In the D&D 5e option attributed to the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide, a Dungeon Master may allow a Winged tiefling: it has bat-like wings and a 30-foot flying speed while not wearing heavy armor. The choice replaces Infernal Legacy, rather than adding flight on top of it.
How the Winged tiefling option works
The Winged trait appears among optional tiefling variants in a secondary transcription of the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide (SCAG). The transcription states that a Dungeon Master may permit the variants; it also says Devil’s Tongue, Hellfire, and Winged are mutually exclusive.
Its Winged trait reads: “You have bat-like wings sprouting from your shoulders. You have a flying speed of 30 feet while you aren’t wearing heavy armor. This trait replaces the Infernal Legacy trait.” Read the Winged tiefling transcription.
What the rule means at the table
- Appearance: the option specifies bat-like wings, not feathered wings.
- Flight: the character’s flying speed is 30 feet, but the trait grants it only while the character is not wearing heavy armor.
- Trade-off: choosing Winged replaces Infernal Legacy; it is not an extra trait stacked with it.
- Permission: the text leaves use of the variant to the Dungeon Master. Ask whether it is allowed in the campaign and which character options the table uses.
Are wings a standard tiefling trait?
No. The current D&D Beyond tiefling species entry describes tiefling legacies and common physical features without presenting wings as a general trait. That is consistent with treating flight as a particular optional 5e variant, not something every tiefling can do.

This comparison is about the current species entry and the SCAG variant transcription; it does not establish what every edition, setting, or campaign permits. D&D Beyond also labels its legacy tiefling page as not reflecting the latest rules and lore.
What to check before making one
Because the available wording here is a community transcription rather than the book itself, consult your own SCAG copy if exact wording, errata, or a particular printing matters. The transcription does not establish a verified page number. For ordinary character creation, confirm with the DM that the variant is allowed and that replacing Infernal Legacy fits the character rules being used.
