Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Moving between different platform ecosystems normally means buying that platform’s version separately. The PC Java-and-Bedrock bundle is a specific exception, not a universal Minecraft license.
Usually, you do not have to buy Minecraft again when moving to another device on the same platform. Download it from that platform’s store and sign in with the account that originally purchased it.

You will usually need another purchase when moving to a different platform ecosystem—for example, from iPhone to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation to PC, or Android to Xbox. Your Microsoft account can carry your identity, Marketplace access, Minecoins, Realms-related features, and cross-platform play, but it normally does not replace the purchase required by the new platform’s store.
The simplest rule is:
- Same platform plus the same purchasing account: normally no second purchase.
- Different platform store: normally a new purchase.
- PC: the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition bundle is a special case and covers supported PC installations, but it is not a universal license for consoles and mobile devices.
When you can download Minecraft again for free
A digital purchase is generally available again on another device when the new device uses the same platform store and you sign in with the account that owns the purchase. Minecraft’s platform accounts are separate: Microsoft, PlayStation Network, Nintendo, Google Play, and Apple accounts can each be involved depending on the device.

Download Minecraft from the store associated with the new device. On consoles and mobile devices, signing in to the same Microsoft account inside Minecraft is also important for cross-platform services, but that Microsoft login is not necessarily the account that owns the store purchase.
When you normally do have to buy Minecraft again
A purchase made through one platform store generally does not unlock the base game in another platform store. For example:
- An iPhone purchase normally does not unlock Minecraft for Nintendo Switch.
- A PlayStation purchase normally does not unlock the Xbox or PC version.
- An Android purchase normally does not unlock the iPhone and iPad version.
- A Nintendo Switch purchase normally does not unlock the PlayStation or PC version.
- An Xbox console purchase should not automatically be assumed to include the Windows PC version.
This is because the base-game entitlement is tied to the store and platform where it was purchased. Microsoft accounts make cross-platform features possible, but they do not turn every platform into one universal purchase.
The PC exception: Java and Bedrock are bundled
Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC is sold as a combined PC product. A qualifying PC purchase includes:
- Java Edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux through the Minecraft Launcher.
- Bedrock Edition for Windows.
That means a person who owns the current PC bundle generally does not need to buy Java separately for a Mac or Linux computer, or buy Java and Bedrock as two separate PC products. Windows players can access both editions through the appropriate launcher and Microsoft account.

- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
However, the PC bundle is not a universal cross-platform license. It does not normally provide a free PlayStation, Xbox console, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iPhone/iPad copy. The target platform’s store still controls access to its version.

What to do on the new device
- Identify the platform. Decide whether the new device is in the same store ecosystem as the old one. “Another device” is not enough by itself: another Android phone is different from moving from Android to iPhone, and another Xbox is different from moving from Xbox to Windows PC.
- Install Minecraft from the correct store. Use the PlayStation Store, Microsoft/Xbox or Windows store, Nintendo eShop, Google Play, or Apple App Store as appropriate.
- Use the original purchasing account. On a console or phone, this is the platform account that completed the transaction. Inside Minecraft, use the Microsoft account associated with your Minecraft features and multiplayer identity.
- On Windows, check every sign-in. The Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app should use the same Microsoft account. A mismatch can make a legitimate PC license appear unavailable.
- Check your order history before paying again. Search the original purchase confirmation and the relevant Microsoft, PlayStation, Nintendo, Google, or Apple order history. Confirm the edition and platform listed in the receipt.
- Only repurchase after confirming that the target platform is different or the original account cannot access the entitlement. Buying again while signed in to the wrong account can leave you with two purchases and still not fix the sign-in problem.
If Minecraft says “Buy” or only shows a trial
Do not immediately purchase a second copy. Work through these checks:
- Sign out of the store on the new device and sign back in with the account that originally purchased the game.
- On Windows, verify that the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app are not using different Microsoft accounts.
- Check the original receipt. Look for the platform, edition, purchaser, and account used for the transaction.
- Open the platform’s purchase or order history and confirm that the transaction is present.
- Make sure you are installing the correct listing. A PC purchase, console purchase, and mobile purchase can appear as different products.
- Restart the store or launcher after changing accounts, then try the download again.
If the purchase is present in the correct account but the game remains unavailable, use the platform or Minecraft account-recovery/support process rather than buying again. A new Microsoft account cannot normally inherit a purchase made by a different Microsoft account.
Examples by device
Xbox to a new Xbox
Usually no second purchase is required. Install Minecraft on the new Xbox and sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the game. If it is missing, check whether the new console is using a different profile.
Xbox to Windows PC
Do not assume that an Xbox console purchase is the same as a PC purchase. Windows uses the PC product, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, while Xbox has its own console store context. Sign in on the PC with the Microsoft account you use for Minecraft, check the Launcher and Microsoft Store entitlement, and review the order history before deciding whether a PC purchase is needed.

PC to Mac or Linux
For the current PC bundle, generally no second purchase is needed for Java Edition on macOS or Linux. Install the Minecraft Launcher and use the Microsoft account that owns the PC bundle. Bedrock is included for Windows, not as a general Bedrock license for macOS or Linux.
PlayStation to another PlayStation
Usually no second purchase is needed when using the same PlayStation Network account and the appropriate PlayStation store listing. Console-sharing and account-activation rules can affect how purchases are shared with other local users, but changing to another PlayStation console does not ordinarily require buying the game again for the purchasing account.
PlayStation to Nintendo Switch
Generally yes. PlayStation Network and Nintendo use separate platform stores. You can sign in to the same Microsoft account on Switch for cross-platform features, but that sign-in normally does not replace the Nintendo purchase. If you repurchase, make sure the listing is the current Minecraft title for Nintendo Switch rather than an older or discontinued edition.
Android to iPhone or iPad
Generally yes. Android purchases are associated with Google Play, while iPhone and iPad purchases are associated with Apple’s store account. The same Microsoft account can still be used inside Minecraft on both devices, but the mobile base-game purchase normally follows the platform store.

Usually no second purchase is required when the new console uses the Nintendo account that purchased the game. The Microsoft account linked inside Minecraft is useful for cross-platform services, but it is not a replacement for the Nintendo account that owns the Switch copy.

What follows you across devices—and what does not
It helps to separate three different things: the base-game license, your Microsoft account data, and local world files.
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Base game | Normally follows the original platform-store purchase, not every platform you use. |
| Microsoft account | Provides your Minecraft identity and can enable cross-platform play, social features, parental controls, Marketplace access, and related services on supported platforms. |
| Marketplace purchases | Generally associated with the same Microsoft account and available on supported devices, subject to platform and account rules. |
| Minecoins | Can be available across supported devices when you use the same Microsoft account, but platform rules and account restrictions apply. |
| Realms and subscriptions | Can be used through the same Microsoft account where supported; availability and multiplayer requirements still vary by platform. |
| Locally saved worlds | Do not automatically move just because you installed the game and signed in. |
| Achievements and settings | Should not be assumed to transfer identically across editions, platforms, or local installations. |
Marketplace content and the base game are separate. You may see the same skins, Minecoins, or other account-linked content after signing in on a new device while still needing to purchase that platform’s copy of Minecraft.

How to move your worlds
A license only gives you access to the game; it does not automatically copy locally stored worlds. Back up or transfer worlds separately before replacing or wiping the old device.
- Java Edition: back up the world folder on the old computer and copy it into the new computer’s Java
savesfolder. Keep a separate backup in case the new installation uses a different game version. - Bedrock Edition: use the transfer method supported by the devices involved, such as cloud or physical storage where available, or Minecraft Realms. The exact process differs between Windows, consoles, and mobile platforms.
- Before deleting the old installation: open the world on the old device, confirm the backup exists, and avoid assuming that signing in with Microsoft automatically uploads local worlds.
Do not confuse a Microsoft login with a purchase receipt
The Microsoft account is central to modern Minecraft multiplayer and account features, but it is not always the store account that paid for the game. On Nintendo Switch, for example, Nintendo controls the purchase while Microsoft handles the linked Minecraft account. On Android and Apple devices, Google or Apple controls the mobile purchase.
That distinction explains many “I already own Minecraft” errors. The player may be using the correct Microsoft account for multiplayer but the wrong platform account for the purchase—or may own Minecraft on a different platform entirely.
Best Value
If you do need to repurchase
First match the product to the target device. A Nintendo Switch copy is not a PC copy, and the PC Java-and-Bedrock bundle is not a console license. Check the platform, edition, account, and current product name before completing the transaction. For Nintendo Switch in particular, confirm that the listing is the current Minecraft release rather than a legacy Wii U or older Switch Edition product.
For Windows, check whether your existing account already owns Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC before paying. For a console or mobile device, use the store account belonging to that platform and then link the Microsoft account you want to use inside Minecraft.
Frequently Asked Questions
I bought Minecraft on Xbox. Do I need to buy it again on another Xbox?
Usually no. Install Minecraft on the new Xbox and sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the purchase. Check the profile and order history if the game is missing.
I bought Minecraft on PlayStation. Do I need it again on Nintendo Switch?
Usually yes. PlayStation and Nintendo use separate stores. Your Microsoft account can provide cross-platform features on Switch, but it normally does not replace the Nintendo purchase.
I bought Minecraft on PC. Do I need to buy it again on Mac or Linux?
Generally no for Java Edition if you own the current Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle. That purchase covers Java on Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus Bedrock on Windows.
Recommended Free Tools
I bought Minecraft on Android. Do I need it again on iPhone?
Generally yes. Android purchases use Google Play, while iPhone and iPad purchases use Apple’s store account. The Microsoft account can remain the same, but the base-game license usually does not transfer between those stores.
What if Minecraft says I need to buy it again?
Not necessarily. Check the original purchase receipt and the platform account’s order history first. A different Microsoft account can make a valid license appear unavailable, but a purchase generally cannot be transferred to a new Microsoft account.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You normally do not buy Minecraft again for another device on the same platform when you use the original purchasing account. A move to a different platform store usually requires a separate base-game purchase. The PC Java-and-Bedrock bundle is the main exception, and it still does not unlock console or mobile versions.
