Fat PS3s can fail, but there is not enough reliable evidence to say they all break easily or to give a trustworthy failure rate for Fat models specifically. A yellow light is a general hardware-failure warning, not a diagnosis of one particular part.
How reliable are Fat PS3s?
There is no verified, model-specific failure rate here that can tell you how likely a Fat PS3 is to fail. The only surfaced statistic is a secondary report attributing a 10% failure rate within two years to a 2009 SquareTrade study of PS3s overall. The original study was not retrieved, and the figure does not isolate Fat consoles, so it should not be treated as a forecast for an individual system. The secondary summary reporting the statistic.

Age and the condition of a particular console matter, but anecdotes and the overall statistic cannot establish how long a given Fat PS3 will last. There is also no reliable, source-backed comparison here that ranks Fat revisions by failure risk.
What does the yellow light mean?
The Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) is a generic hardware-error symptom. It does not identify the failed component or prove that overheating is the cause. The iFixit repair guide lists several possible faults, including overheating associated with dried thermal paste beneath the heat spreader (IHS), failed NEC/TOKIN capacitors, a board short, or a faulty RSX graphics processor. iFixit’s PS3 YLOD guide.

What should you do if a Fat PS3 has YLOD?
Have the fault diagnosed before choosing a repair. Thermal paste replacement, capacitor replacement, and RSX-related work address different possible causes; the light alone does not show which, if any, is appropriate. The guide does not establish one repair that works for every YLOD console or a routine maintenance interval.
Can Sony still repair an old Fat PS3?
Sony’s US warranty page describes one year of hardware coverage for the original purchaser from the original purchase date. For covered defects during that period, the stated remedy was repair or factory-recertified replacement at Sony’s option. That historical warranty language does not establish that a decades-old Fat PS3 is eligible for service today. For current service options, check PlayStation support for the country where the console was purchased; support information is region-specific. The official PS3 support page provides manuals and system-software update guidance. PlayStation notes that Blu-ray playback requires a renewed player encryption key obtained by updating system software. The PS3 User’s Guide directs owners to support contact information for their region.
