In Java Edition, torches can stop wither skeletons from spawning on nearby valid spawn blocks if they raise those blocks above light level 11. Mojang documents the Nether spawn range as light levels 0–11. A torch does not automatically protect an entire fortress: light fades with distance, so the light level at each potential spawn block matters.
How torches affect wither skeleton spawning in Java Edition
Mojang’s Java Edition Wild Update release notes state that wither skeletons spawn in the Nether at light levels 0 through 11. A valid spawn block at light level 12 or higher is therefore outside that documented range.
A torch emits light at level 14, and light decreases by one level per block of distance. The torch may raise nearby blocks above the threshold, but blocks farther away can remain dim enough for spawning. Check the light on the candidate spawn block rather than judging by how bright the area looks.
These values come from Mojang’s Java Edition release notes and the Minecraft Wiki’s light-level reference and torch guidance. The Wiki is community-maintained; its general Overworld torch-spacing advice is not a wither skeleton spacing rule.

Does this apply to Bedrock Edition?
The specific wither skeleton light threshold for Bedrock Edition is not established by the cited sources, so the Java threshold should not be assumed to apply. Microsoft’s Bedrock entity spawn rules documentation describes configurable brightness filters but does not state the configured range for wither skeletons.

What to do in practice
- Java Edition: Light potential spawn blocks so their resulting light level is at least 12.
- Place torches close enough to illuminate the specific blocks you want to protect; a torch’s light does not cover every block in a fortress.
- Bedrock Edition: Do not rely on the Java threshold as confirmed guidance; the cited documentation does not specify the wither skeleton value.
