The key distinction is whether the container is safe and whether its location resets. Loose items dropped into the world are a separate case, and their persistence is not guaranteed everywhere.
When can items disappear?
A container is an interactive object with an inventory screen for taking or depositing items. A Fallout: New Vegas storage reference distinguishes safe containers, which it says retain deposited items indefinitely, from unsafe containers, which can lose those items when their contents respawn.

The reference lists several unsafe examples: the refrigerator in the Goodsprings General Store; refrigerators in Deputy Beagle’s and Nash’s residences in Primm; one refrigerator in Vault 22; two refrigerators in the Followers safehouse; and two refrigerators in the NCR Correctional Facility. These examples show that a familiar-looking container is not necessarily safe, but they are not a complete directory of safe or unsafe storage.
Do dropped items disappear too?
Dropping an item loose in the world is different from depositing it in a container. A 2011 player-forum answer says dropped items may remain when the location itself does not reset, but that is anecdotal—not a guarantee for every location, edition, or mod. The GECK reference on Encounter Zones explains that references respawn according to Encounter Zone settings when a cell resets, and that attached scripts may run their OnReset blocks. That describes how resets can affect game objects; it does not establish that every placed item is deleted in every cell.

The official game manual explains how to drop items and transfer them between inventory and containers, but does not promise that either kind of storage persists indefinitely.
How should you store valuable gear?
- Use a container you have verified as safe for items you cannot afford to lose. The available reference does not provide a complete safe-container list.
- Do not assume a refrigerator or other ordinary-looking container is safe; several refrigerators are specifically listed as unsafe.
- Treat loose dropped items as uncertain if you do not know whether the location resets.
- For especially valuable items, avoid relying on an unverified container or location.
What to try if something is missing
Bethesda Support’s guidance for placed items that appear to vanish from a home is general advice and does not name Fallout: New Vegas specifically. It suggests checking storage, refreshing the area by leaving and returning, restarting the game or system, loading an earlier save, and removing mods if applicable. These steps may help investigate a missing item, but they cannot guarantee its recovery.
