No published entry requirement says you need multiplayer or a particular main-story quest stage. Gameloft’s October 7, 2026 instructions direct players to the Floating Island through the Plaza portal or the Event tab. However, entering the festival is different from opening every puzzle: some tasks may need Valley items, later content unlocks on set dates, and several Haunted Mansion puzzles require earlier event steps.
What you need to start the festival
The official event notice gives two ways to reach the Haunted Floating Festival: use the portal in the Plaza or select the event through the in-game Event tab. Those are the published access routes; the notice does not add a multiplayer flag, co-op condition, or named story quest as a prerequisite. You can read the instructions in Gameloft’s October 7, 2026 event announcement.

- Open your Valley and travel to the Plaza.
- Look for the portal leading to the Floating Island, or open the Event tab and choose the Haunted Floating Festival activity.
- Enter the island and inspect the available event tasks. The first set of returning challenges and Haunted Mansion content is scheduled to be available from October 7.
The wording matters: the announcement describes how to enter, but it does not promise that every puzzle is visible immediately or that every possible game-state restriction has been tested. Treat portal or menu access as the event-entry test, not as proof that all later rooms and mysteries have unlocked.
Is multiplayer required?
Multiplayer is not listed as an entry requirement. Gameloft’s directions describe one player traveling through the Plaza portal or Event tab and solving activities on the Floating Island. The contemporary walkthrough from Destructoid likewise explains the puzzles as tasks an individual player performs, without identifying a second-player requirement.

That evidence supports a practical answer: start the festival on your own before looking for a co-op partner. There is no published instruction telling you to invite another player, activate a multiplayer mode, or bring a specific companion. It would be too strong, though, to call the event officially single-player-only, because the announcement does not expressly discuss multiplayer settings. The accurate claim is that multiplayer is not named as a condition for entry or puzzle completion in the available instructions.
What this means if you play alone
- You should be able to reach the Floating Island through the stated portal or Event tab without arranging a group.
- The puzzle descriptions use individual actions such as collecting fragments, crafting a key, lighting lanterns, and returning an item to a book.
- If another player cannot join your session, that absence is not identified by the event notice as a reason you cannot begin.
Do you have to finish a story quest first?
The event announcement does not name a required main-story quest, friendship level, or specific chapter of Valley progression. It also does not say that a player must complete a particular character’s quest before entering the island. Therefore, a named story-stage gate is not established by the published instructions.
There is an important distinction between a main-story prerequisite and an event-task prerequisite. The Haunted Mansion sequence has its own order. For example, the walkthrough describes collecting two Haunted Key fragments and crafting a Repaired Haunted Key before the bedroom and its later puzzles can be accessed. That is progression inside the festival, not evidence that a separate campaign quest must be finished first. The community event reference at Dreamlight Valley Wiki also organizes rewards and activities around the event’s own puzzle chain.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBecause the official notice does not explicitly rule out every progression restriction in every account state, avoid interpreting the absence of a named quest as a guarantee that no unrelated unlock, version, or inventory condition could ever affect access. If you can open the event route but a particular room is closed, check the event’s internal clues and release schedule before assuming your story progress is the cause.

Event entry and puzzle access are separate
The following distinction explains most reports that a player can enter but cannot solve everything yet.
| Question | What the published information establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Can I reach the festival? | Use the Plaza portal or the Event tab, according to Gameloft’s notice. | It does not state that every puzzle appears on the first visit. |
| Do I need multiplayer? | No multiplayer requirement is listed; the directions and walkthrough present individual play. | The notice does not provide a formal statement about every multiplayer configuration. |
| Do I need a story quest stage? | No named main-story quest stage is listed for entering the event. | The notice does not guarantee that all possible account-progression edge cases are excluded. |
| Why is a puzzle unavailable? | Some activities need Valley items, scheduled unlocks, or earlier event steps. | Not every unavailable puzzle is explained by a story quest. |
Valley items can still be required
Gameloft specifically warns that some festival puzzles may require items from the Valley. This is an inventory requirement, not a multiplayer requirement. If a clue asks for an object you do not have, return to the Valley and gather the relevant material or item before concluding that the event is locked behind a quest.
The announcement does not provide a single universal shopping list of Valley items for every puzzle. Requirements can differ by activity, and the available walkthroughs describe separate clue chains rather than one shared item check. Keep the distinction clear: being able to enter the island does not mean your current inventory satisfies every puzzle’s recipe or interaction.
Unlock dates: why later puzzles may be missing
The Haunted Floating Festival runs from October 7 through October 31, 2026, with new activities becoming available during the event. The official schedule says the initial returning puzzles and Haunted Mansion puzzles open on October 7, while the final Haunted Mansion mystery, including Ghost Hunt, unlocks on October 18. Gameloft encourages players to return regularly for additional puzzles and rewards; see the dated announcement at the official event page.

| Date | Availability described in the announcement | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| October 7, 2026 | Festival begins; returning challenges and the first Haunted Mansion content unlock. | You can start the event and work on the opening activities. |
| October 18, 2026 | The final Haunted Mansion mystery, including Ghost Hunt, is scheduled to unlock. | Ghost Hunt should not be used as a test of whether you can enter the festival before this date. |
| October 31, 2026 | The festival ends. | Complete available puzzles before the event period closes. |
A locked activity before its scheduled date is a timing issue, not proof that you need a higher story stage or another player. Conversely, reaching October 18 does not remove event-task requirements that must be completed in sequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Internal Haunted Mansion prerequisites
The event’s newer Haunted Mansion content is structured as a chain rather than a collection of unrelated doors. The October 8 walkthrough identifies a Haunted Key sequence in which you find two fragments, craft the repaired key, and use it to open the bedroom. Later tasks include lighting lanterns and returning a Lost Magic Page to the Grimoire. These actions illustrate how a puzzle can remain unavailable even after you have entered the island.
Haunted Key sequence
- Search the available Haunted Mansion area for the two key fragments described by the clue.
- Combine the fragments through the event’s crafting step to make the Repaired Haunted Key.
- Use the repaired key to open the bedroom and continue to the next clues.
The key sequence is an event progression gate. It does not show that a main-story quest or multiplayer session is required.

Haunted Library and Release the Curse
The Haunted Library and Release the Curse activities have their own linked clues and interactions. The separate Release the Curse walkthrough documents one of the later Haunted Key puzzles, while the broader guide maps the event’s nine puzzles and notes that some are not available immediately. Follow the clue order presented in the room instead of repeatedly trying a later object before its preceding step is complete.

Ghost Hunt
Ghost Hunt belongs to the final Haunted Mansion mystery and is scheduled for October 18. If it is absent earlier in the event, the calendar explains that absence. If it remains unavailable after the date, verify that the preceding Mansion clues and any required event items have been completed.
How to diagnose a puzzle that will not start
Use this order so you do not confuse different kinds of requirements.
- Check the calendar. Confirm that the activity’s announced unlock date has arrived. Ghost Hunt, for example, is not scheduled until October 18.
- Confirm the route. Re-enter through the Plaza portal or Event tab rather than assuming a normal Valley doorway leads to the event.
- Read the local clue. Look for language indicating a fragment, key, lantern, book, room, or another earlier interaction.
- Check your inventory. Some puzzles may call for items obtained in the Valley, as Gameloft warns in the event notice.
- Finish the preceding event step. In the Haunted Key chain, the repaired key must be crafted before the bedroom can be opened.
- Separate access from progression. If the island loads but one activity is closed, that pattern points toward timing, items, or event order rather than a multiplayer gate.
If all of those conditions appear satisfied and the activity still does not respond, consult the dated official notice and a current walkthrough for the exact puzzle wording. The available sources establish the event routes, dates, and known dependencies; they do not document a universal technical fix for every account-specific problem.

Gameloft’s announcement is the strongest source for entry routes, event dates, the Valley-item warning, and the October 18 schedule. The Destructoid walkthroughs add practical descriptions of the nine-puzzle structure and Haunted Mansion dependencies. The Dreamlight Valley Wiki provides a community-maintained event reference, and a Reddit guide reflects player discussion rather than an official rule. You can review that discussion at the r/DreamlightValley guide thread.
None of these sources states that every conceivable progression restriction is impossible, and none supplies a formal multiplayer policy for every platform or account type. That is why the safest wording is “not listed as a requirement,” not “guaranteed to work in every game state.” For normal event access, the published instructions point to portal or Event-tab entry and an event-specific puzzle sequence.
