsoft documents Dnsapi.dll as the library that implements functions such as DnsReleaseContextHandle in the Windows DNS API.

  • File: dnsapi.dll
  • Description: DNS Client API DLL
  • Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
  • Part of: Microsoft Windows Operating System
  • Category: Microsoft application or component

That does not mean every file named dnsapi.dll is genuine. A Windows copy belongs in a protected Windows system directory. An identically named file inside an unfamiliar application folder may be a private application copy, a damaged file, or a malicious replacement.

Where legitimate copies belong

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:

%WINDIR%System32dnsapi.dll
%WINDIR%SysWOW64dnsapi.dll

The names are counterintuitive:

  • System32 normally contains the native 64-bit system files.
  • SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.

This layout is explained in Microsoft’s documentation for the Windows file system redirector.

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. On 32-bit Windows, only the 32-bit system layout applies.

Do not judge a file by its name alone. File version, architecture, servicing state, timestamp, and size vary between Windows releases and cumulative updates. The version and size examples sometimes shown on DLL-index pages are not universal values for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

What the error usually means

The exact wording helps identify the likely cause:

Error or symptom Most likely explanation
“dnsapi.dll is missing from your computer” The Windows copy was deleted, quarantined, damaged, or cannot be found
“dnsapi.dll was not found” Windows or an application cannot locate the required copy
“The code execution cannot proceed” The file or one of its dependencies may be damaged, incompatible, or missing
“dnsapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” Wrong architecture, corruption, incompatible private copy, or a mismatched binary
“The module dnsapi.dll failed to load” The file may be blocked, damaged, incorrectly loaded, or dependent on another missing component
Only one game or application fails The program installation, launcher, or private DLL copy is more likely than Windows itself
Several programs fail A damaged or quarantined Windows component is more likely
A Wine or compatibility layer reports the error The compatibility environment may lack an implementation; the Windows installation may be unaffected

Think about what changed immediately before the error appeared. Common triggers include a Windows update, application update, failed installation, disk cleanup, antivirus action, malware incident, driver change, or system restore.

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart

Start with Windows Update because pending servicing changes can affect protected system files and the component store.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Check the program again.

If Windows Update reports that a restart is pending, restart before continuing. If the error remains, use the repair commands below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.

When DISM completes successfully, run SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

How to interpret the result

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
Windows did not find a damaged protected system file. If one application still fails, focus on that application’s installation, architecture, launcher, or private DLL copy.

  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”
Restart and test the affected program again.

  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”
Restart, run DISM again, and then repeat sfc /scannow. If the result does not improve, continue with the repair-source and recovery steps in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DISM cannot use Windows Update as its repair source.
Install pending updates, restart, and retry. If it still fails, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine repair source that matches your Windows edition, release, language, and architecture. Do not use an arbitrary folder copied from another computer.

Running these commands manually is safe but can involve repeated scans and unclear results. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it finds; repair is completed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for Windows servicing.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application

If Windows appears normal and only one program reports dnsapi.dll, repair that application before replacing any Windows files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a Microsoft Store or supported Windows app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Repair attempts to fix the installation without removing its application data. If it does not work, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available. Reset may remove application data and settings, so use it only after trying Repair.

Microsoft provides additional guidance for repairing or reinstalling Windows applications.

Repair a traditional desktop program

Open the program’s installer or uninstaller and look for Repair, Modify, or Change. If no repair option exists:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows if prompted.
  7. Download the installer from the application publisher’s official source.
  8. Install the program again.
  9. Test it before adding modifications, unofficial patches, or custom DLL files.

If the program stores saved games or settings locally, back them up according to the publisher’s instructions before uninstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a game launcher installation

A game-specific dnsapi.dll message often comes from an incomplete update or a damaged game installation.

Open the game launcher and look for an option named one of the following:

  • Verify files
  • Verify integrity of files
  • Repair
  • Scan and repair

Select the game, run the verification, and allow the launcher to replace missing or damaged game files. Then restart the launcher and test the game.

Do not copy dnsapi.dll from another game, another PC, or a DLL download page. SFC and DISM repair Windows components, but they do not necessarily repair a game’s private or bundled copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check whether the program needs the 32-bit or 64-bit copy

A 32-bit application may use the 32-bit copy in SysWOW64, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application uses the native copy in System32.

This matters when the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or appears after replacing a file manually.

Check the application’s documentation or publisher support page to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not use a DLL from one architecture in the other architecture’s folder.

Avoid these actions:

  • Do not copy a 32-bit dnsapi.dll into System32.
  • Do not copy a 64-bit dnsapi.dll into SysWOW64.
  • Do not replace a current Windows file with one from an older Windows release.
  • Do not use a file with a different architecture because its size appears similar.
  • Do not overwrite a protected system file while Windows is running.

Microsoft explains the compatibility limits of 32-bit programs on 64-bit Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check antivirus Protection History

Microsoft has documented malware that modifies dnsapi.dll to redirect network traffic. A missing file may therefore be the result of antivirus quarantine rather than accidental deletion.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections involving dnsapi.dll or the affected application.

If Windows Security quarantined the file, do not immediately select Restore. Confirm the detection first and scan the computer. Restoring a genuine threat can put the device at risk.

If the detection appears to be a false positive, update Windows Security and run another scan before considering restoration. If the file was detected inside an application folder, reinstall the application from its official source rather than restoring the file manually.

For a deeper check:

  1. In Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
  2. Run a Full scan.
  3. If the problem continues or malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan when available.
  4. Follow the result shown by Windows Security.

A suspicious dnsapi.dll outside the normal Windows directories, unexpected network redirection, or a security alert should be treated as a possible malware problem.

Fix 6: Look for a suspicious private copy

Applications can load DLLs from their own directories. Depending on the application and its search configuration, a private copy may be loaded before the Windows copy.

To inspect the reported file:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Open file location.
  3. Look for dnsapi.dll in the application directory.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  6. Check the Details tab for publisher and file information.
  7. Compare the location with the normal Windows paths.

A file in an application directory is not automatically malicious. Some legitimate programs ship private dependencies. However, an unexpected copy with no trustworthy publisher information, a recent antivirus alert, or unusual network behavior deserves investigation.

Do not delete or replace the file blindly. First use the application’s Repair or Verify function, then scan the file and the system with Windows Security.

Fix 7: Install only the dependency that the error actually names

dnsapi.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX runtime file, or .NET runtime file. Installing those packages does not normally restore the Windows DNS Client API DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install another runtime only when the complete error identifies that runtime. Examples include:

  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCP140.dll
  • A specific DirectX component
  • A specific .NET runtime

For a real Visual C++ runtime error, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Microsoft lists separate packages including vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe.

Install the architecture required by the affected application. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows. Do not install Visual C++ merely because the filename in the error is dnsapi.dll.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall a related driver only when symptoms point there

A driver is not the normal source of a missing dnsapi.dll, but a recent driver or installer change can coincide with application failures. Consider this step if the problem began immediately after a network driver, graphics driver, security product, or system utility update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install any offered driver.
  8. Restart Windows.

If the problem began directly after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the device.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  6. Restart and test the program.

For a clean reinstall, download the driver from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer’s official support page. Do not use a random driver package.

Manually identifying the correct driver can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows architecture, and manufacturer revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing outdated drivers; installation is completed by the full version, and it is optional rather than necessary for every dnsapi.dll error.

Fix 9: Do not run regsvr32 dnsapi.dll

Do not use this command as a general repair:

regsvr32 dnsapi.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The Windows DNS API library generally does not need this type of registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may see an error similar to:

The module “dnsapi.dll” was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That message does not mean the DLL needs a different registration command. It means the command is not appropriate for this file. Use Windows servicing, application repair, or recovery instead. Microsoft discusses this registration entry-point issue in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, application installation, or system configuration change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can revert system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact. It does not replace a backup, and it may not be available if restore points were disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft provides details about System Restore.

Fix 11: Use Windows recovery or a repair installation

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, multiple applications fail, and System Restore does not help, use Windows recovery options.

Before proceeding:

  • Back up important personal files.
  • Confirm your Windows edition and architecture.
  • Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
  • Record application installers and license information.

Open Settings, select System, then Recovery. Windows 11 may provide options such as Reset this PC or recovery through Windows Update. Windows 10 places recovery options under Update & Security, then Recovery.

A repair installation or in-place repair is preferable when available because it can reinstall Windows components while preserving personal files and applications, depending on the method and choices shown. Read every screen carefully. If the available option will remove applications or personal files, stop and create a backup before continuing.

If SFC and DISM report no problem

A clean SFC and DISM result does not prove that every application copy of dnsapi.dll is healthy. Check these possibilities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Only one program fails: repair, verify, or reinstall that program.
  2. The file exists but will not load: suspect corruption, wrong architecture, a blocked file, or a missing dependency.
  3. The error appears after an application update: roll back or reinstall that application.
  4. A launcher reports the error: use its Verify or Repair function.
  5. The file is outside the Windows directories: inspect its signature and scan for malware.
  6. Only one user account is affected: test the program from another local Windows profile. This can reveal a damaged profile, per-user installation, or altered environment.
  7. Wine or another compatibility layer reports it: troubleshoot that layer’s Windows API support rather than replacing the native Windows file.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download dnsapi.dll from a generic DLL library or copy it from another computer. That approach can fail because the replacement may have:

  • Malware or an unwanted modification
  • The wrong Windows release
  • The wrong language or servicing state
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Missing dependent files
  • No valid relationship to the application that is failing

It can also conceal the original problem, such as a damaged component store, incomplete application update, antivirus quarantine, or DLL hijacking.

Use these safer sources instead:

  • Windows Update
  • DISM and SFC
  • The affected program’s official Repair, Verify, or reinstall process
  • The computer or device manufacturer’s official driver support
  • Microsoft Windows recovery tools

Quick diagnostic checklist

Work through this order:

  1. Does one program fail, or do several programs fail?
  2. Did the issue begin after an update, installation, cleanup, antivirus action, or restore?
  3. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  4. Run elevated DISM.
  5. Run sfc /scannow.
  6. Repair or verify the affected application.
  7. Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  8. Check Windows Security Protection History.
  9. Inspect suspicious copies outside System32 and SysWOW64.
  10. Use Device Manager only when a driver change is a plausible trigger.
  11. Try System Restore if a suitable restore point predates the problem.
  12. Consider a Windows repair installation if several programs remain affected.

Frequently asked questions

Is dnsapi.dll safe?

The genuine Windows component is safe and is published by Microsoft. A file with the same name in an application folder is not automatically genuine, so check its location, signature, and Windows Security results.

Is dnsapi.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It is the Windows DNS Client API library. It is not normally installed by Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++ to fix it?

Only if the complete error also names a Visual C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Visual C++ Redistributables do not normally supply dnsapi.dll.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

No. dnsapi.dll is not normally repaired through COM registration. Run DISM and SFC or repair the affected application instead.

Why does Windows work while one game fails?

The game may have a damaged installation, an incomplete update, a private DLL copy, a launcher problem, or an architecture mismatch. Verify the game files before modifying Windows.

Can I copy the file from SysWOW64 to System32?

No. Those directories serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Copying between them can create a worse mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the file was quarantined?

Review Protection History, confirm the detection, and scan the system. Do not restore it automatically. Reinstall the affected application if the quarantined file was inside that application’s folder.

Can SFC repair a game’s copy?

Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Use the game launcher’s Verify or Repair function for a private game copy.

Does the error mean Windows is infected?

Not by itself. However, Microsoft has documented malware that can modify dnsapi.dll to redirect network traffic. A suspicious file location, antivirus detection, or unexpected network behavior warrants a full security investigation.
