For a straightforward ranged Gloom Stalker under the 2014 rules, make Dexterity your highest ability score, Wisdom your next priority, and choose the Archery Fighting Style. Build around stealth, darkness, and good positioning rather than assuming the subclass makes you an assassin or universally invisible. This guide separates that 2014 build from the revised 2024 version, whose signature opening-round feature works differently.
Rules note: D&D Beyond’s March 2, 2026 terminology note calls the 2014 rules “5e” and the updated 2024 rules “5.5e”; both remain supported and compatible. The subclass is in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything for 2014 rules and the 2024 Player’s Handbook for the revised rules. Choose one version at your table: do not combine their Gloom Stalker features or build advice. D&D Beyond’s comparison explains the terminology and changes.
Best 2014 Gloom Stalker build at a glance
- Ability priorities: Dexterity first, Wisdom second, with Constitution kept useful for survivability.
- Default combat role: ranged attacker using the Archery Fighting Style.
- Core plan: find useful sight lines, use stealth and darkness tactically, and capitalize on the 2014 subclass’s opening-turn strengths.
- Spell plan: choose spells with concentration in mind; only one concentration spell can be active at a time.
- Multiclassing: optional, not a requirement for the subclass to work.
This is a reliable baseline, not a universal damage ranking. The best choices depend on campaign level, allowed books, encounter conditions, and whether you prefer ranged combat, dual wielding, exploration, or burst damage. D&D Beyond’s 2014-oriented Gloom Stalker guide supports the Dexterity/Wisdom priorities and Archery recommendation.
How to build the 2014 Gloom Stalker
Prioritize Dexterity, then Wisdom
Dexterity supports ranged and finesse attacks as well as Armor Class, so it is the clearest first priority for the ranged baseline. Wisdom improves ranger features and spell save DC, making it the next priority. Keep Constitution at a level that suits your campaign’s survivability demands. The cited guide supports this ordering but does not establish one universally best point-buy array or ability-score spread.

Choose a Fighting Style that matches your concept
For a ranged build, Archery is the guide’s leading general recommendation. Two-Weapon Fighting is a reasonable alternative if you want a dual-wielding character. The choice should follow the character you want to play; neither the style nor a specific weapon is established as universally best across campaigns.
Pick spells around concentration and action demands
Hunter’s Mark, Ensnaring Strike, Hail of Thorns, and Zephyr Strike are among the offense options named in the 2014 guide. They are not a list to stack together: a character can maintain only one concentration spell at a time, so activating one means giving up another concentration effect. Weigh that cost against the encounter, your party’s needs, and how you expect to use your turn.

Consider the spell’s action and bonus-action demands as well as its damage or control effect. An option that sounds strong in isolation may compete with another thing you want to do that turn. Use the rules text for your chosen spell and edition at the table.
Use Umbral Sight tactically
The 2014 Gloom Stalker’s Umbral Sight rewards attention to lighting and enemy senses. In total darkness, it helps against creatures that rely on darkvision; it is not blanket invisibility, does not apply just because an area is dimly lit, and does not conceal you from every creature. Look for terrain and sight lines where the feature’s specific conditions matter rather than assuming it works in every fight. The official guide describes the subclass’s darkness-facing identity, while its Ranger material provides the relevant class context.

Keep multiclassing optional
You do not need a rogue or fighter dip to make a Gloom Stalker function. D&D Beyond’s guide discusses bard or rogue multiclassing as ways to improve social skills, but does not establish a universally superior split or level-by-level progression. Decide on multiclassing only after weighing what the campaign needs and what you would give up from continued ranger progression.
What changes under the 2024 rules?
The revised subclass changes the key opening-attack feature, so the 2014 burst-attack approach does not transfer directly. D&D Beyond’s official comparison says the 2024 Dread Ambusher no longer grants an extra attack in round one; instead, it adds limited-use damage to a weapon hit. A secondary rules transcription gives the revised Dreadful Strike as 2d6 Psychic damage once per turn, usable a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier per Long Rest, and says the character adds Wisdom to initiative. Check the licensed rulebook at your table for the exact wording.

The 2024 Ranger prepares spells using Wisdom and gains Extra Attack at level 5. Those rules give you progression anchors, but the cited material does not establish one best feat sequence, weapon mastery combination, or multiclass progression for every campaign. For the class’s updated rules, consult D&D Beyond’s Ranger page. For the revised subclass’s feature details, see the AideDD 2024 Ranger transcription and verify them against your licensed rulebook.
