No. Switching your active Buddy does not erase that Pokémon’s Buddy Level or remove it from your Buddy History. What changes are the Pokémon you have active and any effects tied to that active Buddy; daily Affection hearts and Mood are separate systems.
What stays when you switch Buddies?
Buddy Level progress
Your Buddy Level does not go down when you switch to another Pokémon. Niantic says, “Buddy Levels don’t decrease over time,” so the level you earned remains if you later choose that Pokémon as your Buddy again. See Niantic’s Buddy Adventure guidance.

Buddy History
Pokémon you have previously set as Buddies remain accessible through Buddy History. You can select a former Buddy from that page and make it active again. Niantic explains this in its Trainer Profile guidance.
What can change?
Daily Affection hearts
Affection hearts are daily rewards, not the same thing as your accumulated Buddy Level. Niantic sets an overall daily limit and limits for individual heart-earning activities; the daily counter resets at midnight local time. Switching Buddies does not mean your established Buddy Level has been wiped. For the heart limits, see Niantic’s Buddy Adventure help.

Mood
Mood is temporary and can decrease over time. An Excited Buddy can provide additional possible hearts for the day and reduce the walking distance needed to find a Candy. Niantic says that if a Buddy stops being Excited, you do not lose extra Affection hearts already earned that day. That statement concerns Mood changing; Niantic does not explicitly guarantee that every temporary effect or Mood value behaves identically at the moment you switch Buddies.
Best Buddy CP Boost
A Best Buddy’s CP Boost applies only while that Pokémon is currently your active Buddy. It is inactive while you have a different Pokémon selected, and applies again when you set that Best Buddy as your active Buddy.

How to switch Buddies
- Open your current Buddy’s Buddy Profile and tap Swap Buddies, or open Buddy History and tap Swap Buddies beside the Pokémon you want.
- Choose the Pokémon to make your active Buddy.
Niantic’s English Pokémon GO Help Center guidance lists a limit of 20 Buddy swaps per day. The limit and menu labels may change with game updates.
