No. Only the person who owns the Realm needs a Realms subscription. Invited players can join that Realm without buying their own Realms subscription, as long as they have Minecraft in the matching edition and meet any separate online-play requirements for their platform.
Who pays for a Minecraft Realm?
The host pays for the Realm subscription, which keeps the shared world available. Invited friends do not need their own subscription to play. Minecraft’s Realms FAQ says members do not need to purchase a Realms subscription to join, and its Bedrock Realm setup guide likewise describes invited friends as playing for free.
Joining for free means no additional Realms subscription is required; it does not mean every aspect of online play is necessarily free. Players still need access to Minecraft and an account that can join the Realm.
What invitees need to join
- Minecraft in the right edition: Java Realms are for Java Edition players, and Bedrock Realms are for Bedrock players. Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another’s Realms. See Minecraft’s edition and Realms information.
- An invitation or join code: The Realm owner must invite the player or provide the appropriate join code. Minecraft Help explains how to join a Java Edition Realm.
- Console online access, where required: Console players may need an active subscription to their console’s network service to play online. That is separate from a Realms subscription; check the current requirements for the player’s console and account.
Does the host have to be online?
No. A Realm is a subscription-based online service, so invited members can join even when the host is offline. Minecraft Help explicitly notes that a player joining a Java Realm does not need a Realms subscription and can join when the host is not online: Minecraft Help’s Java joining guide.

How many people can play at once?
The plan determines how many players can be in the Realm at the same time; this is different from how many friends the owner can invite. Minecraft’s current Realms page lists these simultaneous-player limits:
| Plan | Simultaneous players |
|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | Owner plus two players |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | Owner plus ten players |
| Java Realms | Owner plus ten players |
When a Realm is full, another invited player may need to wait for a spot to open. The limit is about simultaneous play, not a requirement for every invitee to pay.
