For most PC gamers, leave NVIDIA shader caching enabled and choose a finite cache limit that fits both your game library and your free disk space. NVIDIA does not publish one universally optimal size. A larger limit can reduce eviction when you rotate through demanding games, but Unlimited is not proven to deliver higher frame rates than a sufficiently large finite limit.
The practical goal is to keep compiled shaders available for reuse without allowing the cache to crowd the drive. A very small limit can cause older shaders to be removed while you still need them, contributing to gameplay stutter.

What NVIDIA shader caching does
Games use shaders to define how surfaces, lighting, particles and other visual effects are rendered. Before the graphics driver can use a shader, it may need to compile it for your specific game and hardware combination. NVIDIA describes shader compilation as a common cause of gameplay stuttering.
The shader cache stores those compiled shaders on your drive. When the same game needs them again, the driver can reuse the stored versions instead of compiling them from scratch. That is why leaving caching enabled is the sensible baseline for ordinary gaming.

Shader Cache Size controls the maximum disk space the NVIDIA driver may use for this stored data. It is a storage allowance, not a frame-rate setting. The Control Panel does not promise that selecting a larger number will increase FPS, reduce input latency or improve every game.
Which setting should you choose?
| Control Panel option | What it means | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Disabled | The driver does not retain compiled shaders for later reuse. | Only when you have a specific troubleshooting reason or deliberately do not want shader-cache storage. |
| 128 MB | A very small finite allowance; older entries can be evicted quickly as new shaders are stored. | Systems with severe space constraints and a small, undemanding game selection. |
| 256 MB | A small finite allowance. | A compact cache when disk space matters more than retaining shaders for many games. |
| 512 MB | A moderate finite allowance, but still potentially restrictive for several demanding games. | Players with limited free space who play a narrow selection. |
| 1 GB | A larger finite allowance. | A reasonable starting point for one or two demanding games; this is a practical inference, not an NVIDIA universal recommendation. |
| 5 GB | A substantially larger finite allowance. | Players who rotate through several games and have comfortable free space. |
| 10 GB | A large finite allowance. | A broad library of demanding games where avoiding frequent eviction is more important than minimizing the cache footprint. |
| 100 GB | A very large finite allowance. | Systems with abundant free space and a large rotating library. |
| Unlimited | No selected cache-size ceiling in the list. | Users willing to let the cache use available storage; it is an option, not a demonstrated performance upgrade. |
NVIDIA lists these choices in Control Panel: Disabled, Unlimited, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB and 100 GB. The exact list can vary with the installed software version.
The default recommendation
Use an enabled finite limit unless you have a clear reason to do otherwise. Pick a value large enough for the games you normally play, then leave enough free space for the operating system, game updates, saves and other applications. If you play only one or two games, a modest finite limit may be sufficient. If you regularly switch among many high-end games, move to a larger limit rather than relying on a very small cap.

Why there is no single best number
NVIDIA says game requirements vary substantially and that higher-end games may require several hundred megabytes of cache space. That statement explains why a 128 MB or 256 MB cap can be restrictive, but it does not establish a required size for every title. Different games can also use different shader sets, so the amount needed by one game is not a reliable capacity rule for another.
There is no dated comparative study in NVIDIA’s help reference that proves one listed value is fastest for every system. Treat the numbers as storage-capacity choices, not performance presets.
How to change Shader Cache Size
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- In the navigation pane, open Manage 3D settings.
- Locate Shader Cache Size in the settings list. NVIDIA identifies this control as having been introduced in Release 495.
- Select the desired value: Disabled, Unlimited, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB or 100 GB, depending on the choices shown by your installed driver.
- Apply the change using the Control Panel’s save or Apply control, then launch the game normally.
Change one variable at a time. If you are investigating stutter, record the original value before testing a larger finite limit so you can reverse the change.

Choosing a limit from your own gaming habits
If you mainly play one or two games
Start with an enabled finite value rather than Disabled. A 1 GB cap is a reasonable practical starting point for a small selection that includes demanding games because NVIDIA describes higher-end titles as potentially requiring several hundred megabytes. This is a rule of thumb, not a published optimum. If the drive is tight, you can try 512 MB, but watch for repeated compilation or stutter after the cache fills.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you rotate through many demanding games
Use a larger finite value such as 5 GB or 10 GB when the drive has room. The point is to reduce the likelihood that shaders from a recently played game are evicted when another title adds new entries. You do not need to jump to Unlimited merely because your library is large; a finite cap provides a predictable upper bound.
If disk space is the limiting factor
Choose the largest cap that does not crowd the drive. A cache limit is an allowance, and the driver may remove older shaders as it approaches that allowance. Reserving 100 GB for the cache is not sensible if the same drive needs that space for games or updates. A smaller enabled cache is usually preferable to disabling reuse altogether, provided it is not so small that eviction is constant.

If you have abundant free space
You can select 10 GB, 100 GB or Unlimited, depending on how much storage you are willing to make available. The larger choices reduce the chance of eviction as your library changes, but NVIDIA’s help page supplies no benchmark showing that Unlimited runs a game faster than a sufficiently large finite cap. Choose Unlimited for capacity convenience, not as an FPS tweak.

A cache that is too small can contribute to stutter. NVIDIA explains that, as the cache approaches its size limit, the driver removes older shaders to make room for newer ones. If it removes shaders you still use, the game may need to compile them again.
Recommended Free Tools
NVIDIA Control Panel Help states: “On approaching the size limit, the driver will remove older shaders from the cache to make space for newer shaders; setting a size limit too small may cause the driver to remove shaders you still make use of and cause game play stutters.”

This does not mean every stutter is a shader-cache problem. The supported cache-related pattern is repeated compilation after entries have been evicted, especially when the limit is unusually small. Raising the cap can address that particular mechanism, but the documentation does not claim it fixes all forms of hitching.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Check the current Shader Cache Size value in NVIDIA Control Panel.
- If it is Disabled or set to a very small cap, switch to an enabled finite value that better matches your library and available space.
- Run the affected game and note whether stutter is concentrated during the first run or continues on later runs.
- Play the same areas again on subsequent launches. Reuse should be possible when the relevant shaders remain cached; eviction can force compilation again.
- If increasing the limit does not change the symptom, do not assume the cache is the cause. The NVIDIA guidance establishes the eviction mechanism, not a universal diagnosis for every hitch.
What happens after a driver installation?
Installing a new NVIDIA driver clears the shader cache. The next time you start a game, shaders may have to be compiled again, so a first-run stutter after the installation can be temporary and expected.
Do not interpret that first post-update run as proof that the new cache setting is ineffective. The cache has been emptied by the driver installation, and it must be rebuilt as the game uses different effects and scenes. Later launches can reuse the newly compiled shaders until they are evicted or the cache is cleared again.

Disabled, a finite cap or Unlimited?
| Decision factor | Disabled | Finite limit | Unlimited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shader reuse on later runs | Not retained for later reuse. | Retained until entries are evicted at the cap. | Retained without a selected ceiling. |
| Eviction risk as the cache fills | There is no retained cache to reuse. | Depends on the limit and the games played. | Lower from a configured-size limit, subject to available storage. |
| Disk-space control | No cache allowance. | Predictable maximum chosen from the list. | Less predictable; storage use is not bounded by a selected finite number. |
| Evidence of a universal speed advantage | None. | None for any particular value. | NVIDIA provides no benchmark proving it is faster than a sufficiently large finite cap. |
For ordinary gaming, the finite-limit column is the balanced choice: it preserves reuse and gives you control over storage. Disabled sacrifices the cache’s intended benefit, while Unlimited trades a fixed ceiling for maximum capacity.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the smallest value automatically: saving a little disk space can increase eviction and force shaders to be compiled again.
- Assuming Unlimited means faster: NVIDIA lists it as an option but does not publish comparative results establishing a performance gain.
- Blaming every hitch on the cache: the documentation describes one stutter mechanism, not a complete troubleshooting guide for all games.
- Forgetting about driver updates: a new driver clears the cache, so the first run afterward may behave differently from later runs.
- Using a cap that crowds the drive: shader storage should not consume space needed for the games and system files that make the machine usable.
Bottom line for most gamers
Keep NVIDIA shader caching enabled. Select a finite limit that comfortably covers the games you play while preserving adequate free disk space. A small library can use a modest cap; a broad, demanding library benefits from a larger one such as 5 GB or 10 GB when storage allows. Use 100 GB or Unlimited only when the extra capacity is genuinely useful to you, not because it is a proven FPS upgrade. If stutter appears immediately after a driver installation, allow for cache rebuilding; if it persists and your cap is very small, increasing the limit is the most directly supported cache-related adjustment.
