One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchem2v.dll is a historical Nero/Ahead MPEG-2 video component, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows reports that em2v.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Nero product, Nero-based OEM suite, or other application that originally installed it.
Do not download a random copy of em2v.dll and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. The correct file can vary between Nero generations and OEM bundles, and a replacement from an untrusted source may be malicious, incompatible, or unable to fix the underlying installation.

What is em2v.dll
The internal name of the file is em2v. Historical Nero inventories describe it as an MPEG-2 video decoder or related video codec component. Some older listings use encoder terminology, so the safest description is a Nero MPEG-2 video component.
Ahead Software AG developed the component. Ahead later changed its name to Nero AG. The file was associated with older Nero multimedia products, Nero Vision and Nero Video components, Nero OEM packages, and some third-party software bundles that embedded Nero technology.

Possible parent programs include:
- Older Nero suites
- Nero Vision or Nero Video
- Nero OEM editions supplied with optical drives or computers
- Device software containing bundled Nero components
- Some historical HTC Sync Manager installations
The HTC association does not mean every HTC Sync Manager release contains this file. The same caution applies to OEM software: the presence of em2v.dll depends on the product generation and bundle.
Typical application-owned locations include:
%CommonProgramFiles%AheadDSFilterem2v.dll
It may also be stored in a Nero installation folder or inside the installation directory of an OEM application.
Windows does not document em2v.dll as one of its own components. A 32-bit program can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, but that does not make the file a Windows system DLL.
Error messages caused by em2v.dll
The wording depends on the program and Windows loader. You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because em2v.dll was not found.”
- “The file em2v.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: em2v.dll.”
- “em2v.dll not found.”
- “Cannot find em2v.dll.”
- “em2v.dll error loading.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in em2v.dll.”
- “em2v.dll access violation.”
- “Cannot register em2v.dll.”
The error may appear when the parent program starts, imports video, previews MPEG-2 content, converts video, authors a DVD, or begins a burning workflow.
Before fixing it, identify the parent program
Restoring the right application is more important than finding a file with the same name.
Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and surrounding text. It may identify Nero, an OEM disc utility, a video editor, or another bundled program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read Target and Start in.
- Note the program folder and executable name.
If the path includes Nero, Ahead, or an OEM product name, that is probably the parent application.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for
Nero,Vision,Video, the computer manufacturer, or the optical-drive manufacturer. - Select the matching application and choose Advanced options if available.
- Look for Repair or Reset.
Not every traditional desktop program provides these buttons. If they are absent, use the program’s own installer or uninstall and reinstall it.
Search without downloading anything
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
em2v.dll. - Right-click any result and select Open file location.
- Record the folder path.
A file under an old Nero or OEM application directory is more meaningful than a file with the same name in an unrelated folder. Do not assume that every em2v.dll found on disk is legitimate. Check the parent product, location, digital signature, and antivirus history.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Nero or OEM application

If the program has a Repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Nero or OEM application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the affected program and test the same action that previously failed.
If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the application may lose its settings. A traditional Nero installation may not provide Windows repair controls, in which case use its installer instead.
Reinstall a Nero product
- Write down the exact Nero product and edition shown in Installed apps or the program’s About screen.
- Obtain the matching installer from Nero’s official support download page.
- For Nero 2019 and earlier, locate the product serial number.
- For Nero 2020 and later, have the associated Nero account credentials available where required.
- Uninstall the affected Nero product from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer.
- Choose the same product components that were previously installed, especially video, MPEG-2, authoring, or burning features.
- Restart again.
- Test the application.
A current installer may not restore a legacy em2v.dll. Newer Nero products can use newer video implementations and may no longer use this historical filename. If an old installation specifically requires this component, use the original Nero installer or the original OEM recovery media rather than mixing files from another release.
Reinstall an OEM application
If the program came with a computer, DVD writer, scanner, camera, or other device:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Identify the manufacturer and product model.
- Use the manufacturer’s official support or recovery media.
- Download the complete matching application or suite.
- Uninstall the damaged OEM program.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the OEM package again.
- Test the feature that produced the error.
Do not install a generic Nero component over an OEM application. The OEM package may contain a specifically matched build.
Clean up failed Nero remnants
If installation fails, the installer reports that an older Nero version is still present, or the same error returns after reinstalling, use Nero’s official FirstAidKit procedure. It is intended to remove traces of previous Nero installations that can block a clean setup.
Use it only when normal uninstall and reinstall leave conflicts. After running the cleanup procedure:
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Nero or OEM package.
- Restart again.
- Test the affected application.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: About 5 to 15 minutes.
Antivirus software can quarantine or delete an application component. This is a possible cause, but do not restore an unknown DLL merely because an error mentions it.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that names
em2v.dll. - Check the original file path, detection reason, and associated application.
- Restore the file only if the parent Nero or OEM installation is trusted and the path is consistent with that product.
- If Windows Security identifies the file as malicious or the location is suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- Run a full scan.
- Reinstall the parent application from its official installer.
If antivirus protection blocks the application immediately after reinstalling, do not repeatedly disable protection. Check the vendor’s support guidance, update the security software, and contact the application vendor if a trusted signed installation is being detected incorrectly.
Fix 3: Install the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime only for a runtime error
Time needed: About 5 to 15 minutes.
Visual C++ Redistributable packages do not replace or repair em2v.dll. They are relevant only when the error also names a Microsoft runtime, such as:
MSVCP140.dllVCRUNTIME140.dllapi-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll
For an older 32-bit Nero application, the x86 package is normally the relevant package, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Open Microsoft’s official Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page.
- Download the x86 package when the affected Nero or OEM program is 32-bit.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select Install, or Repair if the package is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the parent application again.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Nero program. Installing only the x64 runtime does not satisfy every dependency required by an x86 application. Install x64 as well only when another 64-bit application requires it.
If the message names only em2v.dll, return to the Nero or OEM reinstall steps rather than repeatedly reinstalling Visual C++.

Fix 4: Confirm the file architecture and location
Time needed: About 10 minutes.
Older Nero components were commonly 32-bit. A 32-bit application should load its own DLL from its application directory or an appropriate application component folder. It should not require you to place that DLL in a Windows system directory.
Check the installation path:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open Shortcut.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the program’s own component folders.
- Compare that path with the location named in the error or found during your search.
Do not copy the file between System32, SysWOW64, Nero folders, and OEM folders. A DLL with the same filename can belong to a different build and cause entry-point or compatibility errors.
Do not use regsvr32 by default. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A codec or runtime component may not provide that function. If you run it anyway, Windows may report that the module loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not repair the application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation explicitly instructs you to register that exact file with that exact command. There is no verified general instruction requiring em2v.dll registration.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall related device drivers
Time needed: About 10 to 25 minutes.
A graphics, optical-drive, or capture-device driver does not normally restore em2v.dll, but a driver change can expose failures in old video software. This step is useful when the error began after a device update, cleanup utility, or driver removal.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, if present.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device related to the failed workflow.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver to search automatically, or install the driver supplied by the computer or device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Nero or OEM application.
If the failure started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Do not remove an unknown device unless you have its official driver package ready.
When manually hunting through device pages and driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version driver installation is optional, and reinstalling the Nero or OEM application remains the definitive fix for a missing em2v.dll.
Windows Features are not normally involved in restoring this file. Enabling older media features or legacy components will not recreate an application-owned Nero DLL unless the parent program specifically requires that Windows feature.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Time needed: About 15 to 45 minutes.
Use this step when several unrelated programs are failing, Windows updates are damaged, or system files are reporting corruption. DISM and SFC do not directly replace a third-party Nero DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the parent application.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates and retry, or use Microsoft’s documented repair guidance. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart before testing. If both commands complete without finding problems, focus on reinstalling Nero or the OEM program.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely repairs an application-owned DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention, while its full-version repair is optional; for this file, reinstalling the program that installed it remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: About 20 to 60 minutes.
System Restore can help if em2v.dll worked before a cleanup utility, update, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected program.
System Restore does not reliably restore every application file or recreate a valid Nero installation. If the error remains, reinstall the parent program.
Common causes and the appropriate response
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete Nero installation or uninstall | Repair or reinstall the exact Nero product |
| Old Nero files conflicting with a new installation | Use Nero FirstAidKit, restart, then reinstall |
| OEM package was removed or partially installed | Restore the complete OEM application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history and reinstall if uncertain |
| Wrong DLL copied from elsewhere | Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the parent program |
| Missing Microsoft runtime | Install the appropriate official Visual C++ package |
| Architecture mismatch | Use the matching 32-bit application package and dependencies |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Obsolete application no longer works correctly | Use System Restore or replace the application |
Why random DLL downloads fail
A standalone download may have:
- The wrong Nero generation
- The wrong OEM build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependent files
- Altered or malicious content
- No valid relationship to the application requesting it
Even if Windows accepts the copied file, the program may then show an entry-point error, crash during MPEG-2 preview, or fail during DVD authoring. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create conflicts for unrelated software.

Collect these details before contacting Nero or OEM support:
- The exact application name and edition

- Whether antivirus quarantined the file
- Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or driver change

If the application is very old, a current Windows installation may no longer support it reliably. Do not assume that Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility is guaranteed merely because the program installs. When the original installer cannot be obtained and every repair fails, replacing the obsolete Nero-based application is safer than maintaining a mismatched DLL.
FAQ
Is em2v.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Ahead Software and Nero multimedia software.
Can I download em2v.dll separately?
Do not use a random DLL download. Restore it through the Nero or OEM installer that matches the affected program.
Should I copy em2v.dll to System32?
No. Keep an application-owned DLL with its parent program unless the vendor gives a specific alternative instruction.
Should I register em2v.dll with regsvr32?
Not by default. Codec and runtime DLLs may not expose DllRegisterServer, and registration will not repair a damaged Nero installation.
Will Visual C++ fix em2v.dll?
Only if the error separately names a missing Microsoft runtime. Visual C++ does not replace em2v.dll.
Why does a 32-bit Nero program run on 64-bit Windows?
64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit desktop applications. The application still needs its 32-bit DLLs and normally the x86 version of any required runtime.
