Sometimes, but there is no catalog-wide guarantee. Support is decided one game at a time. Ikaruga is a clearly documented case: its Steam listing advertises local two-player play, shared or split-screen multiplayer, and support for an Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse. Other collections make broader claims about playing with a friend or using a gamepad without identifying controller models or explaining how two players are assigned.
If you want couch co-op with two current controllers, treat the individual Steam page and its controller notes as the authority. A generic “controller support” label does not prove that every modern gamepad, two-device setup or multiplayer mode will work automatically.

What the official listings actually confirm
“Classic arcade shooter” covers ports, compilations and re-releases made by different publishers. Their multiplayer terminology is not consistent, so the safest answer comes from the exact product page rather than the genre label. The documented examples below show why.

| Steam title or collection | Local-play wording | Controller wording | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ikaruga (released February 18, 2014) | The listing says “2 Players game (Local),” identifies multiplayer and shared/split-screen play, and says two players can use one controller in Double Play Mode. | Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse are named. | It does not specifically guarantee every current-generation gamepad or explain whether two separate controllers are required or supported for every mode. |
| Contra Anniversary Collection | Konami describes the collection as playable alone or with a friend and lists Steam as a platform. | No controller model or detailed per-title input matrix is given in the cited description. | The description does not establish local versus online behavior for each included game, nor how many physical controllers a title accepts. |
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Steam’s support listing reports shared/split-screen co-op. | A gamepad or controller is recommended, without a named model. | Compatibility with a particular modern controller and dual-controller assignment are not identified. |
“Shared/split-screen” is useful evidence of simultaneous local play, but it is not the same as a promise that every game in a collection has the same mode. A collection page can summarize several games while individual titles retain different rules.

Ikaruga: the clearest documented case
What its listing promises
The official Steam listing for Ikaruga explicitly states “2 Players game (Local)” and describes a Double Play Mode in which two players can play with one controller. It also identifies shared or split-screen multiplayer. Those statements establish that the port was designed for local, same-machine two-player use; they are not merely an online or remote-play claim.
The same page names an Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse. That is a concrete disclosure of the devices the listing chose to support. It should be read narrowly: it confirms that input family, not every gamepad released since the port launched.
One controller is a special mode, not proof of two-controller support
Double Play Mode matters if you have one pad, but it does not answer a different question: whether two separate modern controllers can be assigned to Player 1 and Player 2. The listing’s one-controller statement should not be converted into a promise about two-device behavior. Check the game’s current controller configuration and test the exact hardware you plan to use.
What the 2014 release date means
Ikaruga arrived on Steam on February 18, 2014. A controller identified on a listing from that era is a useful compatibility reference, not a guarantee that a later USB or Bluetooth device will be recognized natively. Steam’s input layer may offer additional configuration, but the store disclosure itself does not certify those newer devices.

What the collection pages do—and do not—tell you
Contra Anniversary Collection
Konami’s description says the collection can be played alone or with a friend and lists Steam as one of its platforms. That is publisher-level evidence that friend play is part of the product’s intended experience. The cited wording does not provide a controller-model list, a per-game multiplayer table, or a statement that every included title supports local two-player play on one PC.
When evaluating this collection, open the Steam page for the exact edition and look for a local, shared-screen or split-screen feature. Do not infer the input arrangement from the franchise’s arcade history or from another entry in the collection.
Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection
Steam’s support information for this collection includes shared/split-screen co-op and recommends a gamepad or controller. That is stronger evidence for same-screen cooperative play than a bare “multiplayer” tag, but it still does not name a current controller model. The recommendation tells you the intended input type; it does not establish that two particular Bluetooth pads will be detected independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Modern controller support” is not one feature
Store pages use several levels of precision. A named device, such as the Xbox 360 controller on Ikaruga‘s listing, is more informative than a generic “gamepad” label. A generic label confirms an input category but leaves the operating system, connection method, button prompts and player assignment unresolved.

There are four separate questions to keep apart:
- Detection: Does Steam or the game see the device at all?
- Mapping: Are buttons and sticks assigned to the expected actions?
- Player separation: Can two physical devices be assigned to different players?
- Mode availability: Does the title offer local simultaneous play rather than online, remote or alternating play?
A port can pass the first question and fail the third. It can also support local multiplayer while accepting only one controller, as the documented one-controller mode in Ikaruga illustrates. Therefore, “works with a controller” and “supports local co-op with two modern controllers” are not interchangeable claims.
How to check a Steam port before buying
Use this checklist for each individual game, even when it belongs to a collection.
- Read the Features section. Look specifically for “Local,” “Shared/Split Screen,” or “Co-op.” A plain “Multiplayer” label is too vague to establish couch play.
- Identify the number of players. Confirm whether the page says two players, multiple players, or only “play with a friend.” If no number is stated, treat the capacity as unconfirmed.
- Separate local from online language. “Online co-op,” “Remote Play,” and “multiplayer” do not by themselves prove that both people can play on the same PC.
- Read the controller disclosure literally. Note whether the page names a model, says only “gamepad/controller,” or lists keyboard and mouse instead. Do not expand a named compatibility statement to unrelated devices.
- Look for a one-controller or shared-input mode. This can be a practical fallback, but it is different from two independent controllers.
- Check the game’s current Steam controller settings. Steam may expose a per-game input configuration; review it before launching and select the appropriate device layout if available.
- Plan a test session. Connect the intended devices, start the game, enter its local multiplayer menu and verify that each player receives separate input. If you are buying for a group, test before the return window closes.
Setting up local play with two controllers
The exact menus differ by port, but a disciplined setup avoids most avoidable confusion.
- Connect both controllers before opening the game. Wired devices remove one variable; wireless devices should be paired and charged.
- Confirm that Steam lists both devices in its controller configuration area. If only one appears, solve detection before changing in-game bindings.
- Open the game’s local or multiplayer option and watch which device controls the first player. Press a button on the second controller only when the game asks for the next player to join.
- If both pads move the same character, inspect the per-game layout and disable any shared-input arrangement that is not intended. Reassign each device to a distinct player when the port exposes that option.
- Check the game’s button prompts. A controller may function while displaying a different button alphabet or layout; that is a usability issue, not proof that multiplayer is unsupported.
- Run a short match or stage with both players. Verify movement, firing, pause behavior and the ability to continue after a player loses a life, because some ports handle these functions differently.
For Ikaruga, the documented one-controller Double Play Mode gives you a fallback if a second device is not recognized. For collections with only a generic gamepad recommendation, do not assume that fallback exists unless the title’s own instructions describe it.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely interpretation | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Steam sees one controller, not two. | The operating system or Steam input layer has not exposed both devices. | Reconnect the missing device, close other remapping software, then revisit the per-game controller configuration. |
| Both controllers move Player 1. | The port is using a shared layout or has not assigned Player 2. | Enter the local multiplayer screen, select the second player, and inspect whether separate assignments are available. |
| The game accepts keyboard input but ignores a modern pad. | The store’s named or generic controller statement may not cover that device. | Try the game’s Steam Input profile if offered; otherwise use the explicitly listed controller type or keyboard and mouse. |
| A collection shows multiplayer, but no local option appears. | The collection-level description may not apply identically to the selected title. | Check that game’s own manual, menu and Steam feature list rather than relying on the collection summary. |
| Buttons work but prompts are confusing. | Input is being translated through a different controller layout. | Choose a matching layout or remap controls, then test every action in a safe area. |
These checks cannot create a mode the port does not implement. If the page never confirms local play, the absence of a working menu is evidence to treat the feature as unverified rather than as a setup mistake.
How to choose between ports
For a couch-gaming purchase, rank evidence in this order:
- Explicit local wording. “2 Players game (Local)” is stronger than an unqualified multiplayer tag.
- Simultaneous-play wording. Shared or split-screen indicates that players are intended to act on the same machine at once.
- Input specificity. A named controller type gives you a concrete reference point; “gamepad” leaves more testing to you.
- Player-device clarity. Prefer a page or manual that states whether players use separate controllers or a shared one.
- Title-level detail. In a compilation, verify the particular game you want to play, not only the collection’s headline features.
This framework also explains why the three documented examples cannot be treated as interchangeable. Ikaruga provides the most precise local-player and input disclosure. Contra Anniversary Collection confirms the idea of playing with a friend but leaves the technical arrangement open. Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection identifies shared/split-screen co-op and recommends a controller while leaving model compatibility unspecified.

Can you play local co-op with two controllers?
Yes, but only when the individual port supports local simultaneous play and recognizes two player inputs. The available documentation confirms local two-player play for Ikaruga, yet its explicit one-controller mode means the listing alone does not prove a two-controller setup. The collection pages establish friend play or shared/split-screen co-op at a broad level, but they do not provide a universal dual-controller guarantee.
For any unverified title, the responsible answer is conditional: check the exact Steam feature list, inspect the controller settings, and test both devices. A current controller may work through Steam’s configuration layer, but that outcome is title- and setup-dependent rather than guaranteed by the word “multiplayer.”
