The entitlement works the other way, too: PC owners of Java should receive Bedrock. Before buying anything, sign in to the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account used for the original purchase and check whether both editions show as owned.
This applies to the PC editions. A Bedrock purchase on a console or phone does not, by itself, establish that you own the PC bundle.
What the free entitlement covers
Minecraft’s PC bundle gives owners of either PC edition access to the other. Minecraft announced the bundle for June 7, 2022, and its current support guidance says PC bundle owners and players who migrated a Mojang account to Microsoft should have access to both PC editions. Minecraft’s 2022 announcement described the second edition as free; Minecraft Help explains how to check which PC editions you own.
The important distinction is the license’s platform scope. Java is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock is available on PC as well as consoles and mobile devices, but the PC bundle entitlement should not be assumed to transfer from a console or mobile purchase. How to check whether your account owns both PC editions
- Open the Minecraft Launcher on your PC.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Minecraft, or the account associated with your migrated purchase.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition, then Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, checking each one in turn.
- If the edition shows Play or Install, the account has access to it. If it shows Buy Now, that signed-in account does not show ownership of that edition.
- If the Launcher status is unclear, open the Minecraft PC bundle listing in the Microsoft Store while signed in to the same account.
If an edition appears unavailable, check whether the original purchase is tied to a different Microsoft account before paying again. Minecraft Help identifies signing into the wrong account as one reason an edition may appear missing. The official PC bundle listing also says to install the Launcher and sign in with the account used to purchase the game to find it in the library: Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC Standard Edition.
What if I own Bedrock on a console or phone?
The free second-edition entitlement described by Minecraft is for the PC editions. The available official guidance does not establish that every console or mobile Bedrock purchase grants a PC license. Check ownership in the platform store where you bought Bedrock, then check the Microsoft account used on PC in the Launcher or Microsoft Store. Do not buy the PC version solely on the assumption that the console or mobile license transfers—or that it must.

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Java and Bedrock are separate editions with separate multiplayer groups. Java players can play with other Java players on Windows, Mac, and Linux; Bedrock players can cross-play on supported Bedrock platforms. If you own both PC editions, launch the same edition your friends are using. Minecraft outlines the distinction in its Java and Bedrock comparison.
Does a new PC mean I have to buy Minecraft again?
Not normally. Install the Minecraft Launcher on the replacement PC and sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased the game. The purchased edition should appear in your library. If it does not, verify the account first; an account mismatch can make an existing purchase look unavailable. Minecraft’s PC bundle page describes installing the Launcher and using the purchasing account to access the game.

What if my old Mojang account is involved?
Minecraft says the Mojang-to-Microsoft account migration period officially ended on December 18, 2023. If you did not migrate before the deadline, do not assume an old Mojang login still grants access to the PC editions; use Minecraft’s current account and support guidance to check your options.
