Yes, birds appear to survive in the world of Splatoon—but Nintendo’s official lore does not spell out which bird species remain. The setting says the catastrophe that ended humanity wiped out “almost all other land-dwelling creatures,” not every animal.
What Nintendo’s lore says about animal survival
Nintendo’s official Splatoon Base story says rising seas eventually annihilated humans along with “almost all other land-dwelling creatures.” The wording leaves room for some land animals to survive, but it does not identify birds—or give a list of surviving species.
The setting also includes unusual survival stories: Inklings are squid that can take humanoid form, and Judd’s owner put the cat in a cryogenic capsule around the time humans went extinct. Those details show that survival in this world is not limited to a straightforward account of which animals lived or died; they do not establish the fate of any particular bird.
Does a Splatoon bird joke prove birds are extinct?
No. In a March 1, 2024 Nintendo announcement, a playful line asks, “Is it a bird? A kite?” before revealing, “Oh, wait—it’s a cephalopod?!” The joke identifies what is soaring as a cephalopod; it is not a definitive statement about whether ordinary birds exist in the setting.

What can we conclude?
- Birds are reasonably understood to survive or be represented in the Splatoon world.
- Nintendo’s official lore does not provide a bird-specific survival catalogue, species list, or population count.
- The extinction account says “almost all other land-dwelling creatures,” so it should not be paraphrased as the extinction of all animals.
