Do Free Bethesda Games Stay in Your Library After an Offer Ends? Trials, Giveaways, and Migrations Explained

Sometimes, but not automatically. A Bethesda free-play weekend or trial can stop launching when the event ends, while a clearly labeled free-to-keep giveaway can add a lasting license to your account. A game’s appearance in a library, the ability to install it, and ownership of a permanent license are related but different. The offer’s exact terms, the platform account that claimed it, and the transaction or entitlement record decide what you keep.

Bethesda’s support pages illustrate the distinction: an Elder Scrolls Online free-play event required a full purchase after the event, while Fallout 76’s trial preserved save data for players who later bought the game. Launcher migration rules for games you already owned are a separate issue.

The answer depends on what “free” meant

Stores use “free” for several different arrangements. Before assuming a game is yours permanently, identify which of these appeared on the offer page.

Timed free-play event or free trial

A timed event grants permission to play for a defined period. The store may let you install the full client, show the game in your library, or let you launch it without charging you. Those actions do not by themselves create a permanent license. When the event ends, the account can lose the right to launch the game unless you purchase it or otherwise qualify for access.

Free-to-keep giveaway

A free-to-keep promotion is different: the terms explicitly say that claiming the game adds it to your account to retain. The license normally remains after the promotional window closes, although the platform account, regional eligibility, and any stated restrictions still apply. Do not infer this status merely from a zero price or an “Add to library” button; look for wording such as “keep,” “yours to own,” or an equivalent permanent-entitlement statement.

Subscription or membership access

A subscription can make a game playable without a separate purchase while the subscription remains active. That access is not the same as owning the game. If the membership expires, the game may become unavailable even though the title remains listed in a subscription catalogue or in a previously installed library.

Transfer of a game you already owned

A transfer or migration moves an existing entitlement from one launcher or account system to another. It protects qualifying ownership recorded before the transfer; it does not convert every temporary trial into a permanent license.

Bethesda’s support examples show why the wording matters

The Elder Scrolls Online free-play event

Bethesda Support’s article “How do I join The Elder Scrolls Online Free Play Event?” describes an event that ran August 5–12, 2025. Its direct warning is: “Once the event is over, you will no longer be able to access the game without a full purchase.” That is clear evidence that the event described on that page was temporary.

The dates are important. They identify a past, specific event, not a current promotion calendar and not a rule that automatically governs every future Bethesda giveaway. If you are looking at a different event, read that event’s own terms rather than applying the 2025 dates or assuming the same end time.

The Fallout 76 free-play event

Bethesda’s “How can I participate in the Fallout 76 Free to Play event?” instructions say the event includes the full game during the trial. They also state: “If you decide you want to purchase the full game after the Free Trial Week has ended, all of your save data will carry over.”

That sentence promises continuity of progress after a purchase. It does not say that the trial itself becomes a permanent entitlement. Your character, settings, or other progress can remain associated with the account while the permission to launch the unpurchased game expires. Treat saved data and game ownership as separate records.

Library listing, installation, and ownership are different

A title can appear in a library for several reasons: you bought it, claimed a permanent giveaway, installed a trial, accessed it through a subscription, or received a temporary event entitlement. The visible listing is therefore only a starting point.

Use the platform’s transaction or entitlement history to distinguish those cases. A completed purchase, a permanent promotional claim, and an event access record may be displayed differently. If the listing has disappeared, that does not prove the account never had access; if it remains, that does not prove the license is permanent.

Saved files add another layer. A trial can write progress to the same account that will later hold a purchased copy. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 guidance demonstrates that progress can carry over after buying the full game, but access to the trial client and ownership of the full game remain separate questions.

Do not confuse Bethesda.net launcher migration with a free trial

Bethesda’s launcher migration information concerns games that were already owned on the Bethesda.net Launcher. Bethesda said an eligible title owned there would be available free on Steam and that purchases would carry over. This is an ownership transfer, not a promise that a time-limited free-play event remains playable.

Bethesda also explained that users would retain access to their library records on Bethesda.net after May 11, 2022, even though they could no longer play games through that launcher. Another support answer said that users who missed the migration period could still migrate their library after the launcher became inactive. These statements describe the status of pre-existing library ownership and the transfer process.

Keep four concepts separate:

  • Library record: the account’s listing of titles associated with it.
  • Launcher access: whether a particular application can still start the game.
  • Steam transfer: moving an eligible, previously owned title and its purchase history to Steam.
  • Event access: temporary permission granted under a free-play promotion.

A migration rule can preserve an owned title while a trial rule ends access. One does not override the other.

How to determine whether your claim is permanent

  1. Read the exact offer label and terms. Look for “free weekend,” “free trial,” “play free until,” “subscription,” or “free to keep.” Record the stated end date and time zone if one is shown.
  2. Identify the claiming platform. Note whether you claimed the game through Steam, Bethesda.net, a console store, or another authorized storefront. Entitlements are normally tied to the account used there, not merely to the device on which you installed the game.
  3. Check the account’s transaction or entitlement history. A purchase receipt or a permanent promotional claim is stronger evidence of ownership than an installation entry. An event pass or trial record indicates access with a time limit.
  4. Look for a full-purchase requirement. Wording that says you must buy the game after the event, including Bethesda’s ESO wording, means the event is not itself a permanent license.
  5. Check whether progress is treated separately. Instructions about carrying over saves, such as Bethesda’s Fallout 76 guidance, explain what happens after a later purchase; they do not establish that the trial remains playable.
  6. Save the terms before the promotion closes. Screenshots or a saved copy of the offer page can help if the listing later changes, but they do not replace the platform’s entitlement record.

What to check when a Bethesda game is missing

First determine whether the problem is expired access, a hidden listing, the wrong account, or a migration error. Follow these checks in order.

1. Confirm the account

Sign in to the same platform account that claimed the offer. A different Steam account, Bethesda.net login, or console profile can have a completely different library. Account switching is one of the simplest explanations for a missing title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove library filters

Some library views hide uninstalled games, demonstrations, or other categories. Clear filters and search the complete library. Bethesda’s migration troubleshooting specifically recommends checking filters that can conceal uninstalled titles.

3. Review the transaction record

Find the order, promotional claim, or entitlement entry. If there is no permanent claim and the offer was labeled as a free event, the access may have ended normally. Do not treat the former installation folder as proof of ownership.

4. Check the platform’s missing-game tools

For migration-related cases, Bethesda directs users to confirm the correct Steam account and use Steam Support’s missing-game lookup. These instructions apply to transfer problems, not automatically to every expired trial.

5. Handle free titles that failed to transfer

Bethesda’s migration guidance says that, for free games that failed to appear after an eligible transfer, users should navigate to the Steam store and download the title. That advice is specific to the migration scenario. It should not be used to claim that every free event game is permanently owned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Escalate with useful details

If the entitlement should exist but still cannot be found, contact the relevant platform or Bethesda support channel with the account identifier, platform, offer name, claim date, transaction information, and screenshots of the terms. Support can investigate an account record; it cannot turn a trial whose terms have expired into a purchase.

How the main offer types compare

Offer or access type What you can expect when the period ends Evidence to check
Timed free-play event or trial Access may end unless you buy the full game or have another entitlement. Event end date and language requiring a full purchase; Bethesda’s ESO event is an example.
Free-to-keep promotion The claimed license is intended to remain on the account after the promotional window. Terms explicitly promising permanent ownership or retention, plus the platform’s claim record.
Subscription access Playability normally follows the active subscription rather than permanent ownership. Subscription status and catalogue rules.
Migration of an already-owned Bethesda.net title An eligible pre-existing purchase can transfer to Steam; launcher availability and transfer timing are separate issues. Original Bethesda.net ownership, the linked Steam account, and migration records.

What happens to progress if access ends?

Progress can survive independently of the right to launch the game. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 instructions explicitly say that save data carries over if the player buys the full game after Free Trial Week. That makes it possible to stop playing when the event ends, purchase later, and resume with the same progress, subject to the account and platform conditions in the offer.

Do not assume every title handles saves identically. Before uninstalling, verify where the game stores saves and whether the event and purchased versions use the same account. The safest conclusion from Bethesda’s published example is limited: save continuity can be offered, but it is not evidence of permanent trial ownership.

Questions to answer before claiming any future offer

  • Does the page say “free to keep,” or only “play free until” a date?
  • Which account receives the entitlement?
  • Will the title appear in purchase history, an entitlement list, or only an event page?
  • What exact date and time does access end?
  • Does the page require a full purchase after the event?
  • Are saves retained if you buy later?
  • Is the offer a migration of an existing purchase rather than a new giveaway?

Because the exact promotion in this question is unspecified, no universal Bethesda rule can guarantee permanent access. Bethesda’s documented ESO event shows that trial access can end, its Fallout 76 instructions show that saves may carry over after purchase, and its launcher migration pages show that previously owned titles can transfer separately. The offer terms and the account’s entitlement record are the final authority.
