dnscmmc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the DNS Client MMC Snap-in DLL. If Windows says dnscmmc.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the failure usually involves Microsoft Management Console, DNS Manager, or the Windows DNS administration tools, not a game or ordinary third-party application.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The safe fix is to restore Windows component files and, when DNS management is absent, reinstall RSAT: DNS Server Tools.

Rsat.Dns.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Historical public metadata lists dnscmmc.dll with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era builds. Those historical versions are not a universal version list for every current Windows installation.
On 64-bit Windows, a valid copy may be found in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite the names, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries. Do not swap files between these folders manually.
First, identify what is failing
The exact message varies by Windows version and by the program invoking the DLL. Typical wording includes:

Before repairing anything, note whether the error appears when you:
- Open
dnsmgmt.msc - Launch another MMC console
- Install or remove RSAT
- Start a Windows administrative utility
- Log in after Windows Update or system cleanup
If a particular game or unrelated application displays the message, that does not prove the game owns the file. It may be starting an administrative component indirectly, or Windows may be reporting a broader component problem.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not immediately require it.
- Try opening
dnsmgmt.mscagain.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not remove system files manually. Continue with the component repair steps below.
Fix 2: Install RSAT: DNS Server Tools
Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus download time
On Windows client editions, DNS management may not be installed until you add the relevant RSAT capability. A missing dnsmgmt.msc or DNS Server Tools entry without a specific DLL error often means the feature is absent rather than that the DLL itself is damaged.
Install through Settings
- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System > Optional features.
- In Windows 10, open Apps > Optional features.
- Select View features or Add a feature.
- Search for RSAT: DNS Server Tools.
- Select it and click Next.
- Click Install.
- Wait for installation to complete.
- Open Start, type
dnsmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
If DNS Manager opens, the missing management feature was the cause.
Install with PowerShell
Open Windows PowerShell or Terminal as administrator and run:

Confirm that the DNS capability is listed, then install it:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.Dns.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Restart Windows if prompted and test dnsmgmt.msc again.
If the command fails, the Windows edition, update state, network connection, or component store may be preventing Feature on Demand installation. Continue with DISM and SFC, then retry.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the primary supported repair sequence when dnscmmc.dll is missing or corrupted. Run DISM first because it repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original operation again.
SFC may report that it repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair everything. If it cannot complete, restart and run the commands again. If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching Windows installation source only when you have one that corresponds closely to the installed Windows version:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example source with the real path to a suitable repair source. Do not guess the path or use an unrelated Windows image.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to see which repair changed the system. It is optional, and reinstalling RSAT remains the definitive fix when the DNS tools themselves are absent.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software or a malware cleanup may quarantine a system file. This is only one possible cause, so do not disable protection or restore the file blindly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Expand an entry that appears to involve
dnscmmc.dll. - Check its reported path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined item only if you have confirmed that it is the legitimate Microsoft file, its location is appropriate, and the computer is clean. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can put it back on the device. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and run a full Windows Security scan.
After a legitimate restore, run DISM and SFC, restart, and test DNS Manager. If the file is quarantined again, treat that as a security issue rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 5: Verify the file path, signature, and architecture
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A file can exist while Windows still refuses to load it. Possible reasons include a mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit copy, invalid signature, missing dependency, or damaged component registration.

Find copies of the file
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
where /r %windir% dnscmmc.dll
Review the paths carefully. A copy in an unexpected application folder should not automatically be trusted.

- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
You can also inspect a file with PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32dnscmmc.dll"
Use the corresponding SysWOW64 path when checking the 32-bit copy. An invalid or missing signature is a reason to stop and repair Windows rather than copy in a replacement.
Do not mix architectures
On 64-bit Windows, do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. Historical metadata shows both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, but the correct file depends on the Windows installation and the component being serviced. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and RSAT are the safe ways to restore the matching version.
Fix 6: Update related drivers only when the wider problem involves hardware
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
dnscmmc.dll is not a device driver, and Device Manager does not normally repair this DLL. Use this step only if DNS Manager errors began alongside network-adapter problems, missing hardware, or a failed driver update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the adapter is malfunctioning, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, restart, and allow Windows to reinstall it.
Avoid changing drivers solely because dnscmmc.dll appears in an error. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific versions involved; driver installation through its full version is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling RSAT.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
System Restore is appropriate if the error began after an update, feature removal, cleanup operation, driver installation, or another recent system modification.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and updates. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows repair or an in-place repair installation.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the registration entry points required by that type of component. It is not a universal command for restoring missing, corrupted, or incompatible DLL files.
Some public metadata for particular dnscmmc.dll builds reports registration-related exports, but Microsoft does not make manual registration the normal repair procedure for this file. Do not run:
regsvr32 dnscmmc.dll
as a first response. It cannot recreate a missing file, repair a damaged component store, fix a wrong-architecture copy, or install RSAT. Use it only if Microsoft or an administrator with a specific diagnostic reason instructs you to register a verified matching copy.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone DLL downloaded from an unofficial source may be:
- The wrong Windows-era version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Unsigned or modified
- Missing its matching manifest or dependencies
- Incompatible with the installed component store
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can create a second problem without repairing the original one. The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, Optional Features, RSAT, System Restore, or an official Windows repair installation.
